Thickness dependence of spin-orbit torques generated by WTe2
We study current-induced torques in WTe2/permalloy bilayers as a function of
WTe2 thickness. We measure the torques using both second-harmonic Hall and
spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance measurements for samples with WTe2
thicknesses that span from 16 nm down to a single monolayer. We confirm the
existence of an out-of-plane antidamping torque, and show directly that the
sign of this torque component is reversed across a monolayer step in the WTe2.
The magnitude of the out-of-plane antidamping torque depends only weakly on
WTe2 thickness, such that even a single-monolayer WTe2 device provides a strong
torque that is comparable to much thicker samples. In contrast, the
out-of-plane field-like torque has a significant dependence on the WTe2
thickness. We demonstrate that this field-like component originates
predominantly from the Oersted field, thereby correcting a previous inference
drawn by our group based on a more limited set of samples.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure
Comparing Simulations and Observations of the Lyman-Alpha Forest I. Methodology
We describe techniques for comparing spectra extracted from cosmological
simulations and observational data, using the same methodology to link
Lyman-alpha properties derived from the simulations with properties derived
from observational data. The eventual goal is to measure the coherence or
clustering properties of Lyman-alpha absorbers using observations of quasar
pairs and groups. We quantify the systematic underestimate in opacity that is
inherent in the continuum fitting process of observed spectra over a range of
resolution and signal-to-noise ratio. We present an automated process for
detecting and selecting absorption features over the range of resolution and
signal-to-noise of typical observational data on the Lyman-alpha "forest".
Using these techniques, we detect coherence over transverse scales out to 500
h^{-1}_{50} kpc in spectra extracted from a cosmological simulation at z = 2.Comment: 52 pages, includes 14 figures, to appear in ApJ v566 Feb 200
Parametrising Star Formation Histories
We examine the star formation histories (SFHs) of galaxies in smoothed
particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations, compare them to parametric models
that are commonly used in fitting observed galaxy spectral energy
distributions, and examine the efficacy of these parametric models as practical
tools for recovering the physical parameters of galaxies. The commonly used
tau-model, with SFR ~ exp(-t/tau), provides a poor match to the SFH of our SPH
galaxies, with a mismatch between early and late star formation that leads to
systematic errors in predicting colours and stellar mass-to-light ratios. A
one-parameter lin-exp model, with SFR ~ t*exp(-t/tau), is much more successful
on average, but it fails to match the late-time behavior of the bluest, most
actively star-forming galaxies and the passive, "red and dead" galaxies. We
introduce a 4-parameter model, which transitions from lin-exp to a linear ramp
after a transition time, which describes our simulated galaxies very well. We
test the ability of these parametrised models to recover (at z=0, 0.5, and 1)
the stellar mass-to-light ratios, specific star formation rates, and stellar
population ages from the galaxy colours, computed from the full SPH star
formation histories using the FSPS code of Conroy et al. (2009). Fits with
tau-models systematically overestimate M/L by ~ 0.2 dex, overestimate
population ages by ~ 1-2 Gyr, and underestimate sSFR by ~ 0.05 dex. Fits with
lin-exp are less biased on average, but the 4-parameter model yields the best
results for the full range of galaxies. Marginalizing over the free parameters
of the 4-parameter model leads to slightly larger statistical errors than
1-parameter fits but essentially removes all systematic biases, so this is our
recommended procedure for fitting real galaxies.Comment: 28 pages, 18 figure
Urinary diversion and bladder reconstruction/replacement using intestinal segments for intractable incontinence or following cystectomy
Background Surgery performed to improve or replace the function of the diseased urinary bladder has been carried out for over a century. Main reasons for improving or replacing the function of the urinary bladder are bladder cancer, neurogenic bladder dysfunction, detrusor overactivity and chronic inflammatory diseases of the bladder (such as interstitial cystitis, tuberculosis and schistosomiasis). There is still much uncertainty about the best surgical approach. Options available at the present time include: (1) conduit diversion (the creation of various intestinal conduits to the skin) or continent diversion (which includes either a rectal reservoir or continent cutaneous diversion), (2) bladder reconstruction and (3) replacement of the bladder with various intestinal segments. Objectives To determine the best way of improving or replacing the function of the lower urinary tract using intestinal segments when the bladder has to be removed or when it has been rendered useless or dangerous by disease. Search methods We searched the Cochrane Incontinence Group Specialised Trials Register (searched 28 October 2011), which contains trials identified from the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), MEDLINE and CINAHL, and handsearching of journals and conference proceedings, and the reference lists of relevant articles. Selection criteria All randomised or quasi-randomised controlled trials of surgery involving transposition of an intestinal segment into the urinary tract. Data collection and analysis Trials were evaluated for appropriateness for inclusion and for risk of bias by the review authors. Three review authors were involved in the data extraction. Data were combined in a meta-analysis when appropriate. Main results Five trials met the inclusion criteria with a total of 355 participants. These trials addressed only five of the 14 comparisons pre-specified in the protocol. One trial reported no statistically significant differences in the incidence of upper urinary tract infection, uretero-intestinal stenosis and renal deterioration in the comparison of continent diversion with conduit diversion. The confidence intervals were all wide, however, and did not rule out important clinical differences. In a second trial, there was no reported difference in the incidence of upper urinary tract infection and uretero-intestinal stenosis when conduit diversions were fashioned from either ileum or colon. A meta-analysis of two trials showed no statistically significant difference in daytime or nocturnal incontinence amongst participants who were randomised to ileocolonic/ileocaecal segment bladder replacement compared to an ileal bladder replacement. However, one small trial suggested that bladder replacement using an ileal segment compared to using an ileocolonic segment may be better in terms of lower rates of nocturnal incontinence. There were no differences in the incidence of dilatation of upper tract, daytime urinary incontinence or wound infection using different intestinal segments for bladder replacement. However the data were reported for 'renal units', but not in a form that allowed appropriate patient-based paired analyses. No statistically significant difference was found in the incidence of renal scarring between anti-refluxing versus freely refluxing uretero-intestinal anastomotic techniques in conduit diversions and bladder replacement groups. Again, the outcome data were not reported as paired analysis or in form to carry out paired analysis. Authors' conclusions The evidence from the included trials was very limited. Only five studies met the inclusion criteria; these were small, of moderate or poor methodological quality, and reported few of the pre-selected outcome measures. This review did not find any evidence that bladder replacement (orthotopic or continent diversion) was better than conduit diversion following cystectomy for cancer. There was no evidence to suggest that bladder reconstruction was better than conduit diversion for benign disease. The clinical significance of data from one small trial suggesting that bladder replacement using an ileal segment compared to using an ileocolonic segment is better in terms of lower rates of nocturnal incontinence is uncertain. The small amount of usable evidence for this review suggests that collaborative multi centre studies should be organised, using random allocation where possible. Dendritic and axonal targeting patterns of a genetically-specified class of retinal ganglion cells that participate in image-forming circuits.
BackgroundThere are numerous functional types of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), each participating in circuits that encode a specific aspect of the visual scene. This functional specificity is derived from distinct RGC morphologies and selective synapse formation with other retinal cell types; yet, how these properties are established during development remains unclear. Islet2 (Isl2) is a LIM-homeodomain transcription factor expressed in the developing retina, including approximately 40% of all RGCs, and has previously been implicated in the subtype specification of spinal motor neurons. Based on this, we hypothesized that Isl2+ RGCs represent a related subset that share a common function.ResultsWe morphologically and molecularly characterized Isl2+ RGCs using a transgenic mouse line that expresses GFP in the cell bodies, dendrites and axons of Isl2+ cells (Isl2-GFP). Isl2-GFP RGCs have distinct morphologies and dendritic stratification patterns within the inner plexiform layer and project to selective visual nuclei. Targeted filling of individual cells reveals that the majority of Isl2-GFP RGCs have dendrites that are monostratified in layer S3 of the IPL, suggesting they are not ON-OFF direction-selective ganglion cells. Molecular analysis shows that most alpha-RGCs, indicated by expression of SMI-32, are also Isl2-GFP RGCs. Isl2-GFP RGCs project to most retino-recipient nuclei during early development, but specifically innervate the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus and superior colliculus (SC) at eye opening. Finally, we show that the segregation of Isl2+ and Isl2- RGC axons in the SC leads to the segregation of functional RGC types.ConclusionsTaken together, these data suggest that Isl2+ RGCs comprise a distinct class and support a role for Isl2 as an important component of a transcription factor code specifying functional visual circuits. Furthermore, this study describes a novel genetically-labeled mouse line that will be a valuable resource in future investigations of the molecular mechanisms of visual circuit formation
The Observability of Metal Lines Associated with the Lyman-alpha Forest
We develop a prescription for characterizing the strengths of metal lines
associated with Lyman-alpha forest absorbers (LYFAs) of a given neutral
hydrogen column density N_HI and metallicity [Fe/H]. This Line Observability
Index (LOX) is line-specific and translates, for weak lines, into a measure of
the equivalent width. It can be evaluated quickly for thousands of transitions
within the framework of a given model of the Lyman-alpha forest, providing a
ranking of the lines in terms of their strengths and enabling model builders to
select the lines that should be detectable in observed spectra of a given
resolution and signal-to-noise ratio. We compute the LOX for a large number of
elements and transitions in two cosmological models of the Lyman-alpha forest
at z=3 derived from a hydrodynamic simulation of structure formation, and we
discuss how the LOX depends on redshift and on model parameters such as the
mean baryonic density and radiation field. We find that the OVI (1032,1038)
doublet is the best probe of the metallicity in low column density LYFAs N_{HI}
\approx 10^{14.5} cm^{-2}). Metallicities down to [O/H] \sim -3 ([Fe/H] \sim
-3.5 with the assumed [O/Fe] ratio) yield OVI absorption features that should
be detectable in current high-quality spectra, provided that the expected
position of the OVI feature is not contaminated by HI absorption. The strongest
transitions in lower ionisation states of oxygen are OV(630), OIV(788), and
OIII(833), and are likely to be detected with next generation UV instruments.
Of the lines with rest wavelengths \lambda_r > 1216, which can potentially be
observed redwards of the \lya forest, the CIV(1548,1551) doublet is expected to

Sulfurous Gases As Biological Messengers and Toxins: Comparative Genetics of Their Metabolism in Model Organisms
Gasotransmitters are biologically produced gaseous signalling molecules. As gases with potent biological activities, they are toxic as air pollutants, and the sulfurous compounds are used as fumigants. Most investigations focus on medical aspects of gasotransmitter biology rather than toxicity toward invertebrate pests of agriculture. In fact, the pathways for the metabolism of sulfur containing gases in lower organisms have not yet been described. To address this deficit, we use protein sequences from Homo sapiens to query Genbank for homologous proteins in Caenorhabditis elegans, Drosophila melanogaster, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In C. elegans, we find genes for all mammalian pathways for synthesis and catabolism of the three sulfur containing gasotransmitters, H2S, SO2 and COS. The genes for H2S synthesis have actually increased in number in C. elegans. Interestingly, D. melanogaster and Arthropoda in general, lack a gene for 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase, an enzym for H2S synthesis under reducing conditions
A Budget and Accounting of Metals at z~0: Results from the COS-Halos Survey
We present a budget and accounting of metals in and around star-forming
galaxies at . We combine empirically derived star formation histories
with updated supernova and AGB yields and rates to estimate the total mass of
metals produced by galaxies with present-day stellar mass of
--. On the accounting side of the ledger, we
show that a surprisingly constant 20--25% mass fraction of produced metals
remain in galaxies' stars, interstellar gas and interstellar dust, with little
dependence of this fraction on the galaxy stellar mass (omitting those metals
immediately locked up in remnants). Thus, the bulk of metals are outside of
galaxies, produced in the progenitors of today's galaxies. The COS-Halos
survey is uniquely able to measure the mass of metals in the circumgalactic
medium (to impact parameters of kpc) of low-redshift
galaxies. Using these data, we map the distribution of CGM metals as traced by
both the highly ionized OVI ion and a suite of low-ionization species; combined
with constraints on circumgalactic dust and hotter X-ray emitting gas out to
similar impact parameters, we show that % of metals produced by
galaxies can be easily accounted for out to
150 kpc. With the current data, we cannot rule out a constant mass of metals
within this fixed physical radius. This census provides a crucial boundary
