Whether he is writing an erotic lyric, a mutual love poem or a holy sonnet, John Donne\u27s poems employ a similar argumentative structure. Although The Flea , an erotic lyric, The Canonization , a mutual love poem, and Batter My Heart , a holy sonnet portray different types of love, Donne\u27s argumentative structure in these poems is similar to each other. In The Flea , The Canonization and Batter My Heart , Donne\u27s speakers present a claim or command which they defend throughout the rest of the poem. The speakers use persuasive strategies to defend and validate their assertion. As the poems conclude, the speakers remain confident that their propositions will triumph

Purpose: In patients with advanced oesophageal carcinoma palliation of dysphagia is important to maintaining a reasonable quality of life. The primary aim of this study was to determine the dysphagia progression-free survival (DPFS) in patients with advanced oesophageal carcinoma treated with palliative radiotherapy (RT). Methods: The medical records of all patients with oesophageal carcinoma presenting to Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town between January 2015-December 2016 were reviewed and patients who were not candidates for curative treatment and received palliative RT were selected. For these patients, the dysphagia score (DS) was recorded prior to RT, 6 weeks after RT and at each follow-up visit. The DPFS was calculated as the time from completion of RT to worsening in DS by ≥1 point or until death. Other outcomes measured were objective change in DS and survival post RT. Results: The study population comprised 84 patients. Squamous cell cancer was the primary histological subtype (93%). The median duration of DPFS after RT was 73 days, with approximately two-thirds of patients remaining able to swallow at least liquids and soft diet until death. The difference in median duration of DPFS was not statistically significant in stented versus non-stented patients (54 days vs 83 days; p =0.224). The mean change in DS was 0.45 ± 0.89 points following RT and the post RT survival was significantly shorter in patients with stent insertion (81 days vs 123 days; p=0.042). Conclusion: Palliative RT can be used successfully to prolong DPFS in patients with locally advanced and metastatic squamous cell cancer of the oesophagus

A technical analysis of the difference in treatment of technical fees in relation to the receipt of management fees by a resident of South Africa, sourced from Botswana and Zambia, including the impact of domestic and treaty relief

With international developments there has over the past few years been an increase in the provision of cross border services. By nature, services are often intangible and can in most cases be provided remotely. As such, an individual or enterprise providing personal services can substantially be involved in another state’s economy without establishing a permanent establishment or fixed base. This phenomenon proved problematic, especially in developing countries who are large importers of services, in that the country paying for the services would not be in a position to tax these activities however would, in terms of application of their domestic laws, be required to provide a deduction in relation to the payment for services where it relates to legitimate costs incurred in the production of income. In light of this, and in an attempt to protect their tax base, it is found that majority of developing countries would incorporate in domestic law a tax on technical services paid to nonresidents. This is usually in the form of a withholding tax. This practice was undesirable for both taxpayers and tax authorities in that it resulted in unrelieved double taxation or double non-taxation which in turn causes difficult disputes whilst consuming scarce resources. In light of this, a new Article 12A- Fees on technical services had been drafted into the 2017 United Nation Double Taxation Convention between Developed and Developing Countries (the “UN Model”). This article provides a Source State to tax certain technical services defined as “any payment in consideration for any service of a managerial, technical or consultancy nature, at a rate agreed between the two States, on a gross basis”. By performing qualitative research, based on a simplistic scenario for management fees, it is found that the inclusion in a treaty of an article similar to Article 12A makes the application of treaty relief easier and neutralises the tax effect for a South African resident. However, where no distributive rules to technical services (in particular management fees) apply in a treaty it may become burdensome to prove that treaty relief should apply in a case where double taxation occurs. Based on the results of the research (due to the economic impact it may have on South Africa), it is recommended that South African treaties with other developing countries which levy a withholding tax on management fees, should be updated by protocol or renegotiation of the treaty to include a similar article to the new Article 12A in the UN Model

The Effects of Globalization on Women in Developing Nations

Within the past two decades, globalization has created a tremendous impact on the lives of women in developing nations. Globalization can be defined as “a complex economic, political, cultural, and geographic process in which the mobility of capital, organizations, ideas, discourses, and peoples has taken a global or transnational form (Moghadam 1999). With the establishment of international free trade policies, such as North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and GATT, transnational corporations are using the profit motive to guide their factories toward developing nations in search of “cheap” female labor. Corporations prefer female labor over male labor because women are considered to be “docile” workers, who are willing to obey production demands at any price. In developing nations, certain types of work, such as garment assembly, is considered to be an extension of female household roles. Therefore, cultural influences in developing nations also impacts employment stratification. Bringing a high demand of employment opportunities for women in developing nations creates an instantaneous change within the social structure of these societies. Although the demand for female employment brings about an array of opportunities and a sense of independence, the glass ceiling continues to exist with the “feminization of poverty” (Moghadam 1999). Researchers in the fields of Sociology, Anthropology, and Economics have collected empirical data that shows the consequences of globalization on the lives of women and their families in developing nations. Given these circumstances and the empirical evidence collected in the various studies, does globalization have an overall positive or negative impact on the live of women in developing nations

Revenues play important roles for economic development in any country in this world. It can be described informs of taxes and duties gained. Royal Malaysian Customs (RMC) is a government body that has been appointed to collect the indirect taxes and duties such sales and services tax, import and export duties. The 2011 targeted revenues are amounted to RM 32 billion. On the way of grabbing the victory, the manpower is considered to be the ultimate source to achieve mission and vision of the RMC. The purpose of this study is to identify the factors that affect job satisfaction among customs personnel in RMC Selangor. In measuring the job satisfaction and getting into the result required 157 of RMC Selangor respondents to freely answer the questionnaire. In relation, five (5) variables is perceived to be important is being measured; job satisfaction (3.2734), human resource practice-salary (3.1699) and promotion (2.8362), working environment (3.2840), job stress (3.5318) and personnel values (3.4423). Methodologically, the objectives of this study were gained via the analysis on mean, standard deviation. The analysis on the level of variable found that all variable is moderate in status. While the result form the Pearson Correlation Coefficient shown that, human resource practice-salary and promotion, working environment, job stress and personnel values had positive relationship to the job satisfaction. Indeed linear regression portrayed that there were three most significant relationships towards the job satisfaction among RMC Selangor manpower which is personnel values (β = 0.365, p = 0.000), human resource practice-promotion (β = 0.301, p = 0.000) and job stress (β = 0.120, p = 0.038). In this research, it had proved that human resources practice, working environment, job stress and individual/personal values dimensions have influence on job satisfaction. This was explained via the r square which represents 0.677 or 67.70% as the contributor factor towards job satisfaction. The finding had suggested that RMC Selangor has to beware on these three factors as it represents either future opportunity or threats if failed to be handled carefully

The objective of this project is to mimic the human motions and use back that information to convert it into robotic motion. The motion selected in this project is drawing activities on top a paper. A robotic arm system was build that can perform image processing from images obtained from a webcam, and use that information to convert it into robotic motion. The human will perform the simple drawings and the image will be captured by the webcam. Using MATLAB interface with its supported hardware, the image will be processed in real time to get the appropriate pulse width modulation (PWM) signals to be fed to the servo motors that acts as a joint for the robotic arm. Various image processing were tested and the object tracking based on colour was used in this project. The robotic arm system was managed to perform linear drawing, but are having difficulties to perform curved drawings perfectly. It was also programmed to detect the differences of when the user makes a drawing or not. Regardless, the important features of the drawing was successfully copied using images from the webca

According to Needs and Abilities, Universal Basic Income Requires Universal Basic Infrastructure

    Get PDF
This paper considers Universal Basic Income (UBI) as a method for establishing a good society that fulfils the needs of all its members without coercion. It starts with a brief description of UBI and of the good society it aims to create. Various models of basic human needs are considered. Next, we consider non-human and human resources available to create a good society and how they are or might be distributed. This leads to consideration of the types of infrastructure that might be available and how they impact on the level of UBI. An example of how health infrastructure contributes to life expectancy and excess deaths during the covid19 pandemic is included. Some current examples of UBI are discussed together with an evaluation of their efficacy. Measurement is clearly key to evaluation and available and desirable measures are described with special attention to the “Our World in Data” web site. The pros and cons of UBI are discussed. Finally, we conclude that UBI is a useful radical starting point, but that serious progress requires consideration of generations of resources and of allocation of those resources between universal infrastructure and universal individual basic income.Peer reviewe
