    Short proofs of the Quantum Substate Theorem

    The Quantum Substate Theorem due to Jain, Radhakrishnan, and Sen (2002) gives us a powerful operational interpretation of relative entropy, in fact, of the observational divergence of two quantum states, a quantity that is related to their relative entropy. Informally, the theorem states that if the observational divergence between two quantum states rho, sigma is small, then there is a quantum state rho' close to rho in trace distance, such that rho' when scaled down by a small factor becomes a substate of sigma. We present new proofs of this theorem. The resulting statement is optimal up to a constant factor in its dependence on observational divergence. In addition, the proofs are both conceptually simpler and significantly shorter than the earlier proof.Comment: 11 pages.     3D model analysis of human foot

    In recent years, skeletal models of the human body are used to review biological structures and performances. The analysis of foot is of considerable interest, as it has physical interaction between the body and the surroundings throughout locomotion. Analysis will be vital for understanding the impact of mechanics during human standing and motion. It is difficult to directly measure the stresses on the foot. However, by using FEA, a 3D model of the foot is created from CT scan images and analyzed for stress and deformation using ANSYS. The distribution of stress within the foot model of human not only depends on the geometry but also on the structure and application of load on the foot. Using MIPAV software, a combined image was generated from CT scan segmented images.3-D model of the human foot was developed using ITK SNAP software. The complete 3D model of foot was generated and imported into ANSYS and meshed. Static structural analysis (load & deformation) was carried out in ANSYS at different loading conditions. The deformation and stresses of the human foot were evaluated at various static loading conditions. The results were used to study the biomechanics/design of human foot during gait cycle

Neuroinflammation is a typical feature of most neurodegenerative diseases that leads to an array of pathological changes within the affected areas in the brain. The neurodegeneration in HD is also caused by aberrant immune response in the presence of aggregated mutant huntingtin protein. The effects of immune activation in HD nervous system are a relatively unexplored area of research. This paper summarises immunological features associated with development and progression of HD.U.     Properdin and factor H: Opposing players on the alternative complement pathway "see-saw"

    This article has been made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund.Properdin and factor H are two key regulatory proteins having opposite functions in the alternative complement pathway. Properdin up-regulates the alternative pathway by stabilizing the C3bBb complex, whereas factor H downregulates the pathway by promoting proteolytic degradation of C3b. While factor H is mainly produced in the liver, there are several extrahepatic sources. In addition to the liver, factor H is also synthesized in fetal tubuli, keratinocytes, skin fibroblasts, ocular tissue, adipose tissue, brain, lungs, heart, spleen, pancreas, kidney, muscle, and placenta. Neutrophils are the major source of properdin, and it is also produced by monocytes, T cells and bone marrow progenitor cell line. Properdin is released by neutrophils from intracellular stores following stimulation by N-formyl-methionine-leucine-phenylalanine (fMLP) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-Ī±). The HEP G2 cells derived from human liver has been found to produce functional properdin. Endothelial cells also produce properdin when induced by shear stress, thus is a physiological source for plasma properdin. The diverse range of extrahepatic sites for synthesis of these two complement regulators suggests the importance and need for local availability of the proteins. Here, we discuss the significance of the local synthesis of properdin and factor H. This assumes greater importance in view of recently identified unexpected and novel roles of properdin and factor H that are potentially independent of their involvement in complement regulation

    Flotation of Low Grade Copper ore from Kallur, Raichur District, Karnataka

    Copper, an important non-ferrous metal, is in great demand in India, resulting in a continuous important of large quantities. The total copper ore reserves in India(Raghunandan et. al.1981) have been estimated to be 497 million tons of which an average of 2 million tons are being processed at present. In this c ontext the deve-lopment and exploitation of new reserves assumes impor-tance in order to meet the increasing demand from inter-nal production rather than through imports of the metal. Out of 19.4 million tons of reserves of the ore in Kar-nataka, 4.5 million tons are at present commercially exploited at Ingaldhal and Kalyadi. New ore reserves have been found at Tintini, Kailur, Machanur and Aladahalli and exploratory drilling for copper in these areas have been started by the Department of Mines and Geology. In this paper a detailed account of the beneficiation studies carried out on the low grade copper ore from Kallur, Raichur District, Karnataka are described for possible commercial exploitation in future

    The manifestations of human monocytic ehrlichiosis range from a mild febrile syndrome to a severe multisystem illness. Myocardial involvement is uncommon. We report a woman, 78 years of age, who was treated with trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole after a tick bite, in whom myocarditis was subsequently diagnosed. She recovered completely after doxycycline therapy

    Selective Flotation of Scheelite and Calcite

    The gold tailings from Gold Fields containing low scheelite values has a compled mineralogy with hornblende, quartz, arsenopyrite and calcite as major gangue minerals. The most difficult problem in scheelite flotation is not the removal of the siliceous or sulphide gangue, but the separation of Scheelite and calcite minerals which have similar surface properties. This is greatly influenced by many factors(1)such as (1) the extent of adsorption of the collectors (2) the dissolution of the minerals and the interference by the released species and (3) the intera-ction of adsorbed ions with the mineral surface. Direct flotation tests to recover scheelite from tailings failed due to the dilution of the concentrate by calcite. Hence to adopt the flotation process successfully, it is nece-ssary to depress the calcite selectively which is not achi-eved easily(2) due to the presence of small amounts of Ca, Mg and Fe salts and the lean grade of the ores to be treated. Slime coating(3) is also another factor adver-sely affecting the flotation of scheelite.
