Cultures have varying notions about symptom expression and the treatment of mental health issues. Consequently, clients and psychotherapists may or may not share a similar worldview. In the psychotherapy literature there has been increased attention to these complex processes. This survey descriptive study aims to understand how therapists working with culturally diverse clients incorporate sensitivity to cultural differences. Fifteen culturally sensitive mental health care providers working with the Portuguese immigrant community were interviewed about their practices. Specifically, we investigated their understanding of the symptoms, causes and cures for agonias, a culture specific phenomenon. It was found that even though the providers are all Portuguese themselves, the meaning that they ascribed to agonias (anxiety and/or depression) was very different than the meaning ascribed to agonias by community members. The community member’s meanings ranged from indigestion to being on the brink of death. A cluster analysis revealed that clinicians who stated that agonias is anxiety, conducted cognitive behavioral therapy or psychopharmacology, and those that stated agonias had a depressive component tended to use family therapy or psychoanalysis

Acculturation of missionaries: Religious orientation, coping and adjustment

The focus of the present study was the acculturation process of missionaries residing in foreign countries. Combining two theoretical frameworks (religious orientations and sojourner acculturation), the study explored the relationship between the stress/adjustment model of acculturation and religious orientations. Seventy-six missionaries, posted overseas for at least one year, completed several measures, including measures of religious orientation, perceived stress, religious coping, adjustment and anxiety. It was found that quest and immanent religious orientations were negatively correlated with perceived stress while positively correlated with posting satisfaction. Intrinsic religious orientation was found to be negatively correlated with both measures of anxiety and depression. Further research needs to be conducted on missionaries’ acculturation process and the impact that religious beliefs can have on that acculturation

Tunable Hydrogel Substrates for Studying Pathogen-Host Cell Interactions

Extracellular matrix elasticity has been shown to affect a variety of cellular properties. However, the effect it has on pathogen-host cell interaction has yet to be thoroughly evaluated. Furthering our understanding of pathogenic infection mechanisms could be beneficial to the development of vaccinations for poorly understood pathogens as well as new therapies to combat a rapidly growing antibiotic-resistant pathogen population. We evaluated two polymer systems in this study: a polyacrylamide hydrogel system that was functionalized for cell culture and a poly(ethylene glycol)-norbornene hydrogel system that utilizes thiol-ene click chemistry for simple and rapid functionalization and tunability. Our pathogen of interest is Brucella melitensis, a bacteria that affects millions of people worldwide, through livestock death, zoonotic infection, and bioterroristic threat. Since Brucella melitensis primarily targets phagocytes, macrophages were utilized for evaluating the success of the hydrogels in hosting tissue culture. It was determined that the poly(ethylene glycol)-norbornene system had the most success in culturing healthy cells and easily tuning mechanical characteristics. Based on these results, future studies in the Alge Lab will involve seeding macrophages onto poly(ethylene glycol)-norbornene gels of varying elastic moduli and infecting them with Brucella to investigate the influence of extracellular matrix elasticity on Brucella infection rate

    Ts-Tribes andTs-Measures

AbstractWe show that any fundamental triangular norm-basedTs-tribe T,s∈(0,∞), is a weakly generated tribe. Consequently, T is aT-tribe for any measurable t-normTif and only if it is aTs-tribe for somes∈(0,∞). Further we prove that eachTs-measurem,s∈(0,∞], defined on aTs-tribe T, is a generated measure; i.e., the irreducible part in the Butnariu–Klement decomposition ofTs-measures is always trivial

Impact of the Great Recession on Social Assistance Programs in the Eau Claire Area

Color poster with text, images, and graphs. The economic downturn of 2008-09 was so severe that it has become known as The Great Recession and by most accounts the subsequent recovery has been slow to non-existent. National data reflects a continuing demand for social assistance programs. This suggests that, despite a modest recovery based on labor market measures such as employment and unemployment rates, there seems to be a continuing need for social assistance. This study presents data from a variety of local sources illustrating this prolonged hardship and strain on social service programs in the Chippewa Valley.University of Wisconsin--Eau Claire Office of Research and Sponsored Programs; Xcel Energy-Eau Claire; Northwestern Bank-Chippewa Falls

Impact of the Great Recession on Total Employment and Unemployment Rates in the U.S.

Color poster with text, images, maps, and tables. The economic downturn of 2008-09 was so severe that it has become known as the Great Recession, and by most accounts the subsequent recovery has been relatively slow. The most basic method of judging the severity of a recession and the success of a recovery is to look at labor market information. In particular, the unemployment rate and the number of jobs (total employment) are often used for this purpose. This study presents data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics for 2007, 2009 and 2011 using maps to describe the recession and recovery at a national level as well as compare the effects across states.University of Wisconsin--Eau Claire Office of Research and Sponsored Programs; Xcel Energy-Eau Claire; Northwestern Bank-Chippewa Falls
