An Overview of BHIC Subscribers and Content

Between September and October 2013, the BHIC blog posted a questionnaire for readers to fill out. The purpose of the questionnaire was to get a better understanding of who was reading and subscribing to the blog and the content they wanted to see posted to the blog. There were 403 subscribers to the Digest when the questionnaire was sent. The questionnaire was posted to the blog and sent through the Digest three times. There were 105 responses. The original questionnaire has been included as Appendix A

St. Luke’s Hospital Library Advocacy

Project funded as a Continuity of Health Information Award by the National Network of Libraries of Medicine - MidContinental Region for the period of February 15, 2010 – February 28, 2011. Proposal submitted by Karen Wiederaenders, Principal Investigator, from Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City.The project will focus on the information needs of physicians, researchers, nurses, nurse educators, nursing students and other clinical personnel such as nutritionists, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, etc. at Saint Luke’s Health System. The method of inquiry will be surveys (print, electronic, and telephone) and focus groups of key user groups. In the initial phase of the project we anticipate that the survey will garner information about the information needs and habits of our current and potential users. The survey will raise awareness about the library throughout the health system

Changing the Face of Medicine – A Kansas City Academic Medical Library/Community Celebration

Project funded as an Express Outreach Award by the National Network of Libraries of Medicine - MidContinental Region for the period July 1, 2008 - December 31, 2009. Proposal submitted by Amrita Burdick, Principal Investigator, from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.The ALA/NLM traveling exhibition, “Changing the Face of Medicine: Celebrating America’s Women Physicians”, was held in the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area from October 3 to November 11, 2009. The exhibit goals were to celebrate the successes of women in medicine and science and to encourage health career paths for young females. The exhibit was sponsored by four local academic medical libraries and housed in the Archie Dykes Library at the University of Kansas Medical Center. This broad library support provided an excellent opportunity to highlight the contribution of libraries and information access to health care

Online Sound Recordings of Health Information in Many Languages

In October of 2002, the Eccles Health Sciences Library submitted a successful proposal to the National Network of Libraries of Medicine to fund the creation of online recordings of consumer health information in many languages. Project staff located native speakers of most of the respective languages to narrate approximately 200 multilingual health publications. These readings were recorded, digitized, and prepared for Web-based availability, adjacent to the existing pdf documents. The new resource was then promoted through the efforts of project staff as well as other Eccles Library staff.Eccles HS Librar

Using the “Information Rx” Process to Refer Adults and Parents of Children with Metabolic Conditions to the Genetics Home Reference Web Site for Health Information

Genetics Home Reference Project - University of Utah, Department of Biomedical InformaticsThe focus of this evaluation is the Health Information Rx Program for Newborn Screening and Related Genetic Disorders. This program encourages physicians to direct the parents of newborns with metabolic conditions identified by screening to the Genetics Home Reference (GHR) Web site (http://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/). The project involves a pilot project and feasibility study to: a) intervene and provide an information prescription to all parents of Utah newborns who are screened and receive a positive diagnosis of a metabolic condition, b) intervene to urge affected parents to use Genetics Home Reference in order to learn more about their child’s metabolic condition; c) evaluate the impact of both interventions and, d) determine if the pilot is a possible prelude to a regional or national expansion of the proposed interventions

Patient Education in Navajo Country

TC4C Community-Based Partnerships Project funded by the National Network of Libraries of Medicine - MidContinental Region for the period of June 1, 2010 – April 30, 2011. Proposal submitted by Donna Jensen, Principal Investigator, Utah Navajo Health System.By providing better educational information to women, it is estimated that this project will help the 584 patients and 1900 patients currently dealing with the effects of diabetes and cardiovascular disease, respectively, in the UNHS service area. This will be accomplished by providing educational material in audio format (CD) which will be given to each patient. This information will be translated from English to Navajo for those patients that do not speak English or are more comfortable receiving health care information in Navajo
