    The Role of Sexual and Reproductive Rights in Social Work Practice

    The understanding and promotion of sexual and reproductive rights are essential in the social work profession, not only to improve the health status of affected populations but to advocate effectively for social justice and to respond to globalized realities. This article highlights the relevance of sexual and reproductive rights in the philosophical foundation and practice of social work, emphasizes the impact of reproductive health and rights on women's lives, and proposes a social work agenda that will embrace and promote sexual and reproductive rights.     Reducing the environmental impact of surgery on a global scale: systematic review and co-prioritization with healthcare workers in 132 countries

    Background Healthcare cannot achieve net-zero carbon without addressing operating theatres. The aim of this study was to prioritize feasible interventions to reduce the environmental impact of operating theatres. Methods This study adopted a four-phase Delphi consensus co-prioritization methodology. In phase 1, a systematic review of published interventions and global consultation of perioperative healthcare professionals were used to longlist interventions. In phase 2, iterative thematic analysis consolidated comparable interventions into a shortlist. In phase 3, the shortlist was co-prioritized based on patient and clinician views on acceptability, feasibility, and safety. In phase 4, ranked lists of interventions were presented by their relevance to high-income countries and low–middle-income countries. Results In phase 1, 43 interventions were identified, which had low uptake in practice according to 3042 professionals globally. In phase 2, a shortlist of 15 intervention domains was generated. In phase 3, interventions were deemed acceptable for more than 90 per cent of patients except for reducing general anaesthesia (84 per cent) and re-sterilization of ‘single-use’ consumables (86 per cent). In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for high-income countries were: introducing recycling; reducing use of anaesthetic gases; and appropriate clinical waste processing. In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for low–middle-income countries were: introducing reusable surgical devices; reducing use of consumables; and reducing the use of general anaesthesia. Conclusion This is a step toward environmentally sustainable operating environments with actionable interventions applicable to both high– and low–middle–income countries

    Comparison of Probabilistic versus Non-probabilistic Electronic Nose Classification Methods in an Animal Model

    An electronic nose (eNose) is a promising device for exhaled breath tests. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is the most used technique for eNose sensor data analysis, and the use of probabilistic methods is scarce. In this paper, we developed probabilistic models based on the logistic regression framework and compared them to non-probabilistic classification methods in a case study of predicting Acute Liver Failure (ALF) in 16 rats in which ALF was surgically induced. Performance measures included accuracy, AUC and Brier score. Robustness was evaluated by randomly selecting subsets of repeatedly measured sensor values before calculating the model variables. Internal validation for both aspects was obtained by a leave-one-out scheme. The probabilistic methods achieved equally good performance and robustness results when appropriate feature extraction techniques were applied. Since probabilistic models allow employing sound methods for assessing calibration and uncertainty of predictions, they are a proper choice for decision making.     Glial suppression and post-traumatic stress disorder: A cross-sectional study of 1,520 world trade center responders

    Background: Chronically re-experiencing the memory of a traumatic event might cause a glial response. This study examined whether glial activation would be associated with PTSD in a study of responders present after the 9/11 World Trade Center attacks without comorbid cerebrovascular disease. Methods: Plasma was retrieved from 1,520 WTC responders and stored for a cross-sectional sample of responders of varying levels of exposure and PTSD. Plasma levels (pg/ml) of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) were assayed. Because stroke and other cerebrovascular diseases cause distributional shifts in GFAP levels, multivariable-adjusted finite mixture models analyzed GFAP distributions in responders with and without possible cerebrovascular disease. Results: Responders were aged 56.3 years and primarily male; 11.07% (n = 154) had chronic PTSD. Older age was associated with increased GFAP, whereas higher body mass was associated with decreased GFAP. Multivariable-adjusted finite mixture models revealed that severe re-experiencing trauma from 9/11 was associated with lower GFAP (B = −0.558, p = 0.003). Conclusion: This study presents evidence of reduced plasma GFAP levels among WTC responders with PTSD. Results suggest re-experiencing traumatic events might cause glial suppression
