The Transvaal Agrarian class struggle in the South African war, 1899–1902

    No full text
This article examines aspects of the rural class struggle between Boer landlords and African producers and workers in the Transvaal during the South African War of 1899 –1902. Through an analysis of the shifting balance of class forces in the countryside during this period of upheaval, it explores the connections between war and class struggle. It advances argument and evidence for first, the overturning of Boer mastery over Africans and for its sudden restoration after 1902. Particular attention is paid to the crucial question of why rebellious rural workers were unable to retain their ascendancy and make a revolution in the countryside. © 1986 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC
