Ornamental fish - prospects for culture
In 1978 work was initiated to culture
the -blood clam Anadara granosa in the
Bay. A 100 m2 area was selected, an
elderly clam fisherman from the village
was entrusted with the watch and ward.
Wide publicity was given in the village to
create awareness. In the evening, the site
was fenced with dry palmyra leaves (to
serve as pen enclosure). Nylon netting
was not preferred due to possible poachin
Tuna livebaits
The fishery, biology and dynamics of livebaits used in the tuna
pole and line fishery are discussed based on earlier and current
work. Their catch in Minicoy showed interannual variation with an
average of 7569 kg and CPUE of 2.5 kg. Clupeids dominated forming
39.5% followed by caesionids[32. l%).apogonids(22.5%} and
pomacentrids(5.6%). At Agatti, the mean catch was 52 tonnes with
a CPUE of 14 kg comprised exclusively of Spratelloides delicatulus.
Biological characteristics such as size, food and feeding,
sex-ratio,size at first maturity, spawning and fecundity,
length-weight relationship etc of dominant species are given. Stock
assessment studies on S. delicatulus and Archamia fucata indicated
their over exploitation. Various measures for management and
conservation of the resources along with future research priorities
are indicated
Economics of prawn culture in Vypeen, Kerala, with emphasis on some little-known facts
With the increasing demand for prawns in export market, extensive culture practices have given
way to semi-intensive or intensive systems in many parts of the country. The perennial and most of the
seasonal ponds of Vypeen Island near Kochi are still of extensive nature with little or no management.
Although, some studies on economics of prawn farming in seasonal ponds are available (George, 1974,
1980; Purushan, 1987; Sathiadhas et al., 1989), such information on the perennial fields is almost
lacking. Diseases, parasites, predators and competitors cause concern in culture systems (Shang, 1981).
Yet, it seems to be ignored in economic analysis except on a very few occasions, as for instance by
Mammen et al. (1980) and Beynon et al. (1981). The present paper, therefore, reports lhe economics of
the perennial prawn culture fields in Vypeen pointing out what harm predation and disease cause in
production. Some observations on the seasonal system are also made for comparison
Economics of Clam Exploitation from Backwaters at Azhicode - A Case Study
The exploitation of clams at Azhicode
takes place throughout the year. At the
onset of south west monsoon the flood water
washes down the clam shells and accumulates
them near the bar mouth from where
they are immediately fished

On the landing of bowmouth guitar fish Rhina ancylostoma at Visakhapatnam Harbour.
A small mechanized trawler which operated at a depth of 60 to 90 m landed a guitarfish identified as Rhina ancylostoma (Class : Elasmobranchii, Order : Rajiformes, Family : Rhinobatidae) at Vishakhapatnam Harbour On 15 July 2004,. The specimen had the characteristic spiky thorns over the eyes and on the back and shoulders with numerous white spots dorsally on fins, body and tail. The specimen landed is probably immature. The morphometric measurements of the specimen are described in this paper
Several biases in evaluation process of professors by undergraduate students
The evaluation of the teaching process uses questionnaires applied to the students, giving them the power of be anonymous in their responses. However, if at the end of the course some students get low grades, at the moment of their responses to the questionnaires they can have an attitud of revenge against the teacher, manifested by bad evaluation to the teachers. There are other situations that interfere with students responses leading to biases in evaluation process. We reviewed factors that interfere in the teacher evaluation through questionnaires causing biases and, we also tryed to find alternatives to diminish biases in evaluation. We search original articles and reviews in web sites databases about biases in professor evaluation process and comments about avoid these biases. We also conducted a manual search for relevant articles in the reference lists of articles. Several factors can be biases in teachig evaluation proccess as feeling of revenge, more difficult course, younger students and gender male students evaluators. Non-white teachers, female teachers, older teachers, non-charism teachers, non-good look teachers also get lower grades. Teacher evaluations through questionnaires must be viewed with caution due to several biases. Since questionnaires are difficult to be replaced in the evaluation of teachers, we discuss alternatives in order to avoid injustice to the teachers
Status of exploitation of tunas at Agatti Island, Lakshadweep
i'ole and line fishing for tunas is a vital component of the fishery of Lakshadweep
'orming about 80% of the total tuna caught in these islands. The northern island of
\gatti is the largest tuna fishing area contributing 35-40%. During the period from
1994 -'97, the annual average catch was 1,280 t with CPUE of 347 kg and CPUB
catch f)er unit bait) of 22 kg. Fishing season conunences from late November and
continues up to May with peak catches during December to March. Skipjack
Katsuwonus pelamis) is the major sjjecies caught followed by Auxis thazard, Thunnus
ilbacares and Euthynnus affinis. Fishing grounds near Agatti subscribed 54% of the
;atch followed by Perumal Par forming 43%. The size of K.pelamis caught ranged
irom 20 to 76 cm with modes at 48 and 54 cm. Of late, the tuna fishery of Lakshadweep
s almost stagnant but there is scope for its expansion. In addition to the recommenlations
made by earlier workers to expand the fishery, there is an urgent need to
>btain data on some major aspects like population dynamics, migratory behaviour,
invironmental factors influencing the distribution of various tima species and their
iggregation around logs, FADs and seamounts
Mangrove ecosystems of Minicoy Island, Lakshadweep
Mangroves play an Important role in coral
reef ecosystems. The fringe and basin type mangrove
forests act as depositional areas and are
effective binders of sediments. This reduces the
sediment loads in coastal waters. Trapping and
stabilizing sediments is important for adjacent
coral reefs because it prevents abrasion and burial
of reefs during stormy conditions
