ICT Sector, Globalization and Urban Economic Growth: Evidence from Bangalore (India)

    Get PDF
This paper aims at economic analysis of economic globalization and urban growth of Bangalore, the Silicon Valley of India, as they are related to ICT sector. Overall analyses offer new insights and evidences for ICT sector as a major contributor for degree of economic globalization and urban economic growth, mainly driven by ICT services. Bangalore’s performance is remarkable compared to all-India level and OECD averages. These results offer empirical justification for continuing with and strengthening of public policies for promotion of globalizing and growth-oriented ICT sector in Bangalore with implications for comparable Indian and Asian cities.globalization, ICT sector, urbanization, urban economic growth, Bangalore

    Classical q-deformed dynamics

On the basis of the quantum q-oscillator algebra in the framework of quantum groups and non-commutative q-differential calculus, we investigate a possible q-deformation of the classical Poisson bracket in order to extend a generalized q-deformed dynamics in the classical regime. In this framework, classical q-deformed kinetic equations, Kramers and Fokker-Planck equations, are also studied. Materials Development for Indian Nuclear Power Programme: an Industry Perspective

    Get PDF
AbstractMaterials play very crucial role for a safe, reliable and economic operation of nuclear power plants. Materials used in nuclear reactors encounter hostile environment and aggressive media during service, and are expected to retain their structural and metallurgical integrity over a long period of use. The major challenges are the effect of radiation on embrittlement, creep, erosion, corrosion, radiation induced growth, swelling, stress corrosion cracking, hydrogen embrittlement and radioactivity build up. In order to realize a high degree of reliabilit y and at the same time meet the imposing challenges, material specification and acceptance criteria are extremely stringent and the products have to undergo a detailed testing and characterization prior to their use. To ensure the conformance to the specification, processes need to be developed which involves melting the alloy with stringent chemistry control, optimizing thermo-mechanical treatment and modifying heat treatment schedule suitably to achieve mechanical properties.A typical nuclear power plant makes use of nuclear fuel materials such as uranium, structural materials such as zirconium alloys, stainless steels, nickel base alloys as well as low alloy and carbon steels. The paper outlines processing methodologies and gives an overview of some of the structural materials

Management of Coffee Leaf Rust Disease in India: Evidence for Channels of Communication

    Get PDF
Management of coffee leaf rust (CLR) disease is essential to avoid its resultant production losses of Arabica coffee. Communication channels provide coffee farmers with the required knowledge for management by the recommended disease control methods and their applications. In this context, this paper analyses the role of communication channels for management of CLR by using a newly collected household level data of 575 Arabica coffee farmers in India. Management is focused on cultivation of resistant varieties and application of chemical sprays. Two methods of analyses are developed: Descriptions based on spatially aggregate data. Second, estimations based on Binary Logit Model using individual data. Descriptions show that prevalence of CLR is universal; key channels of communication are fellow farmers, extension workers and television; and desired channels of communications include on-farm demonstration and training workshops. While individual communication is most preferred channel, farmers’ associations are considered useful institutional channels of communication. Estimations distinguish communication channels by fellow farmers and extension workers and show significant differences in nature and extent of impact of these communication channels on CLR management by resistant varieties and chemical sprays. These results have important implications for identifying and improving the current and future information needs and channels of communication for effective management of CLR, especially for small farmers with lower educational attainments in India. However, the approach and implications of this paper are of general relevance and applicability for other coffee growing countries in Asia and Africa
