Are Epidermal Barrier Defects Responsible for the Underlying Pathology of Atopic Dermatitis?

Atopic dermatitis, often referred to as eczema, is a chronic inflammatory skin condition frequently seen in young children. It is a complex disease involving environmental factors, genetics and immune dysregulation. There is currently no cure with conflicting opinions from physicians regarding treatment and management. A clearer understanding of pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis can hopefully lead to new and improved treatment options for patients. Current evidence seems to support epidermal skin barrier defects as the cause of this disease. This paper seeks to investigate if this out-in hypothesis can be responsible as the sole pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis. To write this paper a systematic search of online databases was conducted to find relevant studies. Through analysis of the research it can be concluded that although epidermal skin barrier defects definitely play an important role in the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis, further research will most likely blend existing theories

Role of Physicians in Addressing Food Insecurity in Vermont Seniors

Introduction: This study investigated Vermont physicians’ awareness of - and engagement in – addressing food insecurity experienced by their elderly patients. This information is needed to better understand the role physicians play in solving this problem and to know how education and access to services could ensure that the needs of elders are met in a culturally sensitive manner. Many elders must choose between paying bills, buying medication or buying food. Some elders are unaware that they qualify for food assistance, or would feel stigmatized using it. Nationally, 56% of physicians reported that they were not knowledgeable about food insecurity. Food insecurity can be screened for by using Hunger Free Vermont’s Two Question Screen. Screening, followed by a multidisciplinary team approach with contributions from dietitians, geriatricians, social workers and psychologists may be the most effective way of assessing at-risk patients.https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/comphp_gallery/1214/thumbnail.jp

Submillimeter CO emission from shock-heated gas in the L1157 outflow

We present the CO J=6-5, 4-3, and 3-2 spectra from the blueshifted gas of the outflow driven by the low-mass class 0 protostar in the L1157 dark cloud. Strong submillimeter CO emission lines with T_mb > 30 K have been detected at 63" (~0.13 pc) south from the protostar. It is remarkable that the blue wings in the submillimeter lines are stronger by a factor of 3-4 than that of the CO J=1-0 emission line. The CO line ratios suggest that the blueshifted lobe of this outflow consists of moderately dense gas of n(H_2) = (1-3)x10^4 cm^-3 heated to T_kin = 50-170 K.It is also suggested that the kinetic temperature of the outflowing gas increases from ~80 K near the protostar to ~170 K at the shocked region in the lobe center, toward which the largest velocity dispersion of the CO emission is observed. A remarkable correlation between the kinetic temperature and velocity dispersion of the CO emission along the lobe provides us with direct evidence that the molecular gas at the head of the jet-driven bow shock is indeed heated kinematically. The lower temperature of ~80 K measured at the other shocked region near the end of the lobe is explained if this shock is in a later evolutionary stage, in which the gas has been cooled mainly through radiation of the CO rotational lines.Comment: 10 pages, 4 PDF figures, APJL in pres

The visceral embodiment of digital pleasures

This panel explores digital pleasures that arise through the entanglement of bodies and digital technologies. Focusing on the digital structures and affordances that facilitate seeking, receiving and giving pleasure we analyse the ways in which intimacy is not only interactive, but also profoundly embodied. Haraway’s work in particular highlights the importance of taking seriously the nexus of human bodies and technologies and attending to the ways in which technologies not only deliver and mediate pleasure, but potentially expand upon our capacity to experience it. This panel explores how mediated practices engage the body as a site of pleasure and embodied affective intensity. Within this frame, we suggest that digitally mediated pleasures, while widely consumed, still have a hint of the ‘fringe’ or ‘subversive’. As well as proposing a theoretical framework for understanding embodied digital pleasures, this panel also examines specific examples of digital pleasure from sex to drugs and sound. To date the research corpus has largely focused upon the micro-social interactions of digital intimacies. This emphasis on relational intimacy puts the body into the background of the digitally mediated encounter and limits the ways in which we can talk about embodiment, sex and pleasure online. Embodied pleasure is intrinsic to the human condition, and digital media is deeply embedded in contemporary life.
