    Imbalance of CPU temperatures in a blade system and its impact for power consumption of fans

    We are now developing a new metric of data center power efficiency to fairly evaluate the contribution of each improvement for power efficiency. In order to develop it, we built a testbed of a data center and measured power consumption of each components and environmental variables in some detail, including the power consumption and temperature of each node, rack and air conditioning unit, as well as load on the CPU, Disk I/O and the network. In these measurements we found that there was a significant imbalance of CPU temperatures that caused an imbalance in the power consumption of fans. We clarified the relationship between CPU load and fan speed, and showed that scheduling or rearrangement of nodes could reduce the power consumption of fans. We reduced fan power consumption by a maximum of 62% and total power consumption by a maximum of 12% by changing the scheduling of five nodes, changing the nodes used from hot nodes to cool nodes

    Structural dynamics of cereal mitochondrial genomes as revealed by complete nucleotide sequencing of the wheat mitochondrial genome

    The application of a new gene-based strategy for sequencing the wheat mitochondrial genome shows its structure to be a 452 528 bp circular molecule, and provides nucleotide-level evidence of intra-molecular recombination. Single, reciprocal and double recombinant products, and the nucleotide sequences of the repeats that mediate their formation have been identified. The genome has 55 genes with exons, including 35 protein-coding, 3 rRNA and 17 tRNA genes. Nucleotide sequences of seven wheat genes have been determined here for the first time. Nine genes have an exon–intron structure. Gene amplification responsible for the production of multicopy mitochondrial genes, in general, is species-specific, suggesting the recent origin of these genes. About 16, 17, 15, 3.0 and 0.2% of wheat mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) may be of genic (including introns), open reading frame, repetitive sequence, chloroplast and retro-element origin, respectively. The gene order of the wheat mitochondrial gene map shows little synteny to the rice and maize maps, indicative that thorough gene shuffling occurred during speciation. Almost all unique mtDNA sequences of wheat, as compared with rice and maize mtDNAs, are redundant DNA. Features of the gene-based strategy are discussed, and a mechanistic model of mitochondrial gene amplification is proposed

    AbstractOBJECTIVESThe study compared the influence of sympathetic stimulation on transmural and spatial dispersion of repolarization between LQT1 and LQT2 forms of congenital long QT syndrome (LQTS).BACKGROUNDCardiac events are more associated with sympathetic stimulation in LQT1 than in LQT2 or LQT3 syndrome. Experimental studies have suggested that the interval between Tpeak and Tend (Tp-e) in the electrocardiogram (ECG) reflects transmural dispersion of repolarization across the ventricular wall.METHODSWe recorded 87-lead body-surface ECGs before and after epinephrine infusion (0.1 μg/kg/min) in 13 LQT1, 6 LQT2, and 7 control patients. The Q-Tend (QT-e), Q-Tpeak (QT-p), and Tp-e were measured automatically from 87-lead ECGs, corrected by Bazett’s method (QTc-e, QTc-p, Tcp-e), and averaged among all 87-leads and among 24-leads, which reflect the potential from the left ventricular free wall. As an index of spatial dispersion of repolarization, the dispersion of QTc-e (QTc-eD) and QTc-p (QTc-pD) were obtained among 87-leads and among 24-leads, and were defined as the interval between the maximum and the minimum of the QTc-e and the QTc-p, respectively.RESULTSEpinephrine significantly increased the mean QTc-e but not the mean QTc-p, resulting in a significant increase in the mean Tcp-e in both LQT1 and LQT2, but not in control patients. The epinephrine-induced increases in the mean QTc-e and Tcp-e were larger in LQT1 than in LQT2, and were more pronounced when the averaged data were obtained from 24-leads than from 87-leads. Epinephrine increased the maximum QTc-e but not the minimum QTc-e, producing a significant increase in the QTc-eD in both LQT1 and LQT2 patients, but not in control patients. The increase in the QTc-eD was larger in LQT1 than in LQT2 patients.CONCLUSIONSOur data suggest that sympathetic stimulation produces a greater increase in both transmural and spatial dispersion of repolarization in LQT1 than in LQT2 syndrome, and this may explain why LQT1 patients are more sensitive to sympathetic stimulation

    Differential effects of beta-blockade on dispersion of repolarization in the absence and presence of sympathetic stimulation between the lqt1 and lqt2 forms of congenital long qt syndrome

    AbstractObjectivesThis study compared the effects of beta-blockade on transmural and spatial dispersion of repolarization (TDR and SDR, respectively) between the LQT1 and LQT2 forms of congenital long QT syndrome (LQTS).BackgroundThe LQT1 form is more sensitive to sympathetic stimulation and more responsive to beta-blockers than either the LQT2 or LQT3 forms.MethodsEighty-seven-lead, body-surface electrocardiograms (ECGs) were recorded before and after epinephrine infusion (0.1 μg/kg body weight per min) in the absence and presence of oral propranolol (0.5–2.0 mg/kg per day) in 11 LQT1 patients and 11 LQT2 patients. The Q-Tendinterval, the Q-Tpeakinterval and the interval between Tpeakand Tend(Tp-e), representing TDR, were measured and averaged from 87-lead ECGs and corrected by Bazett’s method (corrected Q-Tendinterval [cQTe], corrected Q-Tpeakinterval [cQTp] and corrected interval between Tpeakand Tend[cTp-e]). The dispersion of cQTe(cQTe-D) was obtained among 87 leads and was defined as the interval between the maximum and minimum values of cQTe.ResultsPropranolol in the absence of epinephrine significantly prolonged the mean cQTpvalue but not the mean cQTevalue, thus decreasing the mean cTp-evalue in both LQT1 and LQT2 patients; the differences with propranolol were significantly larger in LQT1 than in LQT2 (p < 0.05). The maximum cQTe, minimum cQTeand cQTe-D were not changed with propranolol. Propranolol completely suppressed the influence of epinephrine in prolonging the mean cQTe, maximum cQTeand minimum cQTevalues, as well as increasing the mean cTp-eand cQTe-D values in both groups.ConclusionsBeta-blockade under normal sympathetic tone produces a greater decrease in TDR in the LQT1 form than in the LQT2 form, explaining the superior effectiveness of beta-blockers in LQT1 versus LQT2. Beta-blockers also suppress the influence of sympathetic stimulation in increasing TDR and SDR equally in LQT1 and LQT2 syndrome

    Reference values for the locomotive syndrome risk test quantifying mobility of 8681 adults aged 20–89 years: A cross-sectional nationwide study in Japan

    Background The locomotive syndrome risk test was developed to quantify the decrease in mobility among adults, which could eventually lead to disability. The purpose of this study was to establish reference values for the locomotive syndrome risk test for adults and investigate the influence of age and sex. Methods We analyzed 8681 independent community dwellers (3607 men, 5074 women). Data pertaining to locomotive syndrome risk test (the two-step test, the stand-up test, and the 25-question geriatric locomotive function scale [GLFS-25]) scores were collected from seven administrative areas of Japan. Results The reference values of the three test scores were generated and all three test scores gradually decreased among young-to-middle-aged individuals and rapidly decreased in individuals aged over 60 years. The stand-up test score began decreasing significantly from the age of 30 years. The trajectories of decrease in the two-step test score with age was slightly different between men and women especially among the middle-aged individuals. The two physical test scores were more sensitive to aging than the self-reported test score. Conclusion The reference values generated in this study could be employed to determine whether an individual has mobility comparable to independent community dwellers of the same age and sex

    Nationwide retrospective observational study of idiopathic dendriform pulmonary ossification : clinical features with a progressive phenotype

    Background: Diffuse pulmonary ossification is a specific lung condition that is accompanied by underlying diseases. However, idiopathic dendriform pulmonary ossification (IDPO) is extremely rare, and the clinical features remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to report the clinical characteristics of IDPO. Methods: We conducted a nationwide survey of patients with IDPO from 2017 to 2019 in Japan and evaluated the clinical, radiological, and histopathological findings of patients diagnosed with IDPO. Results: Twenty-two cases of IDPO were identified. Most subjects (82%) were male, aged 22-56 years (mean (SD), 37.9 (9.1)) at diagnosis. Nearly 80% of the subjects were asymptomatic, and the condition was discovered during a medical check-up. However, 36% of the subjects showed a decline in forced vital capacity (%FVC) predicted <80% at diagnosis. The typical radiological features of high-resolution CT (HRCT) are calcified branching structures that are predominantly distributed in the lower lung fields without any other conspicuous finding. Histopathological analysis also showed dendriform ossified lesions from the intraluminal areas to interstitial areas. Notably, during the follow-up period of 20 years, disease progression was found in 88% on HRCT and more than 50% on pulmonary function tests (FVC and/or forced expiratory volume in 1s).     Clinical and Functional Characterization of URAT1 Variants

    Idiopathic renal hypouricaemia is an inherited form of hypouricaemia, associated with abnormal renal handling of uric acid. There is excessive urinary wasting of uric acid resulting in hypouricaemia. Patients may be asymptomatic, but the persistent urinary abnormalities may manifest as renal stone disease, and hypouricaemia may manifest as exercise induced acute kidney injury. Here we have identified Macedonian and British patients with hypouricaemia, who presented with a variety of renal symptoms and signs including renal stone disease, hematuria, pyelonephritis and nephrocalcinosis. We have identified heterozygous missense mutations in SLC22A12 encoding the urate transporter protein URAT1 and correlate these genetic findings with functional characterization. Urate handling was determined using uptake experiments in HEK293 cells. This data highlights the importance of the URAT1 renal urate transporter in determining serum urate concentrations and the clinical phenotypes, including nephrolithiasis, that should prompt the clinician to suspect an inherited form of renal hypouricaemia

    模型飛行機の部品と技術を応用し,2種類の小型無人飛行機,Ant-Plane 3と6を開発した.2011年1月,南極キング・ジョージ島(King George Island)でブランスフィールド海盆(Brans?eld Basin)の空中磁気観測を計画したが,悪天候等で満足できる飛行ができなかった.2011年12月にはリビングストン島(Livingston Island)にあるセント・クリメント基地(St. Kliment Ohridski Base)からデセプション島(Deception Island)とサウス・ベイ(South Bay)にAnt-Planeを飛行させ,空中磁気観測と航空写真撮影を行った.デセプション島では,島の北半分9×18 kmの範囲を高度780 mで,3時間07分,302.4 kmを飛行し,空中磁気観測を行った.この結果からデセプション島の北半分とその周辺海域の磁気異常を明らかにすることができた.デセプション島とサウス・ベイでの飛行からは良好な画像が得られ,氷河の分布やその構造が撮影された.デセプション島の飛行は,無人機が南極の地平線を越えて科学観測をした数少ない飛行の1つである.暴風圏南端の過酷な自然条件の中で成功したことは,南極での無人飛行機による科学観測が可能であることを示した.また実機による航空機観測と比較し,極めて大きな費用対効果を実証した.Two small unmanned aerial vehicles, Ant-Plane 6 and Ant-Plane 3, were assembled using parts and technologies developed for model airplanes. The aerial vehicles were scheduled to conduct aero magnetic and photographic surveys of the Brans?eld Basin, from a takeoff runway at Marsh Air?eld on the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica, during January 2011. However, the scheduled surveys were not conducted on account of poor weather. Research was later conducted on a glacier, using a takeoff runway at St. Kliment Ohridski Base, Livingston Island, during December 2011. A ?ight from St. Kliment Ohridski Base to Deception Island yielded satisfactory results; the total distance of 302.4 km was traversed in 3 h 7 min (3:07). On this ?ight, aeromagnetic and aerial photographic data were obtained from an altitude of 780 m for a 9×18 km area on the northern half of Deception Island. Aerial photographs of Deception Island and South Bay showed the distributions of glaciers and their crevasses. The Ant-Plane ?ew over the Antarctic horizon and surveyed above Deception Island. That was the successful venture of this kind, demonstrating that airborne surveys by Ant-Planes are useful for Antarctic research investigations. Airborne surveys provide a safe and economical approach to data acquisition as compared with manned aerial operations
