    Analysis of the Socioeconomic Difficulties Affecting the Suicide Rate in Japan

    This paper focuses on the drastic increase observed in the Japanese male suicide rate in the late 1990s and early 2000s and confirms unemployment and personal bankruptcy to be the associated socioeconomic factors behind the male suicide variation. Personal bankruptcy is also confirmed to be significant in the female suicide variation. The relationship is confirmed through a pooled data analysis by a middle-aged group and by prefecture. Further, the paper focused on the association between the unemployment rate and suicide mortality by incorporating the reasons for unemployment in the monthly regression. Next, we identified a significant association between male suicide variations and changes in some of the reasons for being unemployed. The interpretation of the results implies that the risk of unemployment among men has been mitigated by the unemployment insurance rather than the bias in the reasons reported and/or mental disorder in Japan.

    Structure of Yttrium and Phosphorus-Containing Microspheres Prepared by Spray Dry Method

    Microspheres containing yttrium (Y) and/or phosphorus (P) around 25 µm are useful for radioembolization therapy because they are activated to β-emitter by neutron bombardment and infused in blood vessels in the neighborhood of tumors to irradiateβ-rays to the tumors. In this study, we attempt to prepare Y and P-containing microspheres by spray drying method. Starting solution containing yttrium nitrate and phosphoric acid in equimolar ratio was spray dried under various conditions. Microspheres 5-30 µm in size are obtained when the starting solution with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) binder was spray-dried at the atomizing pressure of 0.05 MPa. When the microspheres were heated at 1100ºC for 1 h, they precipitated Y-containing crystals such as yttrium phosphate (YPO4), yttrium oxide (Y2O3), yttrium polyphosphate (Y(PO3)3) and yttrium tetraphosphate (Y2P4O13) but most of them were ruptured. Without the PVA binder, small microspheres around 5 µm in size were formed but their shape remained even after the heat treatment. We found that the atomizing pressure of spray dryer remarkably affects the size of microspheres and PVA binder is essential to obtain microspheres around 25 µm, but addition of pH adjuster to starting solution is not essential.     Evaluation of the Luciferase Assay-Based In Vitro Elicitation Test for Serum IgE

    ABSTRACTBackgroundAn in vitro elicitation test employing human high-affinity IgE receptor-expressing rat mast cell lines appears to be a useful method for measuring mast cell activation using a patient's IgE and an allergen; however, such cell lines are sensitive to human complements in the serum. We have recently developed a new luciferase-reporting mast cell line (RS-ATL8) to detect IgE crosslinking-induced luciferase expression (EXiLE) with relatively low quantities of serum IgE.MethodsA total of 30 patients suspected of having egg white (EW) allergy were subjected to an oral food challenge (OFC) test; then, the performances of EW-specific serum IgE (CAP-FEIA), EW-induced degranulation, and EXiLE responses in RS-ATL8 cells were compared using receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. The patients' sera were diluted to 1:100, which causes no cytotoxicity when sensitizing the RS-ATL8 cells for the degranulation and EXiLE tests.ResultsThe area under the ROC curves was highest in the EXiLE test (0.977), followed by CAP-FEIA (0.926) and degranulation (0.810). At an optimal cutoff range (1.648-1.876) calculated from the ROC curve of the EXiLE test, sensitivity and specificity were 0.944 and 0.917, respectively. A 95% positive predictive value was given at a cutoff level of 2.054 (fold increase in luciferase expression) by logistic regression analysis. Conclusions: In contrast to in vivo tests, the EXiLE test appears to be a useful tool in diagnosing patients suspected of having IgE-dependent EW allergy without the risk of severe systemic reactions

    We show that the pressure-temperature phase diagram of the Mott insulator Ca2_{2}RuO4_{4} features a metal-insulator transition at 0.5GPa: at 300K from paramagnetic insulator to paramagnetic quasi-two-dimensional metal; at TT \leq 12K from antiferromagnetic insulator to ferromagnetic, highly anisotropic, three-dimensional metal. % We compare the metallic state to that of the structurally related p-wave superconductor Sr2_{2}RuO4_{4}, and discuss the importance of structural distortions, which are expected to couple strongly to pressure.Comment: 4 pages, 4figure

    Combined Gastrectomy with Adjacent Organs in T4 Gastric Cancer : Therapeutic Results and Indication

    The postoperative morbidity, mortality and survival of 244 T4 gastric cancer patients were examined to assess the therapeutic results and to clarify the indication for combined gastrectomy with adjacent (T4) organs. A total of 190 combined and 54 simple gastrectomies were performed during the 25-year period between 1969 and 1994. Fourteen (7.4%) and 7 (13.0%) patients died of the complications after combined and simple gastrectomies respectively. No statistical significant difference was found in the mortality rates between the gastrectomies. The histological examination of 190 resected specimens by the combined gastrectomy with T4 organs revealed that gastric resections with conclusive curability A, B and C were performed in 33 (17.4%), 84 (44.2%) and 73 (38.4%) cases respectively. Significant differences (P < 0.01) among 3 survival curves of the patients with curability A, B and C were found, and the 5-year survival rates were 65.5%, 35.4% and 9.2% respectively. The survival curve of 176 patients with combined gastrectomy was significantly (P < 0.01) higher than that of 47 patients with simple gastrectomy, and the 5-year survival rates were 31.3% and 4.3%. However, the survival curve and the 5-year survival rate of the patients with simple gastrectomy were not statistically different from those of the patients with curability C. These results suggest that combined gastrectomy with T4 organs in T4 gastric cancer may be indicated for the patients with surgical curability B, but not surgical curability C

    X-ray Irradiation Induced Discharge of Spherical Void in Epoxy Resin

    It is crucial for proper insulation design of cast resin transformer to consider voids and delamination which might exist in cast molding process and/or under long-term operation because of several surface boundaries between resin and conductor. Should such defects in the insulation system exist, it would lead to reduction of the life of the apparatus. In this report, we investigate the relation between the void size and apparent charge of partial discharge (PD) occurring in a model simulating the insulation system of cast resin transformer. It is also important to determine necessary PD detection sensitivity of PD test in a factory as well as in a field. In addition, we investigate X-ray irradiation induced discharge of spherical void in epoxy resin. Physical consideration of the effect of X-ray irradiation on void discharges in epoxy resin was also made.     Search for Human-Specific Proteins Based on Availability Scores of Short Constituent Sequences: Identification of a WRWSH Protein in Human Testis

    Little is known about protein sequences unique in humans. Here, we performed alignment-free sequence comparisons based on the availability (frequency bias) of short constituent amino acid (aa) sequences (SCSs) in proteins to search for human-specific proteins. Focusing on 5-aa SCSs (pentats), exhaustive comparisons of availability scores among the human proteome and other nine mammalian proteomes in the nonredundant (nr) database identified a candidate protein containing WRWSH, here called FAM75, as human-specific. Examination of various human genome sequences revealed that FAM75 had genomic DNA sequences for either WRWSH or WRWSR due to a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP). FAM75 and its related protein FAM205A were found to be produced through alternative splicing. The FAM75 transcript was found only in humans, but the FAM205A transcript was also present in other mammals. In humans, both FAM75 and FAM205A were expressed specifically in testis at the mRNA level, and they were immunohistochemically located in cells in seminiferous ducts and in acrosomes in spermatids at the protein level, suggesting their possible function in sperm development and fertilization. This study highlights a practical application of SCS-based methods for protein searches and suggests possible contributions of SNP variants and alternative splicing of FAM75 to human evolution
