    Psychological characteristics of Japanese patients with chronic pain assessed by the Rorschach test

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The increasing number of patients with chronic pain in Japan has become a major issue in terms of the patient's quality of life, medical costs, and related social problems. Pain is a multi-dimensional experience with physiological, affective, cognitive, behavioral and social components, and recommended to be managed via a combination of bio-psycho-social aspects. However, a biomedical approach is still the dominant method of pain treatment in Japan. The current study aimed to evaluate comprehensive psychological functions and processes in Japanese chronic pain patients.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The Rorschach Comprehensive System was administered to 49 in-patients with non-malignant chronic pain. Major variables and frequencies from the test were then compared to normative data from non-patient Japanese adults by way of the t-test and chi-square test.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Patients exhibited high levels of emotional distress with a sense of helplessness with regard to situational stress, confusion, and ambivalent feelings. These emotions were managed by the patients in an inappropriate manner. Cognitive functions resulted in moderate dysfunction in all stages. Information processing tended to focus upon minute features in an inflexible manner. Mediational dysfunction was likely to occur with unstable affective conditions. Ideation was marked by pessimistic and less effective thinking. Since patients exhibited negative self-perception, their interpersonal relationship skills tended to be ineffective. Originally, our patients displayed average psychological resources for control, stress tolerance, and social skills for interpersonal relationships. However, patient coping styles were either situation- or emotion-dependent, and patients were more likely to exhibit emotional instability influenced by external stimuli, resulting in increased vulnerability to pain.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Data gathered from the Rorschach test suggested psychological approaches to support chronic pain patients that are likely to be highly beneficial, and we thus recommend their incorporation into the course of current pain treatments.</p

    Mixed-State Thermodynamics of Superconductors with Moderately Large Paramagnetic Effects

    Effects of Pauli paramagnetism on thermodynamic quantities in a vortex state, such as the specific heat CC and magnetization MM, are studied using the quasiclassical Eilenberger formalism. We demonstrate that with an increase of paramagnetic depairing effect, the sigh of the curvature of the field dependence of CC changes from negative to positive, and that the Maki parameter κ2\kappa_2 becomes an increasing function of temperature. Our results provide a natural explanation for the unusual field dependence of CC seen in CeCoIn5_5 in terms of the paramagnetic effect.Comment: Published in J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 74, 2181 (2005

    Magnetic field dependence of superconducting energy gaps in YNi2B2C: Evidence of multiband superconductivity

    We present results of in field directional point contact spectroscopy (DPCS) study in the quaternary borocarbide superconductor YNi2B2C, which is characterized by a highly anisotropic superconducting gap function. For I||a, the superconducting energy gap (D), decreases linearly with magnetic field and vanishes around 3.25T which is well below the upper critical field (Hc2~6T) measured at the same temperature (2.2K). For I||c, on the other hand, D decreases weakly with magnetic field but the broadening parameter (G) increases rapidly with magnetic field with the absence of any resolvable feature above 3.5T. From an analysis of the field variation of energy gaps and the zero bias density of states we show that the unconventional gap function observed in this material could originate from multiband superconductivity.Comment: 19 pages including figures (final version

    TP53-mutant pigs generated by zygote electroporation

    TP53 (which encodes p53) is one of the most frequently mutated genes in cancers. In this study, we generated TP53-mutant pigs by gene editing via electroporation of the Cas9 protein (GEEP), a process that involves introducing the Cas9 protein and single-guide RNA (sgRNA) targeting exon 3 and intron 4 of TP53 into in vitro-fertilized zygotes. Zygotes modified by the sgRNAs were transferred to recipients, two of which gave birth to a total of 11 piglets. Of those 11 piglets, 9 survived. Molecular genetic analysis confirmed that 6 of 9 live piglets carried mutations in TP53, including 2 piglets with no wild-type (WT) sequences and 4 genetically mosaic piglets with WT sequences. One mosaic piglet had 142 and 151 bp deletions caused by a combination of the two sgRNAs. These piglets were continually monitored for 16 months and three of the genome-edited pigs (50%) exhibited various tumor phenotypes that we presumed were caused by TP53 mutations. Two mutant pigs with no WT sequences developed mandibular osteosarcoma and nephroblastoma. The mosaic pig with a deletion between targeting sites of two sgRNAs exhibited malignant fibrous histiocytoma. Tumor phenotypes of TP53 mosaic mutant pigs have not been previously reported. Our results indicated that the mutations caused by gene editing successfully induced tumor phenotypes in both TP53 mosaic- and bi-allelic mutant pigs

    Quasi-Classical Calculation of the Mixed-State Thermal Conductivity in s-Wave and d-Wave Superconductors

    To see how superconducting gap structures affect the longitudinal component of mixed-state thermal conductivity kappa_{xx}(B), the magnetic-field dependences of kappa_{xx}(B) in s-wave and d-wave superconductors are investigated. Calculations are performed on the basis of the quasi-classical theory of superconductivity by fully taking account of the spatial variation of the normal Green's function, neglected in previous works, by the Brandt-Pesch-Tewordt approximation. On the basis of our result, we discuss the possibility of kappa_{xx}(B) measurement as a method of probing the gap structure.Comment: To appear in J. Phys. Soc. Jp

    Upper critical field in dirty two-band superconductors: breakdown of the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau theory

    We investigate the upper critical field in a dirty two-band superconductor within quasiclassical Usadel equations. The regime of very high anisotropy in the quasi-2D band, relevant for MgB2_{2}, is considered. We show that strong disparities in pairing interactions and diffusion constant anisotropies for two bands influence the in-plane Hc2H_{c2} in a different way at high and low temperatures. This causes temperature-dependent Hc2H_{c2} anisotropy, in accordance with recent experimental data in MgB2_{2}. The three-dimensional band most strongly influences the in-plane Hc2H_{c2} near TcT_{c}, in the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) region. However, due to a very large difference between the c-axis coherence lengths in the two bands, the GL theory is applicable only in an extremely narrow temperature range near TcT_c. The angular dependence of Hc2H_{c2} deviates from a simple effective-mass law even near TcT_c.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys.Rev.

    Gene profiling of the erythro- and megakaryoblastic leukaemias induced by the Graffi murine retrovirus

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Acute erythro- and megakaryoblastic leukaemias are associated with very poor prognoses and the mechanism of blastic transformation is insufficiently elucidated. The murine Graffi leukaemia retrovirus induces erythro- and megakaryoblastic leukaemias when inoculated into NFS mice and represents a good model to study these leukaemias.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>To expand our understanding of genes specific to these leukaemias, we compared gene expression profiles, measured by microarray and RT-PCR, of all leukaemia types induced by this virus.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The transcriptome level changes, present between the different leukaemias, led to the identification of specific cancerous signatures. We reported numerous genes that may be potential oncogenes, may have a function related to erythropoiesis or megakaryopoiesis or have a poorly elucidated physiological role. The expression pattern of these genes has been further tested by RT-PCR in different samples, in a Friend erythroleukaemic model and in human leukaemic cell lines.</p> <p>We also screened the megakaryoblastic leukaemias for viral integrations and identified genes targeted by these integrations and potentially implicated in the onset of the disease.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Taken as a whole, the data obtained from this global gene profiling experiment have provided a detailed characterization of Graffi virus induced erythro- and megakaryoblastic leukaemias with many genes reported specific to the transcriptome of these leukaemias for the first time.</p
