On the origin of the various types of radio emission in GRS 1915+105
We investigate the association between the radio ``plateau'' states and the
large superluminal flares in GRS 1915+105 and propose a qualitative scenario to
explain this association. We identify several candidate superluminal flare
events from available monitoring data on this source and analyze the
contemporaneous RXTE pointed observations. We detect a strong correlation
between the average X-ray flux during the ``plateau'' state and the total
energy emitted in radio during the subsequent radio flare. We find that the
sequence of events is similar for all large radio flares with a fast rise and
exponential decay morphology. Based on these results, we propose a qualitative
scenario in which the separating ejecta during the superluminal flares are
observed due to the interaction of the matter blob ejected during the X-ray
soft dips, with the steady jet already established during the ``plateau''
state. This picture can explain all types of radio emission observed from this
source in terms of its X-ray emission characteristics.Comment: Corrected typo in the author names, contents unchanged, accepted in

Cascaded Fuzzy Inference System for Overall Equipment Effectiveness of a Manufacturing Process
Overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) is one of the widely accepted performance evaluation methods most commonly employed for measuring the efficiency of a manufacturing process in a manufacturing industry. It plays a most prominent role in improving the efficiency of a manufacturing process which in turn ensures quality, consistency and productivity. The OEE parameters, availability, performance and quality are not single parameters. But these parameters in turn depend on several other parameters which introduce a cascaded effect in OEE computation. The variation in the value of lowest level parameters propagate to the higher levels making the OEE computation a complex process. To cater such situations, in this paper authors propose cascaded fuzzy inference system for measurement of Overall Equipment Effectiveness. In the simplified model proposed by the authors, only few prominent parameters up to two levels are considered. The model can be easily extended to incorporate more parameters and more levels to render it more realistic
Noise thermometry and electron thermometry of a sample-on-cantilever system below 1 Kelvin
We have used two types of thermometry to study thermal fluctuations in a
microcantilever-based system below 1 K. We measured the temperature of a
cantilever's macroscopic degree-of-freedom (via the Brownian motion of its
lowest flexural mode) and its microscopic degrees-of-freedom (via the electron
temperature of a metal sample mounted on the cantilever). We also measured both
temperatures' response to a localized heat source. We find it possible to
maintain thermal equilibrium between these two temperatures and a refrigerator
down to at least 300 mK. These results are promising for ongoing experiments to
probe quantum effects using micromechanical devices

Interface structure and surface morphology of (Co, Fe, Ni)/Cu/Si(100) thin films
We have examined bilayer Co/Cu, Fe/Cu, and Ni/Cu films deposited by molecularâbeam epitaxy on hydrogenâterminated [100] silicon substrates. The magnetic metal/copper interface was examined by atomic resolution transmission electron microscopy and compared with the surface morphology as depicted by atomic force microscopy. The general orientation relationships across the magnetic metal/copper interfaces were found to be: [001]Co, Niâ„[001]Cu; (010)Co, Niâ„(010)Cu and [001]Feâ„[001]Cu; (110)Feâ„(200)Cu. The latter system is equivalent to the [11â1]Feâ„[011]Cu and (110)Feâ„(100)Cu Pitsch relationship, as has been reported earlier. Furthermore, there was a general correlation between interfacial and surface roughness, indicating that the initial interface character is propagated throughout the film during growth. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/71022/2/JAPIAU-80-9-5035-1.pd
What is Information Worth for an Extra Quintal of Grain?: Randomised Experimental Evidence from Farmers in India
This study evaluates whether access to real-time customised idiosyncratic
agricultural information over extended seasons improves the value of such
information among farmers. We conduct a controlled randomised experiment in
the Indian state of Karnataka. The study employs the difference-in-difference
method to a panel of households comparing the differential valuation of
information during the post-intervention period between treatment (participant)
and control (non-participant) farmers relative to the outcomes observed during a
pre-intervention period. We find robust evidence of the intervention showing
significantly positive impacts on the valuation of agricultural information among
treatment farmers relative to the control farmers. A difference of each one unit
improvement in information access is found to be associated with 53 percent
average increase in the mean valuation of the information. The result indicates
that farmers value information that is comprehensive, reliable, real-time and
idiosyncratic as opposed to the more generic or piecemeal information
