    Three aspects of rock mechanics, namely, in-situ stress estimation by acoustic emission (AB) method, strength of rock mass and role of chemicals to reduce the strength are covered. It i:s possible to detect the previously applied maximum stress by stressing a rock specimen to the point where there is a substantial increase in AB activity .This is known as Kaiser effect. From the AB signatures in the second and subsequent loading.s, AB take-off point was identified more easily than in the fIrst loading. In determining the compressive strength of rock mass, two factors have to be considered, namely, the size effect on the compressive strength of intact rock and the effect of dis,continuities on the compressive strength of rock mass. Although a modified Bieniawski criterion gives best agreement \u27 .ith the triaxial test data, modifications have been suggested to Hoek-Brown criterion due to its popularity. It is po~;sible to reduce the tensile strength of sandstone by saturating it with weak chemical solutions made with dodecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide, polyethylene oxide and aluminium chloride by up to 30%. In the case of compressive strength, there is no appreciable effect. The possible explanation is that the chemical solutions produce an effect on the strength of sandstone only when the failure mechanism is dominated by tensile mode

    Long-term stability test of a triple GEM detector

    The main aim of the study is to perform the long-term stability test of gain of the single mask triple GEM detector. A simple method is used for this long- term stability test using a radioactive X-ray source with high activity. The test is continued till accumulation of charge per unit area > 12.0 mC/mm2. The details of the chamber fabrication, the test set-up, the method of measurement and the test results are presented in this paper.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

    Analytic Continuation for Asymptotically AdS 3D Gravity

    We have previously proposed that asymptotically AdS 3D wormholes and black holes can be analytically continued to the Euclidean signature. The analytic continuation procedure was described for non-rotating spacetimes, for which a plane t=0 of time symmetry exists. The resulting Euclidean manifolds turned out to be handlebodies whose boundary is the Schottky double of the geometry of the t=0 plane. In the present paper we generalize this analytic continuation map to the case of rotating wormholes. The Euclidean manifolds we obtain are quotients of the hyperbolic space by a certain quasi-Fuchsian group. The group is the Fenchel-Nielsen deformation of the group of the non-rotating spacetime. The angular velocity of an asymptotic region is shown to be related to the Fenchel-Nielsen twist. This solves the problem of classification of rotating black holes and wormholes in 2+1 dimensions: the spacetimes are parametrized by the moduli of the boundary of the corresponding Euclidean spaces. We also comment on the thermodynamics of the wormhole spacetimes.Comment: 28 pages, 14 figure

    In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, recombination events occurring between allelic genes located on homologous chromosomes are often associated with heteroduplex formation. We found that recombination events between repeated genes on nonhomologous chromosomes (ectopic events) are also associated with the formation of heteroduplexes, indicating that classical and ectopic recombination events involve similar mechanisms

    Cognitive predictors of word reading in Sinhala

    We examined whether akshara knowledge, phonological awareness, phonological memory, and RAN predict variability in word and nonword reading skills in Grade 1–4 children (N = 200) learning to read Sinhala. Hierarchical regression analyses showed that akshara knowledge had the strongest unique association with both word and nonword reading accuracy across grades. Akshara knowledge and RAN predicted word and nonword reading fluency. The impact of phonological memory and syllable awareness on reading was mostly mediated by akshara knowledge, and phoneme awareness was not uniquely associated with word reading skills in any grade. These results suggest that there are multiple cognitive correlates of accurate and fluent word reading in Sinhala, and akshara knowledge is the most important predictor of learning to read words. The findings have implications for the literacy acquisition, development, and instruction in alphasyllabaries
