Four combinations of various growing media i.e. garden soil, canal silt, farm yard manure,  mushroom compost,  leaf mold and  poultry manure and four irrigation intervals (i.e. 5, 10, 15 and 20 days) were  trailed to investigate their effects on growth and flowers production of Amaryllis belladonna, at Horticulture Nursery of University of Agriculture, Peshawar during 2012.Growing medium composed of garden soil, canal silt, and mushroom compost resulted in maximum number of flowers (5.42) per plant, length of flower stalk  (44.00 cm) and flower diameter (11.58 cm). While the medium composed of garden soil, canal silt, and leaf mold resulted in maximum flower persistency (7.58 days) whereas earlier flowering (43.50 days) was observed in amaryllis plants grown in the medium composed of garden soil, canal silt, and farm yard manure. Quick flowering (47.83 days), maximum flowers (4.50) per plant, flower stalk length (44.08 cm), flower diameter (11.67 cm), flower persistency (8.25 days) was noted at irrigation interval of 10 days. Since Mushroom compost growing media and 10 days irrigation interval interaction showed significant result among most of the parameters observed hence for better flower production growing media garden soil + canal silt + mushroom compost with 10 days irrigation interval is recommended. Keywords: Flower production, flower stalk length & diamete

    Get PDF
Abstract Objective: C-reactive protein (CRP) is an indicator of the inflammatory process in the body, and is associated with the pathogenesis of depression through its purported effect on neurotransmitter function in the brain. Current research aims to study the relationship between the levels of CRP and the rate of remission of major depressive disorder with first-line antidepressant therapy. Methods: This hospital-based prospective study included thirty patients by purposive sampling technique. Patients with first-episode MDD with no history of antidepressant exposure and other medical comorbidity were recruited for pharmacotherapy with escitalopram, a first-line antidepressant. Patients taking antidepressants, anti-inflammatory medicines, having co-morbid conditions or other psychiatric conditions were excluded. The baseline CRP levels were measured and depressive symptoms were evaluated using the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HRSD) at weeks 0, 6 and 12. The patients with low (≤5 mg/l) and high (>5 mg/l) CRP levels were compared for remission rates at week 12 using Kaplan–Meier survival analysis. Results: Amongst the 30 cases, 11(36.7%) were males and 19(63.3%) were female patients. The mean age was 35.95±7.85 years. Both groups were matched concerning age, gender, BMI and baseline HRSD score (p>0.05). As per Kaplan–Meier survival analysis, a significantly higher proportion of patients had remission of MDD at the 12th week having CRP levels ≤5 mg/l than the patients with CRP levels >5 mg/dl (p=0.002). Conclusion: This research concluded that after an adequate trial with a standard antidepressant, higher levels of CRP could lead to poorer remission rates in MDD subjects and could represent a sub-group of patients with treatment resistance

Background: Safe and healthy drinking water is inaccessible to more than 20% of the world population. Among some major risks to safety of potable water, contamination with pathogenic microorganisms is the most alarming and harmful Therefore, it is needed to develop and implement fast and accurate methods for the detection of bacterial contamination in water. Methods: Biological analysis of drinking water samples obtained from nine different collection points of Lahore city was carried out and total of six different bacterial strains were isolated. Biochemical characterization was done under standard laboratory conditions. Molecular identification of these isolates was done by using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis. Results: The drinking water sample collected from Punjab University showed highest bacterial count 1066/0.5 ml of drinking water while residential area of University of the Punjab contained least number of bacterial counts i.e., 38/0.5 ml of drinking water. Amplification patterns of isolates SZ1, SZ3, SZ4 and SZ6 obtained by RAPD were found similar to genus Bacillus. While, SZ2 and SZ5 had unique amplification patterns identical to Bacillus megaterium. All the six bacterial strains were tested for the presence of protease, lipase, cellulase, and amylase. Strain SZ2 gave positive result for all of them except amylase. Conclusion: Tube well water of Punjab University area of Lahore is safe for drinking purpose except admin block tube. It is recommended to monitor the bacteriological load of drinking water at regular intervals in order to control water borne bacterial diseases

    Get PDF
