In order to understand core team's management task this paper studies the landscape of the decision making of the construction project core team. This paper uses multi-ontology sense making framework developed by Snowden. The four described situation illustrate the use of this framework. Firstly, a project core team create a project plan –timetable and cost estimate, that is supposed to be followed (rules and order) when making investment decision. Secondly, a project core team uses the plan but since the plan cannot be followed due to an unexpected situation the team changes the plan by calculating an optimal solution. In other words the team uses heuristic thinking when they change the rule (heuristics and order). Thirdly, the design group guides the design process by rules to get information for designing new facilities (rules and un-order). Fourthly, there are situations when the stakeholders have different kind of opinions in crisis and team cannot follow the preset orderly way of working (heuristics and un-order).© 2015 The Authors. Though almost all the organizations of the current era espouse innovation and creativity, but still there is strong practical presence of management models supporting the concepts like maximization, equilibrium and rationality, the highlights of Anglo-Saxon capitalism in management thinking practices. This paper discusses the reasons for validating change in the management thinking approaches to harness organizational transformation for innovation and sustainability. The paper illustrates key stand points to explain why few organizations still support their obsolete management practices even in the current intelligently vibrant and technologically competitive times. In order to create space for innovation and creativity to grow within the organizations, this paper justifies the benefits of having T- style thinkers on-board for greater corporate effectiveness. Communication and close networking among the separate departmental units as well as among the core competencies are found to be fundamental to achieve innovative solutions for effective organizational change through the support of T- style thinking.©2015 Published by Elsevier Ltd. The development of successful new products is today of challenge to most consumer product companies. They have to short their response time, pushing their development processes to move faster while keeping on competitive prices and quality. These caused companies are forced to find effective and innovative approaches as work methods to overcome to pressures. Concurrent Engineering (CE) is one of the approaches to address these managerial and manufacturing dilemmas in new product projects. The basic premise of CE revolves around team working. However, most of the managers especially project managers face with problems when they want to promote teamwork culture, especially in conditions that the project faces with complicated problems. In this condition, a creative team consists of members from different levels of the organizational hierarchy must be shaped. There are always barriers in group meetings that influence growth and diffusion of creative solutions and would be reduced by using creativity and innovation techniques. The first purpose of this study is to identify the effective criteria in success of creative meetings in CE projects. Next, the prioritization of each factor has been analyzed and ranked respectively. Finally, based on the results of previous research of the authors, the useful group creativity and innovation techniques related with team work meetings in CE projects have been ranked by using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) approach.©2012 the Authors. Evaluation of renewable energy development in power generation in Finland

    Get PDF
Renewable energy resources have historically played an important role for heat/electricity generation in Finland. Although diffusion costs of renewable energy utilization are higher than fossil fuels and nuclear power plants, other policy aspects and operation costs of renewables cover this gap particularly in high dependent countries to fossil fuels. The current paper discusses the role of renewable portfolio in the Finland's energy action plan during 2011–2020. A system dynamics model is constructed to evaluate different costs of renewable energy utilization by 2020. Results show that total costs of new capacities of renewable energy systems as well as operation and maintenance costs of current systems bring 7% saving compared to total costs of new natural gas power plants (as a sample for second scenario) in Finland.©2013 AIP Publishing LCC. Application of creativity techniques in the creation of organizational strategies

    Get PDF
The majority of studies in the field of organizational strategies have concentrated on strategy formulation, distinct from strategy implementation. Disunion of these two processes often leads to disappointing results in the implementation of strategy. In such a condition, the creation of a suitable strategy in a way that could resolve the divergence of formulation from implementation is suggested by researchers. This means that the implementers of a strategy turn into the formulators. Therefore, presenting creative ideas and solutions is encouraged between related organizational staff at different levels. Noting that the possibility of emerging creative ideas in organizational meetings between persons from different organizational levels is low, fostering creativity and innovation techniques can be an ideal solution for successful group meetings. In this paper, after introducing the effective criteria that should be considered in the creation of collective action strategies in organizations, the suitable techniques for fostering creativity in this kind of meeting will be ranked based on the Fuzzy MADM approach.©2012 the Authors, licensee InTech. Transformational leadership is known to offer the crucial wish list well suited for the organizations that are transitioning towards innovation and creativity. It is therefore the combination of significant traits that holds the ‘Pied pipers effect́ for the transformational leadership which makes it more potent than that of the routine managerial work to cope with the organizational transformational processes. The findings of the case study suggests that a successful transformational organizational process requires change leaders (i.e., Managers or the change implementers) to install within themselves the sets of appropriate skills and attributes that are characteristic to the so-called transformational leaders, to enforce innovation and creativity through effective organizational change management process. An additional contribution of the paper is to highlight the similarity between the transformational leadership's impact on the work teams with the character of Pied Piper of Hamelin from a children's story.©2015 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
