This research studies environmental ethics and sustainability with a focus on sustainable ethics and strategies introduced in traditional Korean building design. It explores how renewable principles and materials were used in such a way that harmonizes the man-made with the natural environments. The paper argues that it is imperative to view environmental ethics as a universal value and traditional Korean building design may provide some valuable lessons

Influence of American Media upon Korean Broadcasting Culture - Analyzing \u27American Idol\u27 vs. \u27SuperStar K II\u27

This study examines the influence of American media on Korean broadcasting culture, based on analysis of American Idol and SuperStar K Season II. Viewer ratings were analyzed to find out the popularity of American programs in South Korea. Web-based surveys and individual interviews were analyzed to figure out the difference between both programs and its influence upon Korean viewers. The result shows that American programs currently influence the Korean media and Korean viewers, and that influence is getting more produced. With those findings, the study concludes it affects Korean viewers and Korean society as well. Audition programs become one of the strongest trends in Korean society through SuperStar K Season II, and it gives hope to people who display a growing confidence in what they really want to do with their professional lives

Self-Compassion and Depression Across Culture: Comparisons of Emerging Adults in China and the United States

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is one of the most common mood disorders and affects over 300 million individuals across the world in a given year. MDD is marked by sadness, loss of pleasure or interest, feelings of guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite, fatigue or loss of energy, and poor concentration that leads to functional impairment, which can potentially have a debilitating impact on individual’s educational, occupational, social and psychological areas of life. Not only is depression highly prevalent in the U.S., but it is also a global concern, including countries such as China. Estimates of lifetime prevalence rates range from 32.6 to 35.1 million in the US and 54 to 100 million in China, respectively. A growing literature shows that self-compassion is a strong protective factor for depression. Self-compassion is a process of mindfully accepting oneself by reducing self-criticism and examining one’s experiences from a broader perspective. The values behind self-compassion are rooted in Asian cultural teachings. A small but growing body of work suggests that self-compassion outcomes may differ across non-Western and Western cultures. However, the effect of cultural background on the relationship between self-compassion and depression remains unknown; therefore, more research is needed to be done in cross-cultural domains. The current proposed project further seeks to understand the role of self-compassion in depression among both American and Chinese populations. This study also aims to understand whether cultural components moderate the relationship between self-compassion and depression

Ocular comorbidities in neonatal abstinence syndrome

Chronic opioid exposure in utero places the infant at risk of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS), a clinical diagnosis of neurological, autonomic, and/or gastrointestinal withdrawal symptoms from opioid abstinence at birth. The prevalence of NAS is rising concurrently with the recent epidemic of opioid misuse among the general population in the United States, including pregnant women. Opioid misusing women typically receive methadone or buprenorphine as a treatment throughout pregnancy. However, the opioid misuse during pregnancy is associated with higher obstetric complications and a higher incidence of NAS in infants, at times requiring pharmacological intervention. The exact consequences to the human development from opioid exposure in utero remain unclear. Animal studies suggest that the fetal impacts of opioid exposure may differ from the consequences for an adult who uses opioids. Furthermore, there may be neurodevelopmental alterations in myelin physiology, dendritic length in the brain, and neurotransmitter systems when a child is exposed to opioids in utero. Clinical studies highlight associations between perinatal opioid exposure and gene mutation variants, cranial abnormalities on imaging, and a high prevalence of ocular and visual comorbidities. Ocular and visual comorbidities are of particular interest, because they may be treatable when detected early. The current literature about NAS infants and ocular and visual comorbidities is limited by the retrospective and small case-control study designs employed by the majority of the research groups. The proposed study design is a prospective study comparing groups of opioid exposed and non-opioid exposed infants born at Boston Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. The ocular and visual comorbidities detected in each group will be quantified, while analyzing the relationship and the relative risk attributable to the infant’s and mother’s demographics. The social context of opioid misuse may complicate the interpretation of the data; however, the design anticipates sufficient recruitment and generalizability as it is conducted at a safety net hospital. Ultimately, the goal of this proposal is to reduce the risk to the fetus with perinatal opioid exposure and build the knowledge base about ocular comorbidities in NAS infants so that optimal and comprehensive care can be provided in the future

Part of Speech Tagging Guidelines for Penn Korean Treebank

This document describes the Part-of-Speech (POS) tagging guidelines for the Penn Korean Treebank Project. The corpus used for this project consists of around 54,000 words and 5,000 sentences. This document starts with a summary of the tagset used in the Penn Korean Treebank, followed by a more detailed discussion of each tag with examples. Then pairs of tags that are easily confused with each other are discussed and guidelines on how to distinguish one from the other for a given base forms and inflections are presented. The document concludes with a list of specific problematic examples with guidelines on how to handle such cases
