Comparative studies of Owen Jones and Christopher Alexander Related to Pattern Design and Cultural Knowledge
Owen Jones and Christopher Alexander are two architects
who explored design in different years, so their perspective and
exploration in patterns design are distinctive. The comparative
analysis between these two architects will start from the different
standpoint of āpatternā definition introduced by each architect
and continue with a description about the way that the theories
of each architect relates to the classification of pattern design and
cultural knowledge.

Critique of Multicultural Perspectives
Bryan Fay published a book titled "Contemporary Philosophy of Social Science: A
Multicultural Approach," in 1996. His mainly argue, "a dualistic ways of thinking [which]
predominates [...] the philosophy of social science." (Pg. 223). Fay developed a new way
to approach the philosophy of social science called multiculturalism. There is a growing
development of social science in a multicultural approach, and Fay's premises contributed
to the Multicultural Philosophy of Social Science. This essay will elaborate Fay's
dialectical view and how multicultural approach should find a synergy and understanding,
moreover, it also explains the incomplete statement of Fay by describing example and the
writer own experience
Contemporary Issues in Architecture and Design
Architecture develops an extensive history from the establishment of
civilization. In the beginning, humans need shelter as protection from sun, rain, animals
and nature; shelter was the simplest temporary construction at that time. Since humans
started inserting permanent settlements, development of architecture has been started.
A slow and gradual process required deep understanding of thought in knowledge and
practice of architectural field. Accordingly, these theories and practices enhance
architecture to be learned into academic curriculum. In this paper, the author will
deliberate the overview of architecture disciplines
Review of Studies in Pattern Analysis
Understanding perspective from the artisans is the unique approach in this study since most of the
studies in pattern analysis and classification ignore the individuals or artisans who design and
create the patterns. Most of the research about pattern analysis has been conducted by surveying
the patterns or collecting the data from the reliable sources without trying to engage with the
artisans and understand their culture and worldview. The pattern analysis that does not take into
consideration the creatorsā perspectives will be misguided, since it proceeds from the researcherās
limited interpretation of the patterns, without any regard for the context in which the patterns were
created and appreciated

CRITIQUE OF METHOD IN SOCIAL SCIENCE
Science as a knowledge has two main parts, those are social science and natural
science. Natural science has precise measurement of an object while social science as
a science of person or group or collective behavior is uneasy to measure, thus it made
many outsiders felt doubt in social scientism. Sayer through the book of āMethod in
Social Scienceā attempts to reveal hesitation from outsiders by showing some reflection
in social science knowledge, since these two main sciences has interdependencies
within each other. In this paper, author will examine the content of the book concerning
method in social science

DESING METHOD IN TRACING KNOWN DESIGN: KEKETUSAN BALINESE ORNAMENTATION
Abstract. There are three different categories of ornamentation in Ba-
linese traditional building, keketusan, pepatran, and kekarangan, all
used as decorative patterns for centuries and is a cultural legacy. This
study focuses on the Keketusan group of patterns, and concentrates on
analysis of four patterns under keketusan group: kakul-kakulan, kup-
ing guling, mas-masan, and batun timun. This study borrows the prin-
ciple of symmetry analysis and shape grammar, in an attempt to sys-
tematically define the cultural legacy present in the keketusan pattern.
A chart developed by Washburn and Crowe is used to define sym-
metry principle and then is used to determine the shape grammar of a
pattern that consists of initial shape and spatial relations or rules.
Keywords. Shape grammar; keketusan; symmetry analysis; initial
shape; rule
THE IMPROVEMENT OF ENDEK WEAVING PATTERN DESIGN WITH DIGITAL APPLICATION AT PERTENUNAN ASTITI IN BALI THROUGH A STRUCTURED TRAINING
An improvement and enhancement of Endek weaving pattern design are essential. Particularly
with a condition where Endek weaving currently is entering the consumer market. The center
weaving place and weavers are expected to produce Endek weaving textiles with creative pat-
terns in a shorter period of time compared to previous one. Therefore, digital apps become a
solution for the weavers. In addition to that, training is required in order (1) to teach the dig-
ital app to the weavers, pattern makers, and young generations who have a passion for Endek
weaving textiles, and (2) to educate the users on how to translate the pattern designs into the
calculation of the weft threads āthe pattern in Endek is created on the weft threads. This train-
ing is divided into two sessions, where the first session is reserved for the public and the second
session is reserved for the weavers and pattern makers. At the end of the session, the partici-
pants are expected to master designing patterns through the digital application. This training is
not only focusing on the weavers but also public or young generations in order to preserve the
culture in weaving Endek, especially in the design process.
