Kinematic sensitivity to the Fierz term of -decay differential spectra
The current most stringent constraints on exotic scalar or tensor couplings
in neutron and nuclear decay, involving left-handed neutrinos, are
obtained from the Fierz interference term. The sensitivity to this term in a
correlation coefficient is usually driven by an energy-averaged kinematic
factor that increases monotonically toward smaller values of the
endpoint energies. We first point out here that this property does not hold for
certain differential observables that are directly sensitive to the Fierz term,
such as the or the recoil energy spectrum. This observation is relevant
for the selection of sensitive transitions in searches for exotic couplings
through spectrum shape measurements. We then point out previous errors in the
exploitation of measurements of the angular correlation coefficient
and discuss their impact on the extraction of constraints on exotic couplings.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
Charge-state distribution of Li ions from the decay of laser-trapped He atoms
Background: The accurate determination of atomic final states following
nuclear decay plays an important role in many experiments. In
particular, the charge state distributions of ions following nuclear
decay are important for determinations of the angular correlation
with improved precision. Purpose: Our measurement aims at providing benchmarks
to test theoretical calculations. Method: The kinematics of Li ions
produced following the decay of within an electric field
were measured using atoms in the metastable and
in the states confined by a magneto-optical trap. The
electron shake-off probabilities were deduced including their dependence on ion
energy. Results: We find significant discrepancies on the fractions of Li ions
in the different charge states with respect to a recent calculation and discuss
a plausible explanation. We also point out that there is no explanation for a
large discrepancy between the same calculation and a previous measurement of
the Li-ion energy dependence of the charge distribution from decays of the
electronic ground state
Measurement of the Li8 half-life
We report a new measurement of the Li8 half-life using a plastic scintillator and an ultrafast waveform digitizing module. The result, T1/2=(838.40±0.36)ms, improves by a factor of 2.5 the most precise result obtained so far and is furthermore deduced with negligible corrections due to dead time.

La transmission du sytème sans analyseurs est de 50%.This thesis was performed in the context of a project aiming to measure the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the neutron at the Paul Scherrer Institute. Two aspects have been studied: The detection and the polarization analysis of ulracold neutrons. Three types of detectors have been tested at the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL): The cascade-U (GEM technology), the 3He gas detector and 6Li-doped glass scintillators (GS family). Their detection efficiency and their background sensitivity have been measured. The GS10 scintillator is competitive with the 3He gas detector under the conditions realized with the EDM spectrometer. A GS3/GS20 scintillator stack has enabled to improve the neutron/gamma discrimination. It has been found 20% less efficient than the 3He gas detector under the EDM spectrometer. The cascade-detector has been observed to be 20% less efficient than a 500 m thick GS10 glass as confirmed by simulations. A new system for simultaneous spin analysis is presented. It consists of two independent detection systems (arms) which are each made of an adiabatic spin flipper, a spin analyzer, and a detector. The arms detect opposite spin components, allowing the simultaneous counting of both neutron spin orientations. A prototype mounted in horizontal configuration has been tested at ILL. The analyzing power of both arms has been measured to be 80%. The transmission of the system without spin analyzers has been found to be 50%.CAEN-BU Sciences et STAPS (141182103) / SudocSudocFranceF
The subject of this work is the data analysis of the LPCTrap experiment which occurred in 2008. The goal was to measure the b- angular correlation coefficient, ab , in the 6He decay at a 0.5% precision level. Evidences of a discrepancy between the experimental value of ab and the prediction of the Standard Model (SM) would mean the existence of a vector current in the weak decay of 6He. This discovery would question the V-A structure used to describe the weak interaction in the SM. A Paul trap is used to confine 6He+ ions almost at rest in a very small volume in order to have a decay source as well defined as possible. The emitted b particle and 6Li++ ion are detected in coincidence by detectors located around the trap. ab is determined from a comparison between the experimental and a Monte-Carlo simulated distributions of the time of flight of the recoiling ions. During this work, a simulation based on GEANT4 has been developed, taking into account all the experimental effects which are likely to contribute to the systematic error of the ab estimation. A special focus has been put on the electron scattering modelling. Despite a sufficient experimental statistics and an efficient simulation, a correct estimation was not achieved due to a malfunction of the ion detector. An exploratory statistical study has been undertaken in order to accurately specify the sensitivity level of the measurement performed with the LPCTrap apparatus in testing the hypotheses of the SM. The tools developed in this work will be used to analyze future experiments.CAEN-BU Sciences et STAPS (141182103) / SudocSudocFranceF
