Rabbits, buzzards and hares. Two studies on the indirect effects of myxomatosis

The phase-space structure of a dark-matter halo: Implications for dark-matter direct detection experiments
We study the phase-space structure of a dark-matter halo formed in a high
resolution simulation of a Lambda CDM cosmology. Our goal is to quantify how
much substructure is left over from the inhomogeneous growth of the halo, and
how it may affect the signal in experiments aimed at detecting the dark matter
particles directly. If we focus on the equivalent of ``Solar vicinity'', we
find that the dark-matter is smoothly distributed in space. The probability of
detecting particles bound within dense lumps of individual mass less than 10^7
M_\sun h^{-1} is small, less than 10^{-2}. The velocity ellipsoid in the Solar
neighbourhood deviates only slightly from a multivariate Gaussian, and can be
thought of as a superposition of thousands of kinematically cold streams. The
motions of the most energetic particles are, however, strongly clumped and
highly anisotropic. We conclude that experiments may safely assume a smooth
multivariate Gaussian distribution to represent the kinematics of dark-matter
particles in the Solar neighbourhood. Experiments sensitive to the direction of
motion of the incident particles could exploit the expected anisotropy to learn

Indirect search for dark matter: prospects for GLAST
Possible indirect detection of neutralino, through its gamma-ray annihilation
product, by the forthcoming GLAST satellite from our galactic halo, M31, M87
and the dwarf galaxies Draco and Sagittarius is studied. Gamma-ray fluxes are
evaluated for the two representative energy thresholds, 0.1 GeV and 1.0 GeV, at
which the spatial resolution of GLAST varies considerably. Apart from dwarfs
which are described either by a modified Plummer profile or by a
tidally-truncated King profiles, fluxes are compared for halos with central
cusps and cores. It is demonstrated that substructures, irrespective of their
profiles, enhance the gamma-ray emission only marginally. The expected
gamma-ray intensity above 1 GeV at high galactic latitudes is consistent with
the residual emission derived from EGRET data if the density profile has a
central core and the neutralino mass is less than 50 GeV, whereas for a central
cusp only a substantial enhancement would explain the observations. From M31,
the flux can be detected above 0.1 GeV and 1.0 GeV by GLAST only if the
neutralino mass is below 300 GeV and if the density profile has a central cusp,
case in which a significant boost in the gamma-ray emission is produced by the
central black hole. For Sagittarius, the flux above 0.1 GeV is detectable by
GLAST provided the neutralino mass is below 50 GeV. From M87 and Draco the

Effect of halo modelling on WIMP exclusion limits
WIMP direct detection experiments are just reaching the sensitivity required
to detect galactic dark matter in the form of neutralinos. Data from these
experiments are usually analysed under the simplifying assumption that the
Milky Way halo is an isothermal sphere with maxwellian velocity distribution.
Observations and numerical simulations indicate that galaxy halos are in fact
triaxial and anisotropic. Furthermore, in the cold dark matter paradigm
galactic halos form via the merger of smaller subhalos, and at least some
residual substructure survives. We examine the effect of halo modelling on WIMP
exclusion limits, taking into account the detector response. Triaxial and
anisotropic halo models, with parameters motivated by observations and
numerical simulations, lead to significant changes which are different for
different experiments, while if the local WIMP distribution is dominated by
small scale clumps then the exclusion limits are changed dramatically.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, version to appear in Phys. Rev. D, minor change
Gamma rays from dark matter annihilation in the Draco and observability at ARGO
The CACTUS experiment recently observed a gamma ray excess above 50 GeV from
the direction of the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Considering that Draco is
dark matter dominated the gamma rays may be generated through dark matter
annihilation in the Draco halo. In the framework of the minimal supersymmetric
extension of the standard model we explore the parameter space to account for
the gamma ray signals at CACTUS. We find that the neutralino mass is
constrained to be approximately in the range between 100 GeV ~ 400 GeV and a
sharp central cuspy of the dark halo profile in Draco is necessary to explain
the CACTUS results. We then discuss further constraints on the supersymmetric
parameter space by observations at the ground based ARGO detector. It is found
that the parameter space can be strongly constrained by ARGO if no excess from
Draco is observed above 100 GeV.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure
Substructures in lens galaxies: PG1115+080 and B1555+375, two fold configurations
We study the anomalous flux ratio which is observed in some four-image lens
systems, where the source lies close to a fold caustic. In this case two of the
images are close to the critical curve and their flux ratio should be equal to
unity, instead in several cases the observed value differs significantly. The
most plausible solution is to invoke the presence of substructures, as for
instance predicted by the Cold Dark Matter scenario, located near the two
images. In particular, we analyze the two fold lens systems PG1115+080 and
B1555+375, for which there are not yet satisfactory models which explain the
observed anomalous flux ratios. We add to a smooth lens model, which reproduces
well the positions of the images but not the anomalous fluxes, one or two
substructures described as singular isothermal spheres. For PG1115+080 we
consider a smooth model with the influence of the group of galaxies described
by a SIS and a substructure with mass as well as a
smooth model with an external shear and one substructure with mass . For B1555+375 either a strong external shear or two substructures

The SmartTarget BIOPSY trial: A prospective, within-person randomised, blinded trial comparing the accuracy of visual-registration and MRI/ultrasound image-fusion targeted biopsies for prostate cancer risk stratification
Background: Multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI)-targeted prostate biopsies can improve detection of clinically significant prostate cancer and decrease the overdetection of insignificant cancers. Whether visual-registration targeting is sufficient or if augmentation with image-fusion software is needed is unknown.
Objective: To assess concordance between the two methods.
Design, Setting, and Participants: We conducted a blinded, within-person randomised, paired validating clinical trial. From 2014 to 2016, 141 men who had undergone a prior (positive or negative) transrectal ultrasound biopsy and had a discrete lesion on mpMRI (score 3 to 5) requiring targeted transperineal biopsy were enrolled at a UK academic hospital; 129 underwent both biopsy strategies and completed the study.
Intervention: The order of performing biopsies using visual-registration and a computer-assisted MRI/ultrasound image-fusion system (SmartTarget) on each patient was randomised. The equipment was reset between biopsy strategies to mitigate incorporation bias.
Outcome Measurements and Statistical Analysis: The proportion of clinically significant prostate cancer (primary outcome: Gleason pattern ≥3+4=7, maximum cancer core length ≥4 mm; secondary outcome: Gleason pattern ≥4+3=7, maximum cancer core length ≥6 mm) detected by each method was compared using McNemar's test of paired proportions.
Results and Limitations: The two strategies combined detected 93 clinically significant prostate cancers (72% of the cohort). Each strategy individually detected 80/93 (86%) of these cancers; each strategy detected 13 cases missed by the other. Three patients experienced adverse events related to biopsy (urinary retention, urinary tract infection, nausea and vomiting). No difference in urinary symptoms, erectile function, or quality of life between baseline and follow-up (median 10.5 weeks) was observed. The key limitation was lack of parallel-group randomisation and limit on number of targeted cores.
Conclusions: Visual-registration and image-fusion targeting strategies combined had the highest detection rate for clinically significant cancers. Targeted prostate biopsy should be performed using both strategies together.
Patient Summary: We compared two prostate cancer biopsy strategies: visual-registration and image-fusion. The combination of the two strategies found the most clinically important cancers and should be used together whenever targeted biopsy is being performed
The clustering of ultra-high energy cosmic rays and their sources
The sky distribution of cosmic rays with energies above the 'GZK cutoff'
holds important clues to their origin. The AGASA data, although consistent with
isotropy, shows evidence for small-angle clustering, and it has been argued
that such clusters are aligned with BL Lacertae objects, implicating these as
sources. It has also been suggested that clusters can arise if the cosmic rays
come from the decays of very massive relic particles in the Galactic halo, due
to the expected clumping of cold dark matter. We examine these claims and show

Diffuse inverse Compton and synchrotron emission from dark matter annihilations in galactic satellites
Annihilating dark matter particles produce roughly as much power in electrons
and positrons as in gamma ray photons. The charged particles lose essentially
all of their energy to inverse Compton and synchrotron processes in the
galactic environment. We discuss the diffuse signature of dark matter
annihilations in satellites of the Milky Way (which may be optically dark with
few or no stars), providing a tail of emission trailing the satellite in its
orbit. Inverse Compton processes provide X-rays and gamma rays, and synchrotron
emission at radio wavelengths might be seen. We discuss the possibility of
detecting these signals with current and future observations, in particular
EGRET and GLAST for the gamma rays.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figure
Chaos assisted tunnelling with cold atoms
In the context of quantum chaos, both theory and numerical analysis predict
large fluctuations of the tunnelling transition probabilities when irregular
dynamics is present at the classical level. We consider here the
non-dissipative quantum evolution of cold atoms trapped in a time-dependent
modulated periodic potential generated by two laser beams. We give some precise
guidelines for the observation of chaos assisted tunnelling between invariant
