    Influence of Composition of Plant Oils on Their Tribological Properties

    Sunflower, corn, rapeseed, olive, and linseed oils were used for investigation. Their fatty-acid compositions have been evaluated by gas chromatography. The tribological properties were determined with a four-ball machine. Flash and set points, static and dynamic viscosity of the oils were estimated by standard methods. The results of tests show that refined plant oils possess better tribotechnical properties than the base mineral oil without additives. It was found that their antiwear and bearing resistance properties correlate with the structure of fatty acids molecules. It is demonstrated that the activation of unsaturated bonds as a result of the triglycerides oxidation has a positive influence on friction due to tribopolymerization and film formation on the contact surfaces

    Polymer Tribology: Current State and Applications

    Polymer tribology is based on the analysis of abrasion, adhesion, and fatigue of polymer materials in a friction contact. The structural features of polymers provide a variety of tribological applications of basic polymers mostly as matrices and fillers of composite materials. Recently polymer nanocomposites are used for making components of various tribosystems. A short review of polymer materials for tribosystems is presented. The main results of studies in friction and wear of polymers are given. Formation of the real area of contact is evaluated when taking account of polymer viscoelasticity and the effects of temperature and load in the contact. Adhesion of polymers and its part in friction transfer is considered. Various aspects of friction and wear tests of polymer materials for estimation of their characteristics, prediction of service life in different operational conditions are discussed. Practical examples of applications of polymer composites and nanocomposites in various branches of industry are given

    There are many options for tribological applications of basic polymers primarily as matrices and fillers of compound material due to the structural peculiarities of polymers. The polymer materials for tribosystems and their processing technique are briefly described. It is shown that composites with thermoplastic matrix are effective antifriction materials just as composites with thermosetting matrix is basically used as brake materials. Information on tribological behavior of polymer-based materials is presented. Polymer nanocomposites made by mixing nanofillers with melted thermoplastics are considered. The use cases of polymer composites and nanocomposites in industry are described
