Complete bandgaps in one-dimensional left-handed periodic structures
Artificially fabricated structures with periodically modulated parameters
such as photonic crystals offer novel ways of controlling the flow of light due
to the existence of a range of forbidden frequencies associated with a photonic
bandgap. It is believed that modulation of the refractive index in all three
spatial dimensions is required to open a complete bandgap and prevent the
propagation of electromagnetic waves in all directions. Here we reveal that, in
a sharp contrast to what was known before and contrary to the accepted physical
intuition, a one-dimensional periodic structure containing the layers of
transparent left-handed (or negative-index) metamaterial can trap light in
three-dimensional space due to the existence of a complete bandgap.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
High-Dispersion Optical Spectra of Nearby Stars Younger Than The Sun
We present high-dispersion (R~16,000) optical (3900-8700 A) spectra of 390
stars obtained with the Palomar 60 inch telescope. The majority of stars
observed are part of the Spitzer Legacy Science Program "The Formation and
Evolution of Planetary Systems." Through detailed analysis we determine stellar
properties for this sample, including radial and rotational velocities, Li I
6708 and Ha equivalent widths, the chromospheric activity index R'_HK, and
temperature- and gravity-sensitive line ratios. Several spectroscopic binaries
are also identified. From our tabulations, we illustrate basic age- and
rotation-related correlations among measured indices. One novel result is that
Ca II chromospheric emission appears to saturate at vsini values above ~30
km/s, similar to the well established saturation of X-rays that originate in
the spatially separate coronal regions.Comment: 1 electronic table; published in the Astronomical Journa
Anomalous wave reflection from the interface of two strongly nonlinear granular media
Granular materials exhibit a strongly nonlinear behaviour affecting the
propagation of information in the medium. Dynamically self-organized strongly
nonlinear solitary waves are the main information carriers in granular chains.
Here we report the first experimental observation of the dramatic change of
reflectivity from the interface of two granular media triggered by a noncontact
magnetically induced initial precompression. It may be appropriate to name this
phenomenon the "acoustic diode" effect. Based on numerical simulations, we
explain this effect by the high gradient of particle velocity near the
interface.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figure
Structure characterization of hard sphere packings in amorphous and crystalline states
The channel size distribution in hard sphere systems, based on the local
neighbor correlation of four particle positions, is investigated for all volume
fractions up to jamming. For each particle, all three particle combinations of
neighbors define channels, which are relevant for the concept of caging. The
analysis of the channel size distribution is shown to be very useful in
distinguishing between gaseous, liquid, partially and fully crystallized, and
glassy (random) jammed states. A common microstructural feature of four
coplanar particles is observed in crystalline and glassy jammed states,
suggesting the presence of "hidden" two-dimensional order in three-dimensional
random close packings.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Viscoelasticity of two-layer-vesicles in solution
The dynamic shape relaxation of the two-layer-vesicle is calculated. In
additional to the undulation relaxation where the two bilayers move in the same
direction, the squeezing mode appears when the gap between the two bilayers is
small. At large gap, the inner vesicle relaxes much faster, whereas the slow
mode is mainly due to the outer layer relaxation. We have calculated the
viscoelasticity of the dilute two-layer-vesicle suspension. It is found that
for small gap, the applied shear drives the undulation mode strongly while the
slow squeezing mode is not much excited. In this limit the complex viscosity is
dominated by the fast mode contribution. On the other hand, the slow mode is
strongly driven by shear for larger gap. We have determined the crossover gap
which depends on the interaction between the two bilayers. For a series of
samples where the gap is changed systematically, it is possible to observe the
two amplitude switchings
Effective Interactions and Volume Energies in Charge-Stabilized Colloidal Suspensions
Charge-stabilized colloidal suspensions can be conveniently described by
formally reducing the macroion-microion mixture to an equivalent one-component
system of pseudo-particles. Within this scheme, the utility of a linear
response approximation for deriving effective interparticle interactions has
been demonstrated [M. J. Grimson and M. Silbert, Mol. Phys. 74, 397 (1991)].
Here the response approach is extended to suspensions of finite-sized macroions
and used to derive explicit expressions for (1) an effective electrostatic pair
interaction between pseudo-macroions and (2) an associated volume energy that
contributes to the total free energy. The derivation recovers precisely the
form of the DLVO screened-Coulomb effective pair interaction for spherical
macroions and makes manifest the important influence of the volume energy on
thermodynamic properties of deionized suspensions. Excluded volume corrections
are implicitly incorporated through a natural modification of the inverse
screening length. By including nonlinear response of counterions to macroions,
the theory may be generalized to systematically investigate effective many-body
interactions.Comment: 13 pages (J. Phys.: Condensed Matter, in press
How to create Alice string (half-quantum vortex) in a vector Bose-Einstein condensate
We suggest a procedure how to prepare the vortex with N=1/2 winding number --
the counterpart of the Alice string -- in a Bose--Einstein condensate with
hyperfine spin F=1. Other possible vortices in Bose-condensates are also
discussed.Comment: RevTex file, 3 pages, no figures, extended version submitted to JETP

Photonic crystals of coated metallic spheres
It is shown that simple face-centered-cubic (fcc) structures of both metallic
and coated metallic spheres are ideal candidates to achieve a tunable complete
photonic bandgap (CPBG) for optical wavelengths using currently available
experimental techniques. For coated microspheres with the coating width to
plasma wavelength ratio and the coating and host
refractive indices and , respectively, between 1 and 1.47, one can
always find a sphere radius such that the relative gap width (gap
width to the midgap frequency ratio) is larger than 5% and, in some cases,
can exceed 9%. Using different coatings and supporting liquids, the width
and midgap frequency of a CPBG can be tuned considerably.Comment: 14 pages, plain latex, 3 ps figures, to appear in Europhys. Lett. For

Lack of Mutual Respect in Relationship The Endangered Partner
Violence in a relationship and in a family setting has been
an issue of concern to various interest groups and professional organizations.
Of particular interest in this article is violence against women
in a relationship. While there is an abundance of knowledge on violence
against women in general, intimate or partner femicide seems to have
received less attention. Unfortunately, the incidence of violence against
women, and intimate femicide in particular, has been an issue of concern
in the African setting.
This article examines the trends of intimate femicide in an African setting
in general, and in Botswana in particular. The increase in intimate
femicide is an issue of concern, which calls for collective effort to address.
This article also examines trends offemicide in Botswana, and the
antecedents and the precipitating factors. Some studies have implicated
societal and cultural dynamics as playing significant roles in intimate
femicide in the African setting. It is believed that the patriarchal nature
of most African settings and the ideology of male supremacy have relegated
women to a subordinate role. Consequently, respect for women
in any relationship with men is lopsided in favor of men and has led to
abuse of women, including intimate femicide. Other militating factors in
intimate femicide ,are examined and the implications for counseling to
assist the endangered female partner are discussed
Paraxial propagation of a quantum charge in a random magnetic field
The paraxial (parabolic) theory of a near forward scattering of a quantum
charged particle by a static magnetic field is presented. From the paraxial
solution to the Aharonov-Bohm scattering problem the transverse transfered
momentum (the Lorentz force) is found. Multiple magnetic scattering is
considered for two models: (i) Gaussian -correlated random magnetic
field; (ii) a random array of the Aharonov-Bohm magnetic flux line. The
paraxial gauge-invariant two-particle Green function averaged with respect to
the random field is found by an exact evaluation of the Feynman integral. It is
shown that in spite of the anomalous character of the forward scattering, the
transport properties can be described by the Boltzmann equation. The Landau
quantization in the field of the Aharonov-Bohm lines is discussed.Comment: Figures and references added. Many typos corrected. RevTex, 25 pages,
