Socio-Economic Situation of the Sverdlovsk Region in 1992: the First Year of “Shock Therapy” (according to Regional Statistics)

    Get PDF
The socio-economic status of the Middle Urals in 1992, the first year of the implementation of the well-known program of “shock therapy” is considered. The selected topic seems relevant and of practical importance in the context of studying the mechanism for implementing large-scale reforms. The study was conducted on archival material. It is stated that in the history of modern Russia 1992 is a special period in its socio-economic significance. It is argued that the forms and methods of implementing “shock therapy” in Russia have left a deep, controversial and generally disturbing impression in the memory of most of its population. It is declared that the “shock therapy” of the 1990s in Russia in its essence was very similar to the new economic policy of the 1920s. It is shown that in the end of 1991 the USSR economy was in a state of deep systemic crisis and with virtually no reserves, on the verge of a complete collapse. It is noted that in 1992 the level of per capita consumption of food and non-food products by the majority of the population of the Sverdlovsk region continued to decrease. It is proved that the Sverdlovsk region in the Soviet period of the XX century was turned into a region with a hypertrophied industrial sector of the economy. It is concluded that the influence of long-term socio-economic mechanisms launched in 1992, will be experienced by the Russian society for a very long time

    Get PDF
Dopa-responsive dystonia (DRD) is a rare progressive genetically heterogenous disorder with pediatric onset. DRD is 3 times as prevalent in women than in men. This article reports a clinical case of DRD in a young female presenting with paraparesis, foot dystonia (more pronounced in the right foot) and pronounced walking impairment, who was admitted for emergency treatment to a Neurology Unit. Based on the additional tests, which included a levodopa trial and Sanger sequencing, the patient was diagnosed with DRD. Levodopa caused a considerable improvement of the symptoms. The article describes the clinical features of the disease, talks about its differential diagnosis, genetic predisposition and treatment strategy. © 2020 Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University. A quantitative and qualitative analysis of food consumption in the families of collective farmers in the Molotov and Sverdlovsk regions is provided in the article. The author used materials from the funds of two archives: the Russian State Archive of Economics (RSAE) and the State Archives of the Sverdlovsk Region (SASR), some of which have never been published. The source base for writing this article was the materials of budget surveys of the population, which have a long history in our country. It is argued that the need for high-quality and properly structured nutrition is one of the basic needs of human existence. It is stated that the level of consumption of food products by the population of the Soviet Union in 1946—1950 was determined by the harsh post-war conditions. Attention is focused on the fact that a powerful decrease in the livestock component of the collective farm backyard, combined with a decrease in income from work on the collective farm, could not but affect the level of income and consumption of collective farm families, including nutrition. It is proved that in the studied period — the first post-war five years — the level of nutrition of collective farm families should be assessed as unsatisfactory

Problems of Selecting an Anticoagulant for Secondary Stroke Prevention in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation

The article describes the urgent problem of ischemic stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation. It is proved that ischemic stroke in combination with AF is the most severe in terms of developing stable motor and speech disorders and disability. The frail older patients, as well as patients with swallowing disorders and reduced medical adherence present a special problem from this point of view. The most famous clinical studies on secondary prevention of cardioembolic stroke are RE-LY, ROCKET-AF, and ARISTOTLE. Based on subanalyses of randomized controlled trials, direct oral anticoagulants demonstrated a favorable efficacy profile in patients with atrial fibrillation and stroke/ transient ischemic attack, but the level of knowledge on each of them remained different. A number of advantages of rivaroxaban for primary and secondary prevention of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation, including the elderly and patients with cognitive impairments and swallowing disorders, have been demonstrated. © 2021 Vserossiiskoe Obshchestvo Kardiologov. Production of Consumer Goods by Industry of Middle Urals in 1971—1980

    Get PDF
The relevance of the study is due to the enduring theoretical and practical interest shown by Russian society in the historical period studied in the article. The novelty of the study is seen in the fact that the materials from the funds of two regional archives are used in the article: the Current Archive of the Territorial Authority of the Federal State Statistics Service for the Sverdlovsk Region and the Center for Documentation of Public Organizations of the Sverdlovsk Region, some of which are introduced into scientific circulation for the first time. It is emphasized that the decade under study was the peak of the historical period known as “stagnant”, becoming the last relatively prosperous decade in the history of the USSR. The authors state that the policy of “détente” provided the country with a certain foreign policy stability. Attention is focused on the fact that the development of stagnation phenomena in the country’s economy in the 1970s is clearly visible when analyzing the production of consumer goods on the example of almost any of its regions, including the Middle Urals. It is proved that during the decade under study there was no significant improvement in providing the population of the region with industrial food products. It is concluded that similar stagnation phenomena were observed in most and other areas of consumer goods production

The paper summarizes an update on the morbidity, mortality, and a risk for recurrence of stroke occurring in babies. It shows a variety of conditions and syndromes which may be responsible for stroke in infancy. Babies with the signs of intrauterine infection and congenital heart disease, the carriers of major thrombophilia gene mutations, may be regarded as a risk group

LPDs – «Linked to penumbra» discharges or EEG correlate of excitotoxicity: A review based hypothesis

    Get PDF
Periodic lateralized epileptiform discharges (PLEDs) or lateralized periodic discharges (LPDs) are a well-known variant of pathological EEG activity. However, the mechanisms underpinning the appearance of this pattern are not completely understood. The heterogeneity of the features derived from LPDs patterns, and the wide range of pathological conditions in which they occur, raise a question about the unifying mechanisms underlying these phenomena. This paper reassesses the current opinion surrounding LPDs which considers glutamate excitotoxicity to be the primary pathophysiological basis, and the penumbral region to be the main morphological substrate. Arguments in favour of this hypothesis are presented, with interpretations supported by evidence from recent literature involving clinical and experimental data. Presently, no single hypothesis places considerable emphasis on the pathochemical properties of LPDs, which are implicitly meaningful towards better understanding of the clinical significance of this pattern. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.This work was supported by the Russian Science Foundation [grant number 16-18-10371 ]

Level of Food Consumption by Population of Sverdlovsk Region (Budget Surveys in 1986—1990)

Issues related to the level of consumption by the population of the USSR in the “perestroika” period of its history are considered. In order to conduct an objective historical analysis of the problem, the authors used materials from the funds of three archives, some of which are introduced into scientific circulation for the first time. It is emphasized that the second half of the 1980s was crucial for the Soviet Union, becoming the last five years in its difficult history. The results of a comparative analysis of food consumption by the population of the Sverdlovsk region in the study period are presented. A clear discrepancy between the level of consumption of a number of food products by the population of the Middle Urals and the norms of their scientifically grounded rational consumption is determined. The emphasis is made on the fact that in the diet of Soviet citizens there was always a very shortage of vegetables, melons, fruits and, to some extent, fish products. It is proved that the chronic underconsumption of these products was to a certain extent “compensated” by the increased consumption of sugar, confectionery and dairy products, and in the difficult 1940s–1950s — bakery products and potatoes.  It is concluded that it is not necessary to overly dramatize the “material” factor in the development of disintegration processes that led to the collapse of the Soviet Union

Animal Husbandry in Sverdlovsk Region in 1953—1985

The relevance of the work is due to the enduring theoretical and practical interest shown by Russian society in the historical period considered in the article. The novelty of the study is seen in the fact that the materials from the funds of one federal and two regional archives, some of which are introduced into scientific circulation for the first time are used in the article. It is emphasized that the period under study included a huge number of events that directly affected the state of the country’s agriculture, including husbandry. It is argued that by the beginning of the 20th century the Middle Urals already had a fairly developed livestock sector. Attention is focused on the fact that the husbandry sector of the region met the beginning of the study period with poor performance. The authors express their conviction that the personal subsidiary plot of citizens (PSP) played an important role in providing the population with livestock products throughout the study period. It is concluded that, despite all the vicissitudes and cataclysms, the average per capita consumption of the three most important husbandry products (meat, milk and eggs) among a significant part of the population of the region by the beginning of the 1970s had reached the level of scientifically based consumption norms
