    Possibility of valence-fluctuation mediated superconductivity in Cd-doped CeIrIn5_5 probed by In-NQR

    We report on a pressure-induced evolution of exotic superconductivity and spin correlations in CeIr(In1−x_{1-x}Cdx_{x})5_5 by means of In-Nuclear-Quadrupole-Resonance (NQR) studies. Measurements of an NQR spectrum and nuclear-spin-lattice-relaxation rate 1/T11/T_1 have revealed that antiferromagnetism induced by the Cd-doping emerges locally around Cd dopants, but superconductivity is suddenly induced at TcT_c = 0.7 and 0.9 K at 2.34 and 2.75 GPa, respectively. The unique superconducting characteristics with a large fraction of the residual density of state at the Fermi level that increases with TcT_c differ from those for anisotropic superconductivity mediated by antiferromagnetic correlations. By incorporating the pressure dependence of the NQR frequency pointing to the valence change of Ce, we suggest that unconventional superconductivity in the CeIr(In1−x_{1-x}Cdx_{x})5_5 system may be mediated by valence fluctuations.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letter

    Water concentration in self-etching primers affects their aggressiveness and bonding efficacy to dentin

    Water is required to ionize acid resin monomers for demineralization of tooth substrates. We tested the null hypothesis that altering the water concentration in two-step self-etching primers has no effect on their aggressiveness and bonding efficacy to dentin. Five experimental self-etching primers were prepared with resin-water-ethanol volume ratios of 9-0-1, 8-1-1, 7-2-1, 5-4-1, and 3-6-1. They were applied to smear-layer-covered dentin, followed by a bonding resin and composite build-ups for microtensile bond testing and TEM examination of tracer penetration. Increasing water concentration from 0-60 vol% improved acidic monomer ionization that was manifested as increasing hybrid layer thickness. However, significantly higher bond strength was observed in the 7-2-1 group, with minimal nanoleakage in the corresponding hybrid layer. When self-etching primers are formulated, a balance must be achieved to provide sufficient water for adequate ionization of the acidic monomers, without lowering the resin concentration too much, to optimize their bonding efficacy to dentin.published_or_final_versio

    Diagnosis of Occlusal Caries with Dynamic Slicing of 3D Optical Coherence Tomography Images

    Detecting the extent of occlusal caries is a clinically important but challenging task required for treatment decision making. The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic power of 3D swept-source optical coherence tomography (OCT) for evaluation of occlusal caries in comparison with X-ray radiography. Extracted human molars not exhibiting American Dental Association (ADA) criteria advanced caries were mounted in a silicone block and digital dental radiographs were captured from the buccal side. Subsequently, occlusal surfaces were scanned with a prototype Yoshida Dental OCT. Thirteen examiners evaluated the presence and extent of caries on radiographs and dynamically sliced 3D OCT video images, using a 4 level scale-0: intact; 1: enamel demineralization without cavitation; 2: enamel caries with cavitation; 3: dentin caries with or without cavitation. Sensitivity, specificity and area under operating characteristic curves (Az) were statistically analyzed (alpha = 0.05). Reliability analysis showed an excellent agreement among the 13 examiners for both methods. The OCT presented a significantly higher sensitivity and Az value for the detection of caries compared to radiographs (p < 0.05). Radiography showed especially low sensitivity for dentin caries (0-2 versus 3). Dynamic slicing of 3D OCT volumes is a powerful adjunct tool to visual inspection to diagnose the dentin occlusal caries in vitro

    New Universality Class of Quantum Criticality in Ce- and Yb-based Heavy Fermions

    A new universality class of quantum criticality emerging in itinerant electron systems with strong local electron correlations is discussed. The quantum criticality of a Ce- or Yb-valence transition gives us a unified explanation for unconventional criticality commonly observed in heavy fermion metals such as YbRh2Si2 and \beta-YbAlB4, YbCu5-xAlx, and CeIrIn5. The key origin is due to the locality of the critical valence fluctuation mode emerging near the quantum critical end point of the first-order valence transition, which is caused by strong electron correlations for f electrons. Wider relevance of this new criticality and important future measurements to uncover its origin are also discussed.Comment: 20 pages, 4 figure

    Eustatic change modulates exhumation in the Japanese Alps

    The exhumation of bedrock is controlled by the interplay between tectonics, surface processes, and climate. The highest exhumation rates of centimeters per year are recorded in zones of highly active tectonic convergence such as the Southern Alps of New Zealand or the Himalayan syntaxes, where high rock uplift rates combine with very active surface processes. Using a combination of different thermochronometric systems including trapped-charge thermochronometry, we show that such rates also occur in the Hida Mountain Range, Japanese Alps. Our results imply that centimeter per year rates of exhumation are more common than previously thought. Our thermochronometry data allow the development of time series of exhumation rate changes at the time scale of glacial-interglacial cycles, which show a fourfold increase in baseline rates to rates of ~10 mm/yr within the past ~65 k.y. This increase in exhumation rate is likely explained by knickpoint propagation due to a combination of very high precipitation rates, climatic change, sea-level fall, range-front faulting, and moderate rock uplift. Our data resolve centimeter-scale sub-Quaternary exhumation rate changes, which show that in regions with horizontal convergence, coupling between climate, surface processes, and tectonics can exert a significant and rapid effect on rates of exhumatio
