Suicidal Ideation and Attempts Among Sexual Minority Youth Receiving Social Services
The increased risk for suicidal ideation and attempts among sexual minority youth has been documented in studies using both convenience samples and representative community samples. However, as most youth do not access social services, these studies do not necessarily represent the sexual minority youth that community-based social workers may encounter in their day-today practice. As such, the present study on risk and protective factors related to suicidality surveyed 182 sexual minority youth (ages 14-21) who sought assistance at a community-based social service agency in Denver, CO. Similar to existing literature, the findings suggest that risk factors related to suicidality include hopelessness, methamphetamine use, homelessness, and inschool victimization. However, unlike studies of the general youth population, this study found that African American and male sexual minority youth were not at lower risk of suicidality than sexual minority youth who were, respectively, white or female. Additionally, our findings suggest that the presence of gay-straight alliances in schools may function as a protective resource for sexual minority youth. Implications for social work practice are discussed

Carbon Monoxide on Demand: Light-Induced CO Release of Flavonols
Carbon monoxide (CO) is an extremely useful molecule with applications in industrial manufacturing, synthetic procedures as a C1 building block, and as a potential pharmaceutical to produce anti-inflammatory effects and vasodilation. However, the toxicity associated with CO has prevented its full utilization. In order to safely handle CO, compounds and molecules have been developed that act as storage materials for the gas. Ideal storage platforms only release CO upon stimulation via a trigger. Light activation is the most desirable trigger as it can be regulated in terms of the intensity and the wavelength of light used. The majority of light-induced CO-storage platforms that have been reported to date consist of metal carbonyl compounds where CO is bound directly to a metal center. However, disadvantages inherent to this motif, such as potential toxicity associated with the metal and lack of characterization of CO release remnant(s), has pushed the research community to search for alternative CO storage structures.
The research presented in this dissertation outlines our approach toward the development of safe-to-handle, light-induced CO release platforms. We use a flavonol structure similar to those found in fruits and vegetables, such as quercetin, as a light-induced CO release unit. Through changes in the structure of the flavonol and its surrounding environment in chemical compounds, we have found ways to strategically control the light-induced CO release reactivity of the flavonol. Chemical compounds developed in this project are of interest for studying the effects of CO in biological systems and applications in synthetic processes
Fatty Acid Carcass Mapping
We hypothesized that subcutaneous (s.c.) adipose tissue would differ in
monounsaturated (MUFA) and saturated fatty acid (SFA) composition among different
depots throughout a beef carcass. To test this, 50 carcasses from a variety of breed types
and backgrounds were sampled. External fat samples were collected from eight different
carcass locations: round, sirloin, loin, rib, chuck, brisket, plate and flank. Samples were
used to provide information on slip points, fatty acid composition and MUFA:SFA
ratios. Lipids were extracted from s.c. adipose tissue by a modified
chloroform:methanol procedure, and fatty acid composition and slip points were
measured. The brisket was significantly lower in palmitic (16:0) and stearic (18:0) acid
than the other seven sampling sites (P = 0.001). The brisket demonstrated the highest
values of MUFA (P = 0.001) with the exception of possessing the lowest value of transvaccenic
(18:1t11) acid (P = 0.002). There were also significant differences in the
amounts of PUFA among the eight sampling sites. The lowest values were from the
brisket with a mean of 25.1. The flank had the highest slip point with a mean of 39.0
(P < or = 0.001). There was a high negative correlation shown between palmitoleic and
stearic acid (R2 = 0.827). The brisket displayed the highest values for MUFA:SFA ratios (P = 0.001), whereas the flank was the lowest. Due to the significant differences
amongst fat depots within bovine carcasses in their fatty acid composition we conclude
that substantial differences exist across fat depots
Interpersonal emotion regulation: a review of social and developmental components
A staple theme in clinical psychology, emotion regulation, or the ability to manage one's emotions, is directly linked with personal wellbeing and the ability to effectively navigate the social world. Until recently, this concept has been limited to a focus on intrapersonal processes, such as suppression. Less emphasis has been placed on developmental, social, and cultural aspects of emotion regulation. We argue here that as social beings, our engagement in emotion regulation may often occur interpersonally, with trusted others helping us to regulate our emotions. Assessment of fish populations and habitat on Oculina Bank, a deep-sea coral marine protected area off eastern Florida
A portion of the Oculina Bank located off eastern Florida is
a marine protected area (MPA) preserved for its dense populations of the ivory tree coral (Oculina varicosa),
which provides important habitat for fish. Surveys of fish assemblages and benthic habitat were conducted inside and outside the MPA in 2003 and 2005 by using remotely operated
vehicle video transects and digital still imagery. Fish species composition, biodiversity, and grouper densities
were used to determine whether O. varicosa forms an essential habitat compared to other structure-forming
habitats and to examine the effectiveness of the MPA. Multivariate analyses indicated no differences in fish
assemblages or biodiversity among hardbottom habitat types and grouper densities were highest among the most complex habitats; however the higher densities were not exclusive to
coral habitat. Therefore, we conclude that O. varicosa was functionally equivalent to other hardbottom habitats. Even though fish assemblages were not different among management
areas, biodiversity and grouper densities were higher inside the MPA compared to outside. The percentage of intact coral was also higher inside the MPA. These results provide initial evidence demonstrating effectiveness of the MPA for restoring reef fish and their habitat. This is the first study to compare reef fish populations on O. varicosa with other structure-forming reef habitats and also the first to examine the effectiveness of the MPA for restoring fish populations and live reef cover
Recruiting the ‘quality teacher’: equity, faith, and passion
The figure of the teacher is becoming increasingly significant in schooling systems around the globe. In this article, we consider how the market-oriented system of schooling in the Australian state of New South Wales may be reflecting and (re)shaping understandings of who teachers are and should be. To do this, we present a corpus-assisted analysis of advertisements for teaching positions gathered across the public, Catholic and independent school sectors, to explore how schools and school sectors construct images of the ‘good’ or ‘quality’ teacher. Findings indicate a stronger focus on the ‘person’ of the teacher in independent schools; and a surprising lack of pedagogical concerns within any sector. Our contribution is novel in first, using a relatively untapped data source to explore how the figure of the teacher is constructed in the public domain; and second, demonstrating the reciprocal relationship between teachers and schools in the marketing of educational products
