Wireless Communication in Process Control Loop: Requirements Analysis, Industry Practices and Experimental Evaluation
Wireless communication is already used in process automation for process monitoring. The next stage of implementation of wireless technology in industrial applications is for process control. The need for wireless networked control systems has evolved because of the necessity for extensibility, mobility, modularity, fast deployment, and reduced installation and maintenance cost. These benefits are only applicable given that the wireless network of choice can meet the strict requirements of process control applications, such as latency. In this regard, this paper is an effort towards identifying current industry practices related to implementing process control over a wireless link and evaluates the suitability of ISA100.11a network for use in process control through experiments

Ultrafast Resonant Polarization Interferometry: Towards the First Direct Detection of Vacuum Polarization
Vacuum polarization, an effect predicted nearly 70 years ago, is still yet to
be directly detected despite significant experimental effort. Previous attempts
have made use of large liquid-helium cooled electromagnets which inadvertently
generate spurious signals that mask the desired signal. We present a novel
approach for the ultra-sensitive detection of optical birefringence that can be
usefully applied to a laboratory detection of vacuum polarization. The new
technique has a predicted birefringence measurement sensitivity of in a 1 second measurement. When combined with the extreme
polarizing fields achievable in this design we predict that a vacuum
polarization signal will be seen in a measurement of just a few days in

The Roles of Experts and Expert-Based Information in the Advocacy Coalition Framework: Conceptual and Empirical Considerations Based on the Acid Mine Drainage Case Study in Gauteng, South Africa
The Advocacy Coalition Framework (ACF) remains one of the leading conceptual models in the policy sciences because it continues to be revised and updated as required. A focus area of the ACF that requires further theorization is the roles of experts and expert-based information in influencing policy problem contexts. Our article takes a necessary step in this direction by (1) evaluating the usefulness of Weible’s expectations regarding the uses of expert-based information in different types of policy subsystems and factors that contribute to shifts from one subsystem to another; and (2) making critical observations that result from this evaluation in the context of the controversial acid mine drainage policy case study in South Africa. The findings of our case study analysis indicate that Weible’s framework performed reasonably well but also revealed opportunities for further improvement. We therefore suggest adding awareness raising as a use of expert-based information, developing a typology of different types of experts who participate in policy subsystems, and including a focus on the use of expert-based information in policy subsystem shifts. We also reflect upon the relevance and importance of continuing to expand ACF applications to countries outside of North America and Western Europe
Semi-Empirical Model for Nano-Scale Device Simulations
We present a new semi-empirical model for calculating electron transport in
atomic-scale devices. The model is an extension of the Extended H\"uckel method
with a self-consistent Hartree potential. This potential models the effect of
an external bias and corresponding charge re-arrangements in the device. It is
also possible to include the effect of external gate potentials and continuum
dielectric regions in the device. The model is used to study the electron
transport through an organic molecule between gold surfaces, and it is
demonstrated that the results are in closer agreement with experiments than ab
initio approaches provide. In another example, we study the transition from
tunneling to thermionic emission in a transistor structure based on graphene

Chalcogenide-glass polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber for mid-infrared supercontinuum generation
In this paper, we report the design and fabrication of a highly birefringent
polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber (PM-PCF) made from chalcogenide
glass, and its application to linearly-polarized supercontinuum (SC) generation
in the mid-infrared region. The PM fiber was drawn using the casting method
from As38Se62 glass which features a transmission window from 2 to 10
and a high nonlinear index of 1.13.10mW. It has a
zero-dispersion wavelength around 4.5 and, at this wavelength, a large
birefringence of 6.10 and consequently strong polarization maintaining
properties are expected. Using this fiber, we experimentally demonstrate
supercontinuum generation spanning from 3.1-6.02 and 3.33-5.78
using femtosecond pumping at 4 and 4.53 , respectively. We
further investigate the supercontinuum bandwidth versus the input pump
polarization angle and we show very good agreement with numerical simulations
of the two-polarization model based on two coupled generalized nonlinear
Schr\"odinger equations.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figure
