    SuprimeCam Observation of Sporadic Meteors during Perseids 2004

    We report the serendipitous findings of 13 faint meteors and 44 artificial space objects by Subaru SuprimeCam imaging observations during 11-16 August 2004. The meteors, at about 100km altitude, and artificial satellites/debris in orbit, at 500km altitude or higher, were clearly discriminated by their apparent defocused image sizes. CCD photometry of the 13 meteors, including 1 Perseid, 1 Aquarid, and 11 sporadic meteors, was performed. We defined a peak video-rate magnitude by comparing the integrated photon counts from the brightest portion of the track traversed within 33ms to those from a 0-mag star during the same time duration. This definition gives magnitudes in the range 4.0< V_{vr} <6.4 and 4.1< I_{vr}<5.9 for these 13 meteors. The corresponding magnitude for virtual naked-eye observers could be somewhat fainter especially for the V-band observation, in which the [OI] 5577 line lasting about 1 sec as an afterglow could contribute to the integrated flux of the present 5-10 min CCD exposures. Although the spatial resolution is insufficient to resolve the source size of anything smaller than about 1 m, we developed a new estimate of the collisionally excited column diameter of these meteors. A diameter as small as a few mm was derived from their collisionally excited photon rates, meteor speed, and the volume density of the oxygen atoms at the 100km altitude. The actual column diameter of the radiating zone, however, could be as large as few 100m because the excited atoms travel that distance before they emit forbidden lines in 0.7 sec of its average lifetime.     Newcomers Meet the Intracluster Medium in the Coma Cluster

    A main topic at this meeting is how galaxies are affected when they enter for the first time the cluster environment from the outskirts. Most of the times we are forced to infer the environmental effects indirectly, relying on systematic variations of galaxy properties with environment, but there aren't many examples of direct observations able to unveil ongoing transformations taking place, and the corresponding mechanism producing it.     Hanbury Brown and Twiss Correlations of Anderson Localized Waves

    When light waves propagate through disordered photonic lattices, they can eventually become localized due to multiple scattering effects. Here we show experimentally that while the evolution and localization of the photon density distribution is similar in the two cases of diagonal and off-diagonal disorder, the density-density correlation carries a distinct signature of the type of disorder. We show that these differences reflect a symmetry in the spectrum and eigenmodes that exists in off-diagonally disordered lattices but is absent in lattices with diagonal disorder.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, comments welcom

    Pressure, Resistance, and Current Activation of Anisotropic Compressible Hall States

    Thermodynamic and electric properties of anisotropic compressible Hall states at higher Landau levels are studied using a mean field theory on the von Neumann lattice basis. It is shown that resistances agree with the recent experiments of anisotropic compressible states and the states have negative pressure.     Subaru Deep Survey VI. A Census of Lyman Break Galaxies at z=4 and 5 in the Subaru Deep Fields: Clustering Properties

    We investigate the clustering properties of 2,600 Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z=3.5-5.2 in two large blank fields, the Subaru Deep Field and the Subaru/XMM Deep Field (600arcmin^2 each). The angular correlation functions of these LBGs show a clear clustering at both z~4 and 5. The correlation lengths are r_0= 4.1^{+0.2}_{-0.2} and 5.9^{+1.3}_{-1.7} h_{100}^{-1} Mpc (r_0= 5.1^{+1.0}_{-1.1} and 5.9^{+1.3}_{-1.7} h_{100}^{-1} Mpc) for all the detected LBGs (for L>L* LBGs) at z~4 and 5, respectively. These correlation lengths correspond to galaxy-dark matter biases of b_g= 2.9^{+0.1}_{-0.1} and 4.6^{+0.9}_{-1.2} (b_g=3.5^{+0.6}_{-0.7} and 4.6^{+0.9}_{-1.2}), for all the detected LBGs (for L>L^* LBGs) at z~4 and 5, respectively. These results, combined with estimates for z~3 LBGs in the literature, show that the correlation length of L>L^* LBGs is almost constant, ~5 h_{100}^{-1} Mpc, over z~3-5, while the bias monotonically increases with redshift at z>3. We also find that for LBGs at z~4 the clustering amplitude increases with UV-continuum luminosity and with the amount of dust extinction. We estimate the mass of dark halos hosting various kinds of high-z galaxies including LBGs with the analytic model given by Sheth & Tormen (1999). We find that the typical mass of dark halos hosting L>L^* LBGs is about 1x10^{12} h_{70}^{-1}Msol over z~3-5, which is comparable to that of the Milky Way Galaxy. A single dark halo with ~10^{12} h_{70}^{-1} Msol is found to host 0.1-0.3 LBG on average but host about four K-band selected galaxies.Comment: 33 pages, 12 figures, ApJ in press.     We carried out a target survey for Lyman break galaxies ( LBGs) and Ly alpha emitters ( LAEs) around QSO SDSS J0211- 0009 at z= 4. 87. The deep and wide broadband and narrowband imaging simultaneously revealed the perspective structure of these two high- z populations. The LBGs without Ly alpha emission form a filamentary structure including the QSO, while the LAEs are distributed around the QSO but avoid it within a distance of similar to 4.5Mpc. On the other hand, we serendipitously discovered a protocluster with a significant concentration of LBGs and LAEs, where no strongly UVionizing source, such as a QSO or radio galaxy, is known to exist. In this cluster field, the two populations are spatially cross- correlated with each other. The relative spatial distribution of LAEs to LBGs in the QSO field is in stark contrast to that in the cluster field. We also found a weak trend showing that the number counts based on Ly alpha and UV continuum fluxes of LAEs in the QSO field are slightly lower than in the cluster field, whereas the number counts of LBGs are almost consistent with each other. The LAEs avoid the nearby region around the QSO where the local UV background radiation could be similar to 100 times stronger than the average for the epoch. The clustering segregation between LBGs and LAEs seen in the QSO field could be due to either enhanced early galaxy formation in an overdense environment, causing all the LAEs to evolve into LBGs, or local photoionization due to the strong UV radiation from the QSO, effectively causing a deficit in low- mass galaxies like LAEs.ArticleThe Astrophysical Journal. 663:765-773 (2007)journal articl

    Planck Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Cluster Mass Calibration using Hyper Suprime-Cam Weak Lensing

    Using ∼\sim140 deg2^2 Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey data, we stack the weak lensing (WL) signal around five Planck clusters found within the footprint. This yields a 15σ\sigma detection of the mean Planck cluster mass density profile. The five Planck clusters span a relatively wide mass range, MWL,500c=(2−30)×1014 M⊙/hM_{\rm WL,500c} = (2-30)\times10^{14}\,M_\odot/h with a mean mass of MWL,500c=(4.15±0.61)×1014 M⊙/hM_{\rm WL,500c} = (4.15\pm0.61)\times10^{14}\,M_\odot/h. The ratio of the stacked Planck Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) mass to the stacked WL mass is ⟨MSZ⟩/⟨MWL⟩=1−b=0.80±0.14 \langle M_{\rm SZ}\rangle/\langle M_{\rm WL}\rangle = 1-b = 0.80\pm0.14. This mass bias is consistent with previous WL mass calibrations of Planck clusters within the errors.     Probing the evolution of early-type galaxies using multi-colour number counts and redshift distributions

    We investigate pure luminosity evolution models for early-type (elliptical and S0) galaxies (i.e., no number density change or morphology transition), and examine whether these models are consistent with observed number counts in the B, I and K bands and redshift distributions of two samples of faint galaxies selected in the I and K bands. The models are characterized by the star formation time scale τSF\tau_{SF} and the time tgwt_{gw} when galactic wind blows in addition to several other conventional parameters. We find the single-burst model (τSF\tau_{SF}=0.1 Gyr and tgwt_{gw}=0.353 Gyr), which is known to reproduce the photometric properties of early-type galaxies in clusters, is inconsistent with redshift distributions of early-type galaxies in the field environment due to overpredictions of galaxies at z\gsim1.4 even with strong extinction which is at work until tgwt_{gw}. In order for dust extinction to be more effective, we change τSF\tau_{SF} and tgwt_{gw} as free parameters, and find that models with \tau_{SF}\gsim0.5 Gyr and tgw>1.0t_{gw}>1.0 Gyr can be made consistent with both the observed redshift distributions and number counts, if we introduce strong extinction (E(B−V)≥1(E(B-V)\geq1 as a peak value).
