    Effects of ethanol on membrane lipids III. Quantitative changes in lipid and fatty acid composition of nonpolar and polar lipids of mouse total liver, mitochondria and microsomes following ethanol feeding

    The effects of ethanol on the total, nonpolar, and polar lipids of whole liver, mitochondria, and microsomes have been evaluated. Differences in the fatty acid composition of various lipid subclasses have been compared in control and ethanol treated mice. On the whole polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially arachidonic (20∶4) and docosahexaenoic (22∶6), were found to decrease. The significance of an enzymatic mechanism vs. a peroxidative mechanism to explain the results is discussed. Decreases also were observed in the ratios of arachidonate/linoleate following ethanol feeding.     Aging in Rural Appalachia: Perspectives from Geriatric Social Service Professionals

    This paper uses qualitative methodology to explore the experience of growing old in rural Appalachia. Given the growing population of older adults seeking and utilizing services, it is important to understand the challenges and specific needs related to aging. Within the context of rural Appalachia, these challenges and needs may be different than those in urban areas or areas outside of the region itself. From interviews with 14 geriatric service providers in rural southeast Ohio, the authors were able to identity three prevalent themes associated with aging in rural North Central Appalachia: scarcity of resources, valuing neighbors and family, and the prevalence of drug use. These findings suggest that preparation and ongoing training of rural geriatric social workers should include attention to topics such as substance abuse and strengthening social support networks that often exist in these regions

    Choreography, controversy and child sex abuse: Theoretical reflections on a cultural criminological analysis of dance in a pop music video

    This article was inspired by the controversy over claims of ‘pedophilia!!!!’ undertones and the ‘triggering’ of memories of childhood sexual abuse in some viewers by the dance performance featured in the music video for Sia’s ‘Elastic Heart’ (2015). The case is presented for acknowledging the hidden and/or overlooked presence of dance in social scientific theory and cultural studies and how these can enhance and advance cultural criminological research. Examples of how these insights have been used within other disciplinary frameworks to analyse and address child sex crime and sexual trauma are provided, and the argument is made that popular cultural texts such as dance in pop music videos should be regarded as significant in analysing and tracing public perceptions and epistemologies of crimes such as child sex abuse

    Variation of the Fine-Structure Constant and Laser Cooling of Atomic Dysprosium

    Radio-frequency electric-dipole transitions between nearly degenerate, opposite parity levels of atomic dysprosium (Dy) were monitored over an eight-month period to search for a variation in the fine-structure constant, α\alpha. The data provide a rate of fractional temporal variation of α\alpha of (−2.4±2.3)×10−15(-2.4\pm2.3)\times10^{-15} yr−1^{-1} or a value of (−7.8±5.9)×10−6(-7.8 \pm 5.9) \times 10^{-6} for kαk_\alpha, the variation coefficient for α\alpha in a changing gravitational potential. All results indicate the absence of significant variation at the present level of sensitivity.     Investigation of the Gravitational Potential Dependence of the Fine-Structure Constant Using Atomic Dysprosium

    Radio-frequency E1 transitions between nearly degenerate, opposite parity levels of atomic dysprosium were monitored over an eight month period to search for a variation in the fine-structure constant. During this time period, data were taken at different points in the gravitational potential of the Sun. The data are fitted to the variation in the gravitational potential yielding a value of (−8.7±6.6)×10−6(-8.7 \pm 6.6) \times 10^{-6} for the fit parameter kαk_\alpha. This value gives the current best laboratory limit. In addition, our value of kαk_{\alpha} combined with other experimental constraints is used to extract the first limits on k_e and k_q. These coefficients characterize the variation of m_e/m_p and m_q/m_p in a changing gravitational potential, where m_e, m_p, and m_q are electron, proton, and quark masses. The results are ke=(4.9±3.9)×10−5k_e = (4.9 \pm 3.9) \times 10^{-5} and kq=(6.6±5.2)×10−5k_q = (6.6 \pm 5.2) \times 10^{-5}.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure

    Correcting Misconceptions About Gamification of Assessment: More Than SJTs and Badges

    Describing the current state of gamification, Chamorro-Premuzic, Winsborough, Sherman, and Hogan () provide a troubling contradiction: They offer examples of a broad spectrum of gamification interventions, but they then summarize the entirety of gamification as “the digital equivalent of situational judgment tests.” This mischaracterization grossly oversimplifies a rapidly growing area of research and practice both within and outside of industrial–organizational (I-O) psychology. We agree that situational judgment tests (SJTs) can be considered a type of gamified assessment, and gamification provides a toolkit to make SJTs even more gameful. However, the term gamification refers to a much broader and potentially more impactful set of tools than just SJTs, which are incremental, versatile, and especially valuable to practitioners in an era moving toward business-to-consumer (B2C) assessment models. In this commentary, we contend that gamification is commonly misunderstood and misapplied by I-O psychologists, and our goals are to remedy such misconceptions and to provide a research agenda designed to improve both the science and the practice surrounding gamification of human resource processes

    Documentary criminology: Girl Model as a case study

    Visual and cultural criminology are integrated with documentary filmmaking to develop a theoretically grounded, practice-based approach called ‘documentary criminology’. The first section establishes the need for documentary filmmaking in criminology and outlines methodological opportunities. The second section examines theoretically the aesthetics and substance of documentary criminology. The third section takes the film Girl Model (Redmon and Sabin, 2011) as a case study to demonstrate how documentary criminology embedded in lived experience (in this case, the experience of scouts that recruit young Russian girls, purportedly for the modelling industry) can depict sensuous immediacy. The final section contrasts the aesthetic and ethical consequences of documentary criminology within Carrabine’s (2012, 2014) concept of ‘just’ images to a documentary filmmaking approach that remains interpretively open-ended.     Long-range signaling by phosphoprotein waves arising from bistability in protein kinase cascades

    A hallmark of protein kinase/phosphatase cascades, including mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways, is the spatial separation of their components within cells. The top-level kinase, MAP3K, is phosphorylated at the cell membrane, and cytoplasmic kinases at sequential downstream levels (MAP2K and MAPK) spread the signal to distant targets. Given measured protein diffusivity and phosphatase activities, signal propagation by diffusion would result in a steep decline of MAP2K activity and low bisphosphorylated MAPK (ppMAPK) levels near the nucleus, especially in large cells, such as oocytes. Here, we show that bistability in a two-site MAPK (de)phosphorylation cycle generates a novel type of phosphoprotein wave that propagates from the surface deep into the cell interior. Positive feedback from ppMAPK to cytoplasmic MAP2K enhances the propagation span of the ppMAPK wave, making it possible to convey phosphorylation signals over exceedingly long distances. The finding of phosphorylation waves traveling with constant amplitude and high velocity may solve a long-standing enigma of survival signaling in developing neurons
