Does the term 'trophic' actually mean anti-amyloidogenic? The case of NGF.
The term trophic is widely used to indicate a general pro-survival action exerted on target cells by different classes of extracellular messengers, including neurotrophins (NTs), a family of low-molecular-weight proteins whose archetypal member is the nerve growth factor (NGF). The pro-survival action exerted by NTs results from a coordinated activation of multiple metabolic pathways, some of which have only recently come to light. NGF has been shown to exert a number of different, experimentally distinguishable effects on neurons, such as survival, differentiation of target neurons, growth of nerve fibers and their guidance (tropism) toward the source of its production. We have proposed a more complete definition of the NGF trophic action that should also include its newly discovered property of inhibiting the amyloidogenic processing of amyloid precursor protein (APP), which is among the first hypothesized primary trigger of Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis. First results from the CROP-11 deep seismic profile, central Apennines, Italy: evidence of mid-crustal folding
The CROP-11 deep seismic profile across the central Apennines, Italy, reveals a previously unknown, mid-crustal antiform here interpreted as a fault-bend fold-like structure. The seismic facies and gravity signature suggest that this structure consists of low-grade metamorphic rocks. Geomorphological, stratigraphic and tectonic evidence in the overlying shallow thrusts suggests that this structure developed in early to mid-Messinian time and grew out of sequence in late Messinianâ
Pliocene time. The out-of-sequence growth may reflect a taper subcriticality stage of the Apenninic thrust wedge, which

R-parity violation in SU(5)
We show that judiciously chosen R-parity violating terms in the minimal
renormalizable supersymmetric SU(5) are able to correct all the
phenomenologically wrong mass relations between down quarks and charged
leptons. The model can accommodate neutrino masses as well. One of the most
striking consequences is a large mixing between the electron and the Higgsino.
We show that this can still be in accord with data in some regions of the
parameter space and possibly falsified in future experiments.Comment: 30 pages, 1 figure. Revised version. To appear in JHE
Combined explanations of B-physics anomalies: the sterile neutrino solution
In this paper we provide a combined explanation of charged- and neutral-current B-physics anomalies assuming the presence of a light sterile neutrino NR which contributes to the B \u2192 D(*)\u3c4\u3bd processes. We focus in particular on two simplified models, where the mediator of the flavour anomalies is either a vector leptoquark U1\u3bc 3c (3, 1, 2/3) or a scalar leptoquark S1 3c (3\uaf , 1, 1/3). We find that U1\u3bc can successfully reproduce the required deviations from the Standard Model while being at the same time compatible with all other flavour and precision observables. The scalar leptoquark instead induces a tension between Bs mixing and the neutral-current anomalies. For both states we present the limits and future projections from direct searches at the LHC finding that, while at present both models are perfectly allowed, all the parameter space will be tested with more luminosity. Finally, we study in detail the cosmological constraints on the sterile neutrino NR and the conditions under which it can be a candidate for dark matter
Transcendental-Phenomenological Proof and Descriptive Metaphysics
Following P.F. Strawson's reading of Kant, the majority of the literature on transcendental arguments seeks to divorce such arguments from their original Kantian context. This thesis is concerned with Mark Sacks's recent defence of transcendental arguments, which takes a different approach. A critique is given of Sacks's work and extensions and modifications of his approach are recommended. It is proposed that certain difficulties encountered by Kant's transcendentally-ideal approach can be overcome with Hegelian solutions
