Pair Production of small Black Holes in Heterotic String Theories
We study pair production of small BPS BH's in heterotic strings compactified
on tori and in the FHSV model. After recalling the identification of small BH's
in the perturbative BPS spectrum, we compute the tree-level amplitudes for
processes initiated by massless vector bosons or gravitons. We then analyze the
resulting cross sections in terms of energy and angular distributions. Finally,
we briefly comment on scenari with large extra dimensions and on
generalizations of our results to non-BPS, non-extremal and rotating BH's.Comment: 33 page
Holographic Wilsonian flows and emergent fermions in extremal charged black holes
We study holographic Wilsonian RG in a general class of asymptotically AdS
backgrounds with a U(1) gauge field. We consider free charged Dirac fermions in
such a background, and integrate them up to an intermediate radial distance,
yielding an equivalent low energy dual field theory. The new ingredient,
compared to scalars, involves a `generalized' basis of coherent states which
labels a particular half of the fermion components as coordinates or momenta,
depending on the choice of quantization (standard or alternative). We apply
this technology to explicitly compute RG flows of charged fermionic operators
and their composites (double trace operators) in field theories dual to (a)
pure AdS and (b) extremal charged black hole geometries. The flow diagrams and
fixed points are determined explicitly. In the case of the extremal black hole,
the RG flows connect two fixed points at the UV AdS boundary to two fixed
points at the IR AdS_2 region. The double trace flow is shown, both numerically
and analytically, to develop a pole singularity in the AdS_2 region at low
frequency and near the Fermi momentum, which can be traced to the appearance of
massless fermion modes on the low energy cut-off surface. The low energy field
theory action we derive exactly agrees with the semi-holographic action
proposed by Faulkner and Polchinski in arXiv:1001.5049 [hep-th]. In terms of
field theory, the holographic version of Wilsonian RG leads to a quantum theory
with random sources. In the extremal black hole background the random sources
become `light' in the AdS_2 region near the Fermi surface and emerge as new

Holographic RG flow of the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio in strongly coupled anisotropic plasma
We study holographic RG flow of the shear viscosity tensor of anisotropic,
strongly coupled N=4 super-Yang-Mills plasma by using its type IIB supergravity
dual in anisotropic bulk spacetime. We find that the shear viscosity tensor has
three independent components in the anisotropic bulk spacetime away from the
boundary, and one of the components has a non-trivial RG flow while the other
two have a trivial one. For the component of the shear viscosity tensor with
non-trivial RG flow, we derive its RG flow equation, and solve the equation
analytically to second order in the anisotropy parameter 'a'. We derive the RG
equation using the equation of motion, holographic Wilsonian RG method, and
Kubo's formula. All methods give the same result. Solving the equation, we find
that the ratio of the component of the shear viscosity tensor to entropy
density 'eta/s' flows from above '1/4pi' at the horizon (IR) to below '1/4pi'
at the boundary (UV) where it violates the holographic shear viscosity
(Kovtun-Son-Starinets) bound and where it agrees with the other longitudinal

Lignin biomarkers as tracers of mercury sources in lakes water column
This study presents the role of specific terrigenous organic compounds as important vectors of mercury (Hg) transported from watersheds to lakes of the Canadian boreal forest. In order to differentiate the autochthonous from the allochthonous organic matter (OM), lignin derived biomarker signatures [Lambda, S/V, C/V, P/(V ? S), 3,5-Bd/V and (Ad/Al)v] were used. Since lignin is exclusively produced by terrigenous plants, this approach can give a non equivocal picture of the watershed inputs to the lakes. Moreover, it allows a characterization of the source of OM and its state of degradation. The water column of six lakes from the Canadian Shield was sampled monthly between June and September 2005. Lake total dissolved Hg concentrations and Lambda were positively correlated, meaning that Hg and ligneous inputs are linked (dissolved OM r2 = 0.62, p\0.0001; particulate OM r2 = 0.76, p\0.0001). Ratios of P/(V ? S) and 3,5-Bd/V from both dissolved OM and particulate OM of the water column suggest an inverse relationship between the progressive state of pedogenesis and maturation of the OM in soil before entering the lake, and the Hg concentrations in the water column. No relation was found between Hg levels in the lakes and the watershed flora composition—angiosperm versus gymnosperm or woody versus non-woody compounds. This study has significant implications for watershed management of ecosystems since limiting fresh terrestrial OM inputs should reduce Hg inputs to the aquatic systems. This is particularly the case for largescale land-use impacts, such as deforestation, agriculture and urbanization, associated to large quantities of soil OM being transferred to aquatic systems
D-Branes on the Conifold and N=1 Gauge/Gravity Dualities
We review extensions of the AdS/CFT correspondence to gauge/ gravity
dualities with N=1 supersymmetry. In particular, we describe the gauge/gravity
dualities that emerge from placing D3-branes at the apex of the conifold. We
consider first the conformal case, with discussions of chiral primary operators
and wrapped D-branes. Next, we break the conformal symmetry by adding a stack
of partially wrapped D5-branes to the system, changing the gauge group and
introducing a logarithmic renormalization group flow. In the gravity dual, the
effect of these wrapped D5-branes is to turn on the flux of 3-form field
strengths. The associated RR 2-form potential breaks the U(1) R-symmetry to
and we study this phenomenon in detail. This extra flux also leads to
deformation of the cone near the apex, which describes the chiral symmetry

Capturing and testing perceptual-cognitive expertise: A comparison of stationary and movement response methods
Numerous methods have been used to study expertise and performance. In the present article, we compare the cognitive thought processes of skilled soccer players when responding to film-based simulations of defensive situations involving two different experimental conditions. Participants either remained stationary in a seated position (n = 10) or were allowed to move (n = 10) in response to life-size film sequences of 11 versus 11 open-play soccer situations viewed from a player’s perspective. Response accuracy and retrospective verbal reports of thinking were collected across the two task conditions. In the movement-based response group, participants generated a greater number of verbal report statements, including a higher proportion of evaluation, prediction, and action planning statements, than did participants in the stationary group. Findings suggest that the processing strategies employed during performance differ depending on the nature of the response required of participants. Implications for behavioral methods and experimental design are discussed
Spatio-temporal Models of Lymphangiogenesis in Wound Healing
Several studies suggest that one possible cause of impaired wound healing is
failed or insufficient lymphangiogenesis, that is the formation of new
lymphatic capillaries. Although many mathematical models have been developed to
describe the formation of blood capillaries (angiogenesis), very few have been
proposed for the regeneration of the lymphatic network. Lymphangiogenesis is a
markedly different process from angiogenesis, occurring at different times and
in response to different chemical stimuli. Two main hypotheses have been
proposed: 1) lymphatic capillaries sprout from existing interrupted ones at the
edge of the wound in analogy to the blood angiogenesis case; 2) lymphatic
endothelial cells first pool in the wound region following the lymph flow and
then, once sufficiently populated, start to form a network. Here we present two
PDE models describing lymphangiogenesis according to these two different
hypotheses. Further, we include the effect of advection due to interstitial
flow and lymph flow coming from open capillaries. The variables represent
different cell densities and growth factor concentrations, and where possible
the parameters are estimated from biological data. The models are then solved
numerically and the results are compared with the available biological

A review of elliptical and disc galaxy structure, and modern scaling laws
A century ago, in 1911 and 1913, Plummer and then Reynolds introduced their
models to describe the radial distribution of stars in `nebulae'. This article
reviews the progress since then, providing both an historical perspective and a
contemporary review of the stellar structure of bulges, discs and elliptical
galaxies. The quantification of galaxy nuclei, such as central mass deficits
and excess nuclear light, plus the structure of dark matter halos and cD galaxy
envelopes, are discussed. Issues pertaining to spiral galaxies including dust,
bulge-to-disc ratios, bulgeless galaxies, bars and the identification of
pseudobulges are also reviewed. An array of modern scaling relations involving
sizes, luminosities, surface brightnesses and stellar concentrations are
presented, many of which are shown to be curved. These 'redshift zero'
relations not only quantify the behavior and nature of galaxies in the Universe
today, but are the modern benchmark for evolutionary studies of galaxies,
whether based on observations, N-body-simulations or semi-analytical modelling.
For example, it is shown that some of the recently discovered compact
elliptical galaxies at 1.5 < z < 2.5 may be the bulges of modern disc galaxies.Comment: Condensed version (due to Contract) of an invited review article to

Fluid intake and incidence of renal cell carcinoma in UK women
Background:It has been suggested that the apparent protective effect of alcohol intake on renal cell carcinoma may be due to the diluting effect of carcinogens by a high total fluid intake. We assessed the association between intakes of total fluids and of specific beverages on the risk of renal cell carcinoma in a large prospective cohort of UK women.Methods:Information on beverage consumption was obtained from a questionnaire sent 3 years after recruitment into the Million Women Study. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for renal cell carcinoma associated with beverage consumption adjusted for age, region of residence, socioeconomic status, smoking, and body mass index.Results:After an average of 5.2 years of follow-up, 588 cases of renal cell carcinoma were identified among 779 369 women. While alcohol intake was associated with a reduced risk of renal cell carcinoma (RR for 2 vs 1 drink per day: 0.76; 95% CI: 0.61-0.96; P for trend0.02), there was no association with total fluid intake (RR for 12 vs 7 drinks per day: 1.15; 95% CI: 0.91-1.45; P for trend0.3) or with intakes of specific beverages.Conclusions:The apparent protective effect of alcohol on the risk of renal cell carcinoma is unlikely to be related to a high fluid intake. © 2011 Cancer Research UK All rights reserved
