    The Ideological Questions of Marriage in Thomas Hardy's Jude the Obscure

    As one of the prominent ideologies of the nineteenth-century— in a complex interrelation with other contemporary ideological discourses particularly femininity and marriage—religion adopts a critical stance in Hardy's presentation of characters. Breaching the religio-conventional image of femininity as “Angel in the House” and “Cow Woman,” Hardy's Jude the Obscure (1895) is indeed deemed to be his milestone in presenting his anti-Christian attitudes towards the contemporary religion. This study aims to present Hardy's outright hostility towards the nineteenth-century Christianity through his creation of non-conformist characters, necessitating a parallel study with other contemporary discourses regarding marriage and femininity, and conflict with the religion of the time. Hardy's magnum opus, the work on which he was to stake his final reputation as a novelist, was clearly Jude the Obscure which as a noticeable socio-religious experimentation of the late nineteenth-century, reveals Hardy's perception of new ideas about femininity and marriage by presenting the hot contemporary issues of “New Woman” and “Free Union” through the development and presentation of Sue Bridehead and her free union with Jude, respectively. Hardy's presentation of Sue Bridehead as a “New Woman,” and employing the “Free Union” in marked contrast with the nineteenth-century convention of marriage as a “Bonded Pair” is Hardy's closing upshot of his final novelistic attempt. The non-conformist Jude and Sue are presented as figures touching the Victorian Christian standards of morality, while, the final tragic destiny of Jude and Sue's helplessness attest to the writer's substantial contribution as a Victorian male novelist to the ideologies circulating at the time

    On UHECR energy estimation algorithms based on the measurement of electromagnetic component parameters in EAS

    Model calculations are performed of extensive air shower (EAS) component energies using a variety of hadronic interaction parameters. A conversion factor from electromagnetic component energy to the energy of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) and its model and primary mass dependence is studied. It is shown that model dependence of the factor minimizes under the necessary condition of the same maximum position and muon content of simulated showers.Comment: contracted version is accepted for publication in Doklady Physic

    Client Satisfaction Towards Quality of Health Services: an Assessment at Primary Healthcare of District Gujranwala

    This survey designed to evaluate the satisfaction level and the factors that affect the patient satisfaction regarding health care delivery services with the aim to improve the services in the primary health care settings of Gujranwala. A Cross Sectional Study done on randomly selected patients attending the basic health units of Gujranwala, with more than18 years of age. Pretested structured "Liker scale questionnaire" was used for data collection. Out of total respondents, 62 (41.3%) clients were satisfied with the services provided by the basic health units of Gujranwala. The factors identified to determine patient satisfaction were accessibility of services, behavior of staff, health education, level of cleanliness, drug availability and miscellaneous services. Not a single ranked area of satisfaction noticed. Client\u27s occupation and income had significant relationship with the patient satisfaction level. Gender, age, and education of clients were not contributing factors; they not affect the client satisfaction level.Less than half clients were satisfied with the services provided by the basic health units.     Human agt-p.Met268thr and coronary heart disease risk: A case-control study and meta-analysis

    Summary Background. Polymorphisms in genes, which is involved in the renin–angiotensin system, play an important role in the pathogenesis of coronary heart disease (CHD). Polymorphism of c.803T>C in the human angiotensinogen gene results in methionine (M) to threonine (T) substitution at codon 268 (p.Met268Thr), which traditionally has been known as M235T. This polymorphism may contribute to cardiovascular diseases. Objectives. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between p.Met268Thr polymorphism in the angiotensinogen gene and coronary heart disease (CHD) through a case-control study, which is followed by a meta-analysis. Material and methods. In the case-control study, c.803T>C genotyping of 217 subjects (102 CHD cases vs 115 controls) was investigated by the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method. In the meta-analysis, 31 studies were included, reflecting 12,028 people with CHD and 16,362 healthy controls. Results. The data from the case-control study revealed that MT (OR, 1.875; 95%CI, 1.060–3.316; p = 0.031) and TT (OR, 3.389; 95%CI, 1.251–9.179; p = 0.016) genotypes are significantly associated with CHD. The meta-analysis revealed a significant association in the recessive model (OR, 1.156; 95%CI, 1.011–1.321; p = 0.034). Conclusions. Although the pooled OR of the meta-analysis showed that there is an increased risk of CHD conferred by p.Met268Thr of the AGT gene, this association was weak, which could be attributed to a bias in publications. © Copyright by Wydawnictwo Continuo

    Trends of research productivity across author gender and research fields: A multidisciplinary and multi-country observational study

    Bibliographic properties of more than 75 million scholarly articles, are examined and trends in overall research productivity are analysed as a function of research field (over the period of 1970-2020) and author gender (over the period of 2006-2020). Potential disruptive effects of the Covid-19 pandemic are also investigated. Over the last decade (2010-2020), the annual number of publications have invariably increased every year with the largest relative increase in a single year happening in 2019 (more than 6% relative growth). But this momentum was interrupted in 2020. Trends show that Environmental Sciences and Engineering Environmental have been the fastest growing research fields. The disruption in patterns of scholarly publication due to the Covid-19 pandemic was unevenly distributed across fields, with Computer Science, Engineering and Social Science enduring the most notable declines. The overall trends of male and female productivity indicate that, in terms of absolute number of publications, the gender gap does not seem to be closing in any country. The trends in absolute gap between male and female authors is either parallel (e.g., Canada, Australia, England, USA) or widening (e.g., majority of countries, particularly Middle Eastern countries). In terms of the ratio of female to male productivity, however, the gap is narrowing almost invariably, though at markedly different rates across countries. While some countries are nearing a ratio of .7 and are well on track for a 0.9 female to male productivity ratio, our estimates show that certain countries (particularly across the Middle East) will not reach such targets within the next 100 years. Without interventional policies, a significant gap will continue to exist in such countries. The decrease or increase in research productivity during the first year of the pandemic, in contrast to trends established before 2020, was generally parallel for male and female authors. There has been no substantial gender difference in the disruption due to the pandemic. However, opposite trends were found in a few cases. It was observed that, in some countries (e.g., The Netherlands, The United States and Germany), male productivity has been more negatively affected by the pandemic. Overall, female research productivity seems to have been more resilient to the disruptive effect of Covid-19 pandemic, although the momentum of female researchers has been negatively affected in a comparable manner to that of males

    A facile and green synthetic approach toward fabrication of alcea- and thyme-stabilized tio2 nanoparticles for photocatalytic applications

    A facile and green synthetic approach was considered for the synthesis of stabilized titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles. Extracts of Alcea and Thyme plants were used to synthesis TiO2 nanoparticles for photocatalytic applications. Evaluation of the structural and phase formation via X-ray diffraction (XRD) indicated the formation of the anatase phase of TiO2 along with the rutile phase. A desired single phase of anatase was obtained upon heating the as-synthesized samples at 500 °C for 3 h. Using the information provided by the XRD analyzer and the Debye Scherer relationship, the average crystallite size was found to be around 6 and 10 nm for the samples synthesized using Alcea and Thyme plants, respectively. To determine the elemental analysis and chemical structure, the energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyzer and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy were employed. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) indicated batches of ultrafine agglomerated particles for both samples, which their sizes grew by the heating process. The UV–visible analysis of photocatalytic properties confirmed the priority of TiO2 nanoparticles prepared with Thyme extracts

    Possibility of Using a Satellite-Based Detector for Recording Cherenkov Light from Ultrahigh-Energy Extensive Air Showers Penetrating into the Ocean Water

    We have estimated the reflected component of Cherenkov radiation, which arises in developing of an extensive air shower with primary energy of 10^20 eV over the ocean surface. It has been shown that, under conditions of the TUS experiment, a flash of the reflected Cherenkov photons at the end of the fluorescence track can be identified in showers with zenith angles up to 20 degrees.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures.
