Tomographic RF Spectroscopy of a Trapped Fermi Gas at Unitarity
We present spatially resolved radio-frequency spectroscopy of a trapped Fermi
gas with resonant interactions and observe a spectral gap at low temperatures.
The spatial distribution of the spectral response of the trapped gas is
obtained using in situ phase-contrast imaging and 3D image reconstruction. At
the lowest temperature, the homogeneous rf spectrum shows an asymmetric
excitation line shape with a peak at 0.48(4) with respect to the
free atomic line, where is the local Fermi energy
A supermassive binary black hole with triple disks
Hierarchical structure formation inevitably leads to the formation of
supermassive binary black holes (BBHs) with a sub-parsec separation in galactic
nuclei. However, to date there has been no unambiguous detection of such
systems. In an effort to search for potential observational signatures of
supermassive BBHs, we performed high-resolution smoothed particle hydrodynamics
(SPH) simulations of two black holes in a binary of moderate eccentricity
surrounded by a circumbinary disk. Building on our previous work, which has
shown that gas can periodically transfer from the circumbinary disk to the
black holes when the binary is on an eccentric orbit, the current set of
simulations focuses on the formation of the individual accretion disks, their
evolution and mutual interaction, and the predicted radiative signature. The
variation in mass transfer with orbital phase from the circumbinary disk
induces periodic variations in the light curve of the two accretion disks at
ultraviolet wavelengths, but not in the optical or near-infrared. Searches for
this signal offer a promising method to detect supermassive BBHs.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal, 16 pages, 11

Energy dissipation and violation of the fluctuation-response relation in non-equilibrium Langevin systems
The fluctuation-response relation is a fundamental relation that is
applicable to systems near equilibrium. On the other hand, when a system is
driven far from equilibrium, this relation is violated in general because the
detailed-balance condition is not satisfied in nonequilibrium systems. Even in
this case, it has been found that for a class of Langevin equations, there
exists an equality between the extent of violation of the fluctuation-response
relation in the nonequilibrium steady state and the rate of energy dissipation
from the system into the environment [T. Harada and S. -i. Sasa, Phys. Rev.
Lett. 95, 130602 (2005)]. Since this equality involves only experimentally
measurable quantities, it serves as a proposition to determine experimentally
whether the system can be described by a Langevin equation. Furthermore, the
contribution of each degree of freedom to the rate of energy dissipation can be
determined based on this equality. In this paper, we present a comprehensive
description on this equality, and provide a detailed derivation for various
types of models including many-body systems, Brownian motor models,
time-dependent systems, and systems with multiple heat reservoirs.Comment: 18 pages, submitted to Phys. Rev.
An X-Ray Microlensing Test of AU-Scale Accretion Disk Structure in Q2237+0305
The innermost regions of quasars can be resolved by a gravitational-lens
{\lq}telescope{\rq} on scales down to a few AU. For the purpose, X-ray
observations are most preferable, because X-rays originating from the innermost
regions, can be selectively amplified by microlensing due to the so-called
`caustic crossing'. If detected, X-ray variations will constrain the size of
the X-ray emitting region down to a few AU. The maximum attainable resolution
depends mainly on the monitoring intervals of lens events, which should be much
shorter than the crossing time. On the basis of this idea, we performe
numerical simulations of microlensing of an optically-thick, standard-type disk
as well as an optically-thin, advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF).
Calculated spectral variations and light curves show distinct behaviors,
depending on the photon energy. X-ray radiation which is produced in optically
thin region, exhibits intensity variation over a few tens of days. In contrast,
optical-UV fluxes, which are likely to come from optically thick region,
exhibit more gradual light changes, which is consistent with the microlensing
events so far observed in Q2237+0305.
Currently, Q2237+0305 is being monitored in the optical range at Apache Point
Observatory. Simultaneous multi-wavelength observations by X-ray sattelites
(e.g., ASCA, AXAF, XMM) as well as HST at the moment of a microlens event
enable us to reveal an AU scale structure of the central accretion disk around
black hole.Comment: 10 pages LaTeX, 3 figures, accepted to ApJ Letter. e-mail:

Lorentz invariant and supersymmetric interpretation of noncommutative quantum field theory
In this paper, using a Hopf-algebraic method, we construct deformed
Poincar\'e SUSY algebra in terms of twisted (Hopf) algebra. By adapting this
twist deformed super-Poincar\'e algrebra as our fundamental symmetry, we can
see the consistency between the algebra and non(anti)commutative relation among
(super)coordinates and interpret that symmetry of non(anti)commutative QFT is
in fact twisted one. The key point is validity of our new twist element that
guarantees non(anti)commutativity of space. It is checked in this paper for N=1
case. We also comment on the possibility of noncommutative central charge
coordinate. Finally, because our twist operation does not break the original
algebra, we can claim that (twisted) SUSY is not broken in contrast to the
string inspired SUSY in N=1 non(anti)commutative superspace.Comment: 15 pages, LaTeX. v3:One section added, typos corrected, to appear in

Supersymmetric Axion-Neutrino Merger
The recently proposed supersymmetric model of the neutrino mass matrix
is modified to merge with a previously proposed axionic solution of the strong
CP problem. The resulting model has only one input scale, i.e. that of
symmetry breaking, which determines both the seesaw neutrino mass scale and the
axion decay constant. It also solves the problem and conserves R parity
automatically.Comment: 7 pages, no figur
Observation of Phase Separation in a Strongly-Interacting Imbalanced Fermi Gas
We have observed phase separation between the superfluid and the normal
component in a strongly interacting Fermi gas with imbalanced spin populations.
The in situ distribution of the density difference between two trapped spin
components is obtained using phase-contrast imaging and 3D image
reconstruction. A shell structure is clearly identified where the superfluid
region of equal densities is surrounded by a normal gas of unequal densities.
The phase transition induces a dramatic change in the density profiles as
excess fermions are expelled from the superfluid.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figure
Avatars:the other side of Proteus's mirror : a study into avatar choice regarding perception
The trend for online interactions, can be regarded as being ‘anti-so-cially social’, meaning that a great deal of time is spent playing, working and socializing with the internet serving as the communication conduit. Within that Virtual Social Environment very deep relationships are formed and maintained without the parties ever having met each other face-to-face. Raising the question how much does the physical appearance of an avatar influence the perception of the person behind it? Are relationships informed by appearance even in the vir-tual world and what implications does that have for second language acquisition? This paper leads to a small-scale research project where a selection of avatars with various racially identifiable characteristics were used to identify which av-atars a second language speaker would feel more at ease interacting with in the target language. The resultant research aims to test three hypotheses regarding preferred avatar choice for second language users based solely on perceptions
