Alternative Dispute Resolution in India - ADR: status/effectiveness study
This study focuses on the effectiveness of Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanisms in India. The broad targets included (a) a comparative analysis of institutional ADRs and ad-hoc ADR, (b) cost and time benefit analysis of ADRs in comparison with adjudication through courts; (c) study of the effectiveness of pre-trial mediation centres; and (e) to make concrete suggestions. The study proves that ADR in India has not been that effective when compared to adjudication through courts. The report favored institutional ADRs given the high rate of corruption and bureaucratic hitches prevalent in ad-hoc ADRs. The study also found that pre-trial mediation centres were developing in the right track

Quantization of the Riemann Zeta-Function and Cosmology
Quantization of the Riemann zeta-function is proposed. We treat the Riemann
zeta-function as a symbol of a pseudodifferential operator and study the
corresponding classical and quantum field theories. This approach is motivated
by the theory of p-adic strings and by recent works on stringy cosmological
models. We show that the Lagrangian for the zeta-function field is equivalent
to the sum of the Klein-Gordon Lagrangians with masses defined by the zeros of
the Riemann zeta-function. Quantization of the mathematics of Fermat-Wiles and
the Langlands program is indicated. The Beilinson conjectures on the values of
L-functions of motives are interpreted as dealing with the cosmological
constant problem. Possible cosmological applications of the zeta-function field
theory are discussed.Comment: 14 pages, corrected typos, references and comments adde
Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) of the Internal Transcribed Spacer 1 (ITS1) region of cutaneous leishmaniasis causing Leishmania donovani in Sri Lanka
Objectives: To isolate PCR quality DNA from punch biopsy samples of 35 suspected cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) lesions, carry out Internal Transcribed Spacer 1 (ITS1) PCR, analyse Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP), sequence of ITS1 region of 10 randomly selected patient samples and to determine the genetic variation among the causative parasites. Methods: Punch biopsies (3mm) from CL lesions (n=35) were taken and stored in NET buffer at -20C. DNA was extracted using a commercially available kit. ITS1 PCR was carried out using previously described primers. PCR products were digested with Haelll, run in a 1.7 % ethidium bromide gel and visualized under UV light. Same ITS1 PCR products of 10 randomly selected samples were sequenced commercially. Analysis of sequences was carried out with CLUSTALW2 multiple sequence analyzing software. Results: All 35 CL samples showed the same Leishmania donovani ITS1 RFLP pattern. The BLAST search confirmed that the 10 sequenced Sri Lankan strains belong to L. donovani. Multiple sequences analysis showed that Sri Lankan L. donovani strains are highly homogenous in the ITS1 regions. However, the Sri Lankan strains showed, few indels in the ITS1 region when compared with the L. donovani ITS1 sequences originated from India, Sudan and Ethiopia. Conclusions: Cutaneous leishmaniasis in Sri Lanka is still caused only by L. donovani and ITS1 region of the L. donovani strain of Sri Lankan origin is highly homogenous and conserved
Association of dopamine receptor polymorphisms with schizophrenia and antipsychotic response in a South Indian population
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Alterations in the dopamine transmission and receptor density are hypothesized in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia but ethnic disparities are reported to exist in disease association and therapeutic response to psychotropic medication. Antipsychotics have higher binding affinity to D2 subtype of dopamine receptor. DRD2 Cys311, TaqIB1 and TaqIA1 variants are considered to have either reduced affinity for dopamine and hypo-dopaminergic activity.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We examined the role of Taq1B, Taq1D, S311C, H313H and Taq1A polymorphisms of DRD2 gene in schizophrenia and antipsychotic treatment response in 213 patients and 196 controls from a homogenous South Indian population. A more detailed genotype phenotype association analysis was carried out to understand the disease in terms of its socio-cultural factors.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>H313HTT genotype was found to be associated with schizophrenia (P = 0.004) while TaqIB1B1 genotype was significantly associated with higher psychopathology score. When treatment response was considered H313HCC, TaqIA2A2 and Taq1D1D1 had higher mean improvement scores. TaqID1D1 and H313HTT genotype were found to be significantly higher in responders than in nonresponder group. Distinct shift in the LD patterns of responder and non-responder group was observed. Certain symptoms were characteristic of our patient population. Following medication the scores and presentation of these symptoms tend to vary in the responder and non-responder groups.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Based on genotype phenotype correlations it can be suggested that certain polymorphisms can be defined for their critical functions in disease and their role in treatment response in South Indian population. The present study suggests that in addition to ethnic bias, socio-cultural factors should also be considered while evaluating genotype phenotype correlations, in association and treatment response to complex disorders like schizophrenia.</p
Superposition in nonlinear wave and evolution equations
Real and bounded elliptic solutions suitable for applying the Khare-Sukhatme
superposition procedure are presented and used to generate superposition
solutions of the generalized modified Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation (gmKPE)

Recent Developments of World-Line Monte Carlo Methods
World-line quantum Monte Carlo methods are reviewed with an emphasis on
breakthroughs made in recent years. In particular, three algorithms -- the loop
algorithm, the worm algorithm, and the directed-loop algorithm -- for updating
world-line configurations are presented in a unified perspective. Detailed
descriptions of the algorithms in specific cases are also given.Comment: To appear in Journal of Physical Society of Japa
Dimensional Reduction of Fermions in Brane Worlds of the Gross-Neveu Model
We study the dimensional reduction of fermions, both in the symmetric and in
the broken phase of the 3-d Gross-Neveu model at large N. In particular, in the
broken phase we construct an exact solution for a stable brane world consisting
of a domain wall and an anti-wall. A left-handed 2-d fermion localized on the
domain wall and a right-handed fermion localized on the anti-wall communicate
with each other through the 3-d bulk. In this way they are bound together to
form a Dirac fermion of mass m. As a consequence of asymptotic freedom of the
2-d Gross-Neveu model, the 2-d correlation length \xi = 1/m increases
exponentially with the brane separation. Hence, from the low-energy point of
view of a 2-d observer, the separation of the branes appears very small and the
world becomes indistinguishable from a 2-d space-time. Our toy model provides a
mechanism for brane stabilization: branes made of fermions may be stable due to
their baryon asymmetry. Ironically, our brane world is stable only if it has an
extreme baryon asymmetry with all states in this ``world'' being completely
filled.Comment: 26 pages, 7 figure
Machine-Part cell formation through visual decipherable clustering of Self Organizing Map
Machine-part cell formation is used in cellular manufacturing in order to
process a large variety, quality, lower work in process levels, reducing
manufacturing lead-time and customer response time while retaining flexibility
for new products. This paper presents a new and novel approach for obtaining
machine cells and part families. In the cellular manufacturing the fundamental
problem is the formation of part families and machine cells. The present paper
deals with the Self Organising Map (SOM) method an unsupervised learning
algorithm in Artificial Intelligence, and has been used as a visually
decipherable clustering tool of machine-part cell formation. The objective of
the paper is to cluster the binary machine-part matrix through visually
decipherable cluster of SOM color-coding and labelling via the SOM map nodes in
such a way that the part families are processed in that machine cells. The
Umatrix, component plane, principal component projection, scatter plot and
histogram of SOM have been reported in the present work for the successful
visualization of the machine-part cell formation. Computational result with the
proposed algorithm on a set of group technology problems available in the
literature is also presented. The proposed SOM approach produced solutions with
a grouping efficacy that is at least as good as any results earlier reported in
the literature and improved the grouping efficacy for 70% of the problems and
found immensely useful to both industry practitioners and researchers.Comment: 18 pages,3 table, 4 figure
The instanton liquid in QCD at zero and finite temperature
In this paper we study the statistical mechanics of the instanton liquid in
QCD. After introducing the partition function as well as the gauge field and
quark induced interactions between instantons we describe a method to calculate
the free energy of the instanton system. We use this method to determine the
equilibrium density and the equation of state from numerical simulations of the
instanton ensemble in QCD for various numbers of flavors. We find that there is
a critical number of flavors above which chiral symmetry is restored in the
groundstate. In the physical case of two light and one intermediate mass flavor
the system undergoes a chiral phase transition at MeV. We show
that the mechanism for this transition is a rearrangement of the instanton
liquid, going from a disordered, random, phase at low temperatures to a
strongly correlated, molecular, phase at high temperature. We also study the
behavior of mesonic susceptibilities near the phase transition.Comment: 50 pages, revtex, 16 figures, uuencode
