Origin of Pure Spin Superradiance
The question addressed in this paper is: What originates pure spin
superradiance in a polarized spin system placed inside a resonator? The term
"pure" means that no initial coherence is imposed on spins, and its appearance
manifests a purely self-organized collective effect. The consideration is based
on a microscopic model with dipole spin interactions. An accurate solution of
evolution equations is given. The results show that the resonator Nyquist noise
does not play, contrary to the common belief, any role in starting spin
superradiance, but the emergence of the latter is initiated by local spin

Genetic alterations on chromosome 16 and 17 are important features of ductal carcinoma in situ of the breast and are associated with histologic type
We analysed the involvement of known and putative tumour suppressor- and oncogene loci in ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) by microsatellite analysis (LOH), Southern blotting and comparative genomic hybridization (CGH). A total of 78 pure DCIS cases, classified histologically as well, intermediately and poorly differentiated, were examined for LOH with 76 markers dispersed along all chromosome arms. LOH on chromosome 17 was more frequent in poorly differentiated DCIS (70%) compared to well-differentiated DCIS (17%), whereas loss on chromosome 16 was associated with well- and intermediately differentiated DCIS (66%). For a subset we have done Southern blot- and CGH analysis. C-erbB2/neu was amplified in 30% of poorly differentiated DCIS. No amplification was found of c-myc, mdm2, bek, flg and the epidermal growth factor (EGF)-receptor. By CGH, most frequent alterations in poorly differentiated DCIS were gains on 8q and 17q22–24 and deletion on 17p, whereas in well-differentiated DCIS amplification on chromosome 1q and deletion on 16q were found. In conclusion, our data indicates that inactivation of a yet unknown tumour suppressor gene on chromosome 16q is implicated in the development of most well and intermediately differentiated DCIS whereas amplification and inactivation of various genes on chromosome 17 are implicated in the development of poorly differentiated DCIS. Furthermore these data show that there is a genetic basis for the classification of DCIS in a well and poorly differentiated type and support the evidence of different genetic routes to develop a specific type of carcinoma in situ of the breast. © 1999 Cancer Research Campaig
On Virtual Displacement and Virtual Work in Lagrangian Dynamics
The confusion and ambiguity encountered by students, in understanding virtual
displacement and virtual work, is discussed in this article. A definition of
virtual displacement is presented that allows one to express them explicitly
for holonomic (velocity independent), non-holonomic (velocity dependent),
scleronomous (time independent) and rheonomous (time dependent) constraints. It
is observed that for holonomic, scleronomous constraints, the virtual
displacements are the displacements allowed by the constraints. However, this
is not so for a general class of constraints. For simple physical systems, it
is shown that, the work done by the constraint forces on virtual displacements
is zero. This motivates Lagrange's extension of d'Alembert's principle to
system of particles in constrained motion. However a similar zero work
principle does not hold for the allowed displacements. It is also demonstrated
that d'Alembert's principle of zero virtual work is necessary for the
solvability of a constrained mechanical problem. We identify this special class
of constraints, physically realized and solvable, as {\it the ideal
constraints}. The concept of virtual displacement and the principle of zero
virtual work by constraint forces are central to both Lagrange's method of

E-cadherin inactivation in lobular carcinoma in situ of the breast: an early event in tumorigenesis.
In breast cancer, inactivating point mutations in the E-cadherin gene are frequently found in invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) but never in invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC). Lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) adjacent to ILC has previously been shown to lack E-cadherin expression, but whether LCIS without adjacent invasive carcinoma also lacks E-cadherin expression and whether the gene mutations present in ILC are already present in LCIS is not known. We report here that E-cadherin expression is absent in six cases of LCIS and present in 150 cases of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), both without an adjacent invasive component. Furthermore, using mutation analysis, we could demonstrate the presence of the same truncating mutations and loss of heterozygosity (LOH) of the wild-type E-cadherin in the LCIS component and in the adjacent ILC. Our results indicate that E-cadherin is a very early target gene in lobular breast carcinogenesis and plays a tumour-suppressive role, additional to the previously suggested invasion-suppressive role
Bose-Fermi variational theory of the BEC-Tonks crossover
A number-conserving hybrid Bose-Fermi variational theory is developed and
applied to investigation of the BEC-Tonks gas crossover in toroidal and long
cylindrical traps of high aspect ratio, where strong many-body correlations and

Remarks on Shannon's Statistical Inference and the Second Law in Quantum Statistical Mechanics
We comment on a formulation of quantum statistical mechanics, which
incorporates the statistical inference of Shannon.
Our basic idea is to distinguish the dynamical entropy of von Neumann, , in terms of the density matrix ,
and the statistical amount of uncertainty of Shannon, , with in the representation where the total
energy and particle numbers are diagonal. These quantities satisfy the
inequality . We propose to interprete Shannon's statistical inference
as specifying the {\em initial conditions} of the system in terms of . A
definition of macroscopic observables which are characterized by intrinsic time
scales is given, and a quantum mechanical condition on the system, which
ensures equilibrium, is discussed on the basis of time averaging.
An interesting analogy of the change of entroy with the running coupling in
renormalization group is noted. A salient feature of our approach is that the
distinction between statistical aspects and dynamical aspects of quantum

A stopped Delta-Matter Source in Heavy Ion Collisions at 10 GeV/n
We predict the formation of highly dense baryon-rich resonance matter in
Au+Au collisions at AGS energies. The final pion yields show observable signs
for resonance matter. The Delta(1232) resonance is predicted to be the dominant
source for pions of small transverse momenta. Rescattering effects --
consecutive excitation and deexcitation of Deltas -- lead to a long apparent
lifetime (> 10 fm/c) and rather large volumina (several 100 fm^3) of the
Delta-matter state. Heavier baryon resonances prove to be crucial for reaction

Kurt Symanzik - a stable fixed point beyond triviality
In 1970 Kurt Symanzik proposed a "precarious" phi**4-theory with a negative
quartic coupling constant as a valid candidate for an asymptotically free
theory of strong interactions. Symanzik's deep insight in the non-trivial
properties of this theory has been overruled since then by the Hermitian
intuition of generations of scientists, who considered or consider this
actually non-Hermitian highly important theory to be unstable. This short -
certainly controversial - communication tries to shed some light on the
historical and formalistic context of Symanzik's theory in order to sharpen our
(quantum) intuition about non-perturbative theoretical physics between

Evaluation of the influence of kyphosis and scoliosis on intervertebral disc extrusion in French bulldogs
Although thoracic vertebral malformations with kyphosis and scoliosis are often considered incidental findings on diagnostic imaging studies of screw-tailed brachycephalic breeds, they have been suggested to interfere with spinal biomechanics and intervertebral disc degeneration. It is however unknown if an abnormal spinal curvature also predisposes dogs to develop clinically relevant intervertebral disc herniations. The aim of this study was to evaluate if the occurrence of thoracic vertebral malformations, kyphosis or scoliosis would be associated with a higher prevalence of cervical or thoracolumbar intervertebral disc extrusion in French bulldogs
