    Assessing uncertainty in radar measurements on simplified meteorological scenarios

    A three-dimensional radar simulator model (RSM) developed by Haase (1998) is coupled with the nonhydrostatic mesoscale weather forecast model Lokal-Modell (LM). The radar simulator is able to model reflectivity measurements by using the following meteorological fields, generated by Lokal Modell, as inputs: temperature, pressure, water vapour content, cloud water content, cloud ice content, rain sedimentation flux and snow sedimentation flux. This work focuses on the assessment of some uncertainty sources associated with radar measurements: </p><ol> <li>absorption by the atmospheric gases, e.g., molecular oxygen, water vapour, and nitrogen; </li> <li>attenuation due to the presence of a highly reflecting structure between the radar and a &quot;target structure&quot;. </li> </ol> RSM results for a simplified meteorological scenario, consisting of a humid updraft on a flat surface and four cells placed around it, are presented

    The Evolution of Current Concept of the Reconstructive Ladder in Plastic Surgery: The Emerging Role of Translational Medicine

    Plastic surgeons have used the reconstructive ladder for many decades as a standard directory for complex trauma reconstruction with the goal of repairing body structures and restoring functionality. This consists of different surgical maneuvers, such as secondary intention and direct tissue closure, as well as more complex methods such as local tissue transfer and free flap. The reconstructive ladder represents widely known options achievable for tissue reconstruction and wound closure that puts at the bottom rung the simplest methods of reconstruction and strengthens the complexity by moving upward. Regenerative medicine and surgery constitute a quickly spreading area of translational research that can be employed by minimally invasive surgical strategies, with the aim of regenerating cells and tissues in vivo in order to reestablish normal function through the intrinsic potential of cells, in combination with biomaterials and appropriate biochemical stimuli. These translational procedures have the aim of creating an appropriate microenvironment capable of supporting the physiological cellular function to generate the desired cells or tissues and to generate parenchymal, stromal, and vascular components on demand, and above all to produce intelligent materials capable of determining the fate of cells. Smart technologies have been grown that give extra “rungs” on the classic reconstructive ladder to integrate a more holistic, patient-based approach with improved outcomes. This commentary presents the evolution of the traditional concept of the reconstructive ladder in the field of plastic surgery into a new course with the aim of achieving excellent results for soft tissue reconstruction by applying innovative technologies and biologically active molecules for a wide range of surgical diseases

    Flavor-Changing Processes in Extended Technicolor

    We analyze constraints on a class of extended technicolor (ETC) models from neutral flavor-changing processes induced by (dimension-six) four-fermion operators. The ETC gauge group is taken to commute with the standard-model gauge group. The models in the class are distinguished by how the left- and right-handed (L,R)(L,R) components of the quarks and charged leptons transform under the ETC group. We consider K0Kˉ0K^{0} - \bar K^0 and other pseudoscalar meson mixings, and conclude that they are adequately suppressed if the LL and RR components of the relevant quarks are assigned to the same (fundamental or conjugate-fundamental) representation of the ETC group. Models in which the LL and RR components of the down-type quarks are assigned to relatively conjugate representations, while they can lead to realistic CKM mixing and intra-family mass splittings, do not adequately suppress these mixing processes. We identify an approximate global symmetry that elucidates these behavioral differences and can be used to analyze other possible representation assignments. Flavor-changing decays, involving quarks and/or leptons, are adequately suppressed for any ETC-representation assignment of the LL and RR components of the quarks, as well as the leptons.     Efecto de la temperatura y la precipitación durante el llenado de grano sobre la dormición y sensibilidad al agua en granos de cebada (Hordeum vulgare L.)

Mención: Tecnología de Semillas) -- UNC- Facultad de Ciencias Agropecuarias, 2020Los granos de cebada (Hordeum vulgare L.) pueden presentar dormición y sensibilidad al agua poscosecha, que retrasan su utilización industrial. Ambas, dependen del genotipo y del ambiente durante la maduración del grano. Con el fin de analizar el efecto de la temperatura media y las precipitaciones acumuladas durante y en el tercio final del llenado de grano, sobre la dormición y la sensibilidad al agua y la relación entre ellas, tres cultivares de cebada fueron sembrados en cuatro fechas en 2009 y dos fechas en 2011. Se registraron temperaturas medias y precipitaciones diarias desde antesis a madurez fisiológica. La dormición se evaluó como la germinación a los 12 días pos-madurez fisiológica y la sensibilidad al agua como la germinación en exceso de agua, a los 100 días pos-madurez fisiológica. Las variables que se relacionaron con la germinación y sensibilidad al agua fueron la temperatura media y las precipitaciones acumuladas durante el llenado de grano. Ambientes con mayores temperaturas medias durante el llenado de grano disminuyeron la dormición, no así la sensibilidad al agua, cuya variación dependió del cultivar. El incremento de las precipitaciones durante el llenado de grano disminuyó la dormición, pero aumentó la sensibilidad al agua en los tres cultivares.After harvesting, barley grains (Hordeum vulgare L.) can show dormancy and water sensitivity, which delays industrial use. Both effects depend on the barley genotype and environmental conditions during grain maturation. In order to analyze the effect of the average temperature and the total rainfall accumulated during and in the final third of the grain filling, on the dormancy and water sensitivity and the relationship between them, three barley cultivars were sowing on four dates in 2009 and two dates in 2011. Mean temperature and daily rainfall were recorded from anthesis to physiological maturity. Dormancy was evaluated as germination at 12 days post physiological maturity and the water sensitivity as germination in water excess conditions at 100 days post physiological maturity. The variables that presented correlation with germination and water sensitivity were average temperature and accumulated rainfall during grain maturity. Environments with average high temperature during grain filling, reduced dormancy, but water sensitivity decrease, was cultivar dependent.     The role of aqp3 in amnion cells exposed to an osmotic stress

    INTRODUCTION: AQPs in fetal membranes have been proposed to regulate the amniotic fluid volume. Altered expression of these proteins might be associated with oligo and polyhydramnios syndromes. However, we recently observed that the blocking of AQP3 did not prevent cell swelling in amnion cells. In addition, under osmotic stress the pattern expression of amnion AQP3 was different from other AQPs, suggesting a different role for this protein. OBJETIVE: To study the regulation of AQP3 and its role in the amnion.METHODS: Amnion-derived WISH cells were cultured in hypo (150 mOsm) and hyperosmolar (400 mOsm) conditions. Levels of phosphorylated ERK (pERK), JUNK (pJNK) and p38 (p-p38) were studied. Nf-ĸB and tonEBP expressions were assessed in nuclear and cytosolic fractions. AQP3 expression was analyzed after the inhibition of Nf-ĸB and tonEBP pathways with Sodium Salicylate and Cyclosporine-A, respectively. Cell viability was studied by MTT assay. Apoptosis was studied by TUNEL assay and Bax/Bcl-2 ratio after the inhibition of AQP3 using CuSO4 or the specific siRNA. RESULTS: pERK levels increased in hyperosmolarity and did not change in hypoosmolarity (p<0.001; n=6). No significant differences were observed in p-p38 and pJNK (ns; n=6). Nf-ĸB and tonEBP expressions increased in nuclear fraction only in hyperosmolarity (p<0.05; n=5; p<0.01; n=5). In this condition, the blocking of Nf-ĸB pathway increased AQP3 expression (p<0.001; n=5) compared to controls, while the inhibition of tonEBP pathway did not modify its expression. Regarding cell viability in hiperosmolarity, the blocking of AQP3 decreased MTT incorporation (p<0.01; n=8). Moreover, Bax/Bcl-2 ratio and the number of apoptotic nuclei increased after CuSO4 treatment (p<0.001; n=5; p<0.001; n=9) and AQP3 silencing (p<0.05; n=5; p<0.01; n=10).CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that AQP3 may have an important role in the survival of the amniotic cells and its expression may be regulated by ERK, Nf-ĸB and tonEBP pathways.Fil: Di Paola, Mauricio Adriel.     A hydrological analysis of the 4 November 2011 event in Genoa

    On the 4 November 2011 a flash flood event hit the area of Genoa with dramatic consequences. Such an event represents, from the meteorological and hydrological perspective, a paradigm of flash floods in the Mediterranean environment. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt; The hydro-meteorological probabilistic forecasting system for small and medium size catchments in use at the Civil Protection Centre of Liguria region exhibited excellent performances for the event, by predicting, 24–48 h in advance, the potential level of risk associated with the forecast. It greatly helped the decision makers in issuing a timely and correct alert. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt; In this work we present the operational outputs of the system provided during the Liguria events and the post event hydrological modelling analysis that has been carried out accounting also for the crowd sourcing information and data. We discuss the benefit of the implemented probabilistic systems for decision-making under uncertainty, highlighting how, in this case, the multi-catchment approach used for predicting floods in small basins has been crucial

    Use of training with BCI (Brain Computer Interface) in the management of impulsivity

    Impulsivity represents one of the risk factors strongly related to dependent behavior in subjects with a diagnosis of substance dependence. The risk appetite, in particular, represents a construct connected with other components such as jumping to conclusion and risk taking.There are several forms of treatment used with subjects who have problems related to impulsivity. A good part of these is aimed at subjects with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), in the form of training or exercises implemented on software. This work aims to evaluate the use of training for concentration, attention and meditation on reducing risk appetite. The experimental design, of a pre-post type, involves assessing the risk appetite before and after training, to be carried out in six sessions over two weeks. The comparison between the experimental group and the control groups showed significant efficacy in reducing the levels of impulsivity in subjects with addiction.This work represents a pilot study on the possible use of meditation, concentration, and training exercises and demonstrates how these can be considered as excellent forms of training for the reduction of impulsiveness and risk appetite, showing their feasibility in the contexts of intervention and cure for addictions

    The Impact of COVID-19 on Plastic Surgery Residency Training

    Abstract: Nowadays didactic and surgical activities for residents in the surgery field are less and less due to an increasing burden of documentation and \u201cnon-educational work.\u201d Considering the current lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it has never been so important to find different ways to allow residents to improve their knowledge. We asked all plastic and esthetic surgery residents in our country to fill out a questionnaire to investigate changes in their didactical activity and analyze problems about their professional growth in the last few months. From the results of such questionnaires, we found that most of the residents feel the decrease in surgical activities during this time is a detrimental factor for their training and that even if all the schools have changed their didactical activities no school has introduced the use of virtual simulators to compensate for the decrease in surgical practice. Actually, the majority of residents use webinars to keep updated, stating that such technologies are useful but not sufficient to analyze plastic surgery topics in depth during COVID-19 lockdown. Virtual interactive tools are well known in different clinical and surgical specialties, and they are considered as a valid support, but it seems that in plastic surgery they are not so used. According to the most recent studies about residents\u2019 didactical program, we have investigated the potential of Anatomage Table in combination with Touch Surgery application as physical and mental aids to bypass the decreased number and kind of surgical interventions performed in this particular time. Anatomage is an academic user-friendly touch screen table; it is used by both medical students and residents to learn human anatomy and to master surgical anatomy. Touch Surgery is an application available on smartphones and tablets that gives the possibility to watch real and virtually designed surgical videos, accompanied by explanatory comments on the surgical phases; they are interactive and give the possibility to check what you have learned through tests administered after virtual classes. In our opinion, these tools represent reliable solutions to improve plastic residents\u2019 training, mostly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
