An Evaluation of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) As a Modern Trend in English Language Teaching (ELT)

English Language Teaching (ELT) has come a long way, moving from grammatical or linguistic approach to communicative approach (which ESP is all about). This study looked into the origin, and development of ELT, the concept of English for specific purposes (ESP) as an approach to language teaching, and the differences between ESP and General English. Effort was also made at highlighting the steps in this modern trend in ELT which distinguishes from other trends, ranging from needs analysis, statement of goals and objectives of the language course, converting the needs into syllabus, and the evaluation of the teaching process. ESP was shown as a learner/learning-centred approach to the English language pedagogy

Listening Effectively For Results in an ESL/EFL Classroom.

Unlike writing and speaking, the listening skill is often overlooked probably because they are hard to observe and measure. Children and students are expected to listen but are never taught to listen as they are taught to speak, read and write. This negligence has contributed a lot to students' poor performance in schools and a breakdown in everyday communication. This study tries to differentiate between hearing and listening; looks into the different listening styles exhibited by people; gives reasons why people are poor listeners and how to develop effective listening habit. It also states what an ideal listening process ought to be; what people listen to and how to improve listening through active and critical listening. Nigerian Foreign Policy Under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1979)

It is proposed to divide this paper into two main parts. The first part will be concerned with a review of the philosophies that formerly underlined Nigeria\u27s international activities, in other words, the foreign policy objectives enunciated by the country\u27s leaders on the eve of independence in 1960. By so doing, it is intended to ascertain to what extent there has been a shift from old practices in the foreign policy of the country. The second part will attempt to analyze the statements and/or provisions concerning Nigerian foreign policy contained in the 1979 Presidential Constitution. Finally, an attempt will be made to recommend some positive measures which will help Nigeria seize and maintain the initiative in African affairs as well as make a significant impact on world affairs
