GPs' views on new national smoking cessation guidelines

    Get PDF
Objectives: To assess GPs? views on recently published national smoking cessation guidelines that form the foundation of the government?s smoking cessation strategy.Design: Postal survey of a random sample of GPs. GPs were asked to judge the appropriateness, effectiveness and practicability of key recommendations for primary care in recent national smoking cessation guidelines.Setting: General practice, England and Wales.Subjects: 236 GPs, effective response rate: 62%.Results: Only 16% of GPs accepted that all the recommendations in the guidelines were appropriate; 43% accepted that it was appropriate to check the smoking status of known smokers when they visit the surgery and only 30% thought it was practicable to advise smokers to stop at every opportunity. However, 77% of GPs thought that they should provide assistance for smokers wanting to stop; 74% believed that they should refer smokers to specialist services if appropriate and a similar proportion (77%) believed that it was appropriate to recommend nicotine replacement. Conclusions: Recommendations that involved the GP being proactive in monitoring smoking status and advising smokers to stop were not widely supported. There was greater acceptance that GPs should assist smokers wanting to stop, either by recommending NRT or providing counselling or referral. It appears that GPs do not widely support those recommendations that would produce the greatest public health gains

Markov chain Monte Carlo analysis of Bianchi VII_h models

We have extended the analysis of Jaffe et al. to a complete Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) study of the Bianchi type VIIh{\rm VII_h} models including a dark energy density, using 1-year and 3-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. Since we perform the analysis in a Bayesian framework our entire inference is contained in the multidimensional posterior distribution from which we can extract marginalised parameter constraints and the comparative Bayesian evidence. Treating the left-handed Bianchi CMB anisotropy as a template centred upon the `cold-spot' in the southern hemisphere, the parameter estimates derived for the total energy density, `tightness' and vorticity from 3-year data are found to be: Ωtot=0.43±0.04\Omega_{tot} = 0.43\pm 0.04, h=0.32−0.13+0.02h = 0.32^{+0.02}_{-0.13}, ω=9.7−1.5+1.6×10−10\omega = 9.7^{+1.6}_{-1.5}\times 10^{-10} with orientation γ=337∘−23+17\gamma = {337^{\circ}}^{+17}_{-23}). This template is preferred by a factor of roughly unity in log-evidence over a concordance cosmology alone. A Bianchi type template is supported by the data only if its position on the sky is heavily restricted. The low total energy density of the preferred template, implies a geometry that is incompatible with cosmologies inferred from recent CMB observations. Jaffe et al. found that extending the Bianchi model to include a term in ΩΛ\Omega_{\Lambda} creates a degeneracy in the Ωm−ΩΛ\Omega_m - \Omega_{\Lambda} plane. We explore this region fully by MCMC and find that the degenerate likelihood contours do not intersect areas of parameter space that 1 or 3 year WMAP data would prefer at any significance above 2σ2\sigma. Thus we can confirm that a physical Bianchi VIIh{\rm VII_h} model is not responsible for this signature.Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures, significant update to include more accurate results and conclusions to match version accepted by MNRA

Fast directional continuous spherical wavelet transform algorithms

We describe the construction of a spherical wavelet analysis through the inverse stereographic projection of the Euclidean planar wavelet framework, introduced originally by Antoine and Vandergheynst and developed further by Wiaux et al. Fast algorithms for performing the directional continuous wavelet analysis on the unit sphere are presented. The fast directional algorithm, based on the fast spherical convolution algorithm developed by Wandelt and Gorski, provides a saving of O(sqrt(Npix)) over a direct quadrature implementation for Npix pixels on the sphere, and allows one to perform a directional spherical wavelet analysis of a 10^6 pixel map on a personal computer.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, replaced to match version accepted by IEEE Trans. Magnetic structure, phase diagram, and a new type of spin-flop transition dominated by higher order interaction in a localized 5f system U3Pd20Si6

    Get PDF
The magnetic structure of the localized-5f uranium intermetallic compound U3Pd20Si6 has been determined by means of a neutron diffraction experiment. Our data demonstrate that this compound has a collinear coupling of the sublattice ordering of the uranium spins on the 4a and 8c sites. We conclude that higher-order exchange and/or quadrupole interactions are necessary to stabilize this unique collinear structure. We discovered a new type of spin-flop transition against the uniaxial anisotropy induced by this collinear coupling

Ultrasound Investigations of Orbital Quadrupolar Ordering in UPd_3

For a high-quality single crystal of UPd_3 we present the relevant elastic constants and ultrasonic attenuation data. In addition to the magnetic phase transition at T_2=4.4 +/- 0.1K and the quadrupolar transition at T_1~6.8K, we find orbital ordering at T_0=7.6 +/- 0.1K concomitant with a symmetry change from hexagonal to orthorhombic. A striking feature is the splitting of the phase transition at T_1 into a second-order transition at T_{+1}=6.9 +/- 0.05K and a first-order transition at T_{-1}=6.7 +/- 0.05K. For the four phase transitions, the quadrupolar order parameters and the respective symmetry changes are specified.Comment: 14 pages (RevTex), 3 eps-figures, accepted by PR

A Combination Atmospheric Pressure LC/MS:GC/MS Ion Source: Advantages of Dual AP-LC/MS:GC/MS Instrumentation

    Get PDF
Modification of commercial LC/MS instrumentation to allow both atmospheric pressure (AP) LC/MS and GC/MS is described. Advantages of this additional capability versus LC/MS alone include higher chromatographic resolution in the GC versus LC mode, greater peak capacity for complex mixture analysis, higher sensitivity for a variety of volatile compounds, and the ability to observe compounds of low polarity that are not readily observed in LC/MS. Advantages over conventional GC/MS include the ability to use higher carrier gas flow and shorter columns for passing less volatile materials through the gas chromatograph, selective ionization, and rapid switching between positive and negative ion modes. Other advantages include application of the enhanced capabilities of LC/MS instrumentation to GC/MS analyses such as cone voltage fragmentation, MSn, high mass resolution, and accurate mass measurement. Limitations of APGC/MS include the inability to observe saturated hydrocarbon and certain other highly nonpolar compounds and less odd-electron fragmentation for computer aided library searching. For some analyses, the limitation related to ionization of highly nonpolar compounds is advantageous, as is the simplified mass spectrum and easy molecular weight identification that results from less fragmentation observed in the AP ionization mode

Spherical Needlets for CMB Data Analysis

We discuss Spherical Needlets and their properties. Needlets are a form of spherical wavelets which do not rely on any kind of tangent plane approximation and enjoy good localization properties in both pixel and harmonic space; moreover needlets coefficients are asymptotically uncorrelated at any fixed angular distance, which makes their use in statistical procedures very promising. In view of these properties, we believe needlets may turn out to be especially useful in the analysis of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data on the incomplete sky, as well as of other cosmological observations. As a final advantage, we stress that the implementation of needlets is computationally very convenient and may rely completely on standard data analysis packages such as HEALPix.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure
