High energy neutron and gamma-radiation generated during the solar flares
The problem of high energy neutrons and gamma rays generation in the solar conditions is considered. It is shown that due to a peculiarity of generation and propagation of neutrons corresponding solar flares should be localized at high helio-longitudes
Lithium-6 from Solar Flares
By introducing a hitherto ignored Li-6 producing process, due to accelerated
He-3 reactions with He-4, we show that accelerated particle interactions in
solar flares produce much more Li-6 than Li-7. By normalizing our calculations
to gamma-ray data we demonstrate that the Li-6 produced in solar flares,
combined with photospheric Li-7, can account for the recently determined solar
wind lithium isotopic ratio, obtained from measurements in lunar soil, provided
that the bulk of the flare produced lithium is evacuated by the solar wind.
Further research in this area could provide unique information on a variety of
problems, including solar atmospheric transport and mixing, solar convection
and the lithium depletion issue, and solar wind and solar particle
acceleration.Comment: latex 9 pages, 2 figures, ApJ Letters in pres
Neutron and gamma ray production in the 1991 June X-class flares
We present new calculations of pion radiation and neutron emission from solar flares. We fit the recently reported high energy GAMMA-1 observations with pion radiation produced in a solar flare magnetic loop. We calculate the expected neutron emission in such a loop model and make predictions of the neutron fluences expected from the 1991 June X-class flares
Lithium Production in Companions of Accreting X-Ray Binaries by Neutron Spallation of C,N,O Elements
We examine the processes which could lead to the observed enhancement of Li
and possibly other light elements (Be, B) in the companions of a number of
X-ray novae. We conclude that one of the most promising mechanisms is the
spallation of CNO elements on the surface of the companion induced by the
neutron flux produced in the hot accretion flow onto the compact object. Direct
production of the observed Li and its deposition onto the dwarf companion seem
less likely, mainly because of the possibility of its destruction in the
production region itself and difficulties in its deposition associated with the
configuration of the companion's magnetic field. We discuss other potential
observables of the above scenario.Comment: 23 pages Latex, of which 5 pages of tables, to appear in the
