    Conventional and manipulated growth of Cu-Cu(111)

    Molecular beam epitaxy of Cu on Cu(111) was studied using thermal energy He scattering, in the temperature range between 100 and 450 K. Three-dimensional growth was observed in the whole temperature range. To determine the onset of various diffusion processes, submonolayer films formed by deposition at low temperature were annealed. Annealing proceeds in two steps. The first step is interpreted as a change in island shape, the second as Ostwald-ripening. A comparison with homoepitaxy on Pt(111) and Ag(111) is made. Growth manipulation was carried out by artificially increasing the island number density via intervention in the nucleation stage of each layer. The procedures applied were temperature reduction during nucleation as well as pulsed ion bombardment. These techniques enabled the convenient growth of good quality films consisting of a large number of monolayers. Finally, the use of oxygen as a surfactant modifying the growth mode was investigated. Under some growth conditions, pre-exposure of the surface to oxygen was found to induce weak He-intensity oscillations during deposition. The quality of the films grown in this way was, however, low

    Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) implantation is the only established therapy for primary or secondary prevention of sudden cardiac death in patients with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM). Ineffectiveness of shock therapy for the termination of potentially fatal ventricular arrhythmias in ICD recipients is rare in the presence of appropriate arrhythmia detection by the device. We report the case of a 48-year-old woman with HCM and a single chamber ICD, who received five inefficient high-energy (35 Joules) shocks for the termination of an appropriately detected episode of Ventricular Tachycardia (VT). The episode was safely terminated with a subsequent application of Antitachycardia Pacing (ATP) by the device. At the following ICD control, an acceptable defibrillation threshold was detected

    QUESTION: What is the role of temozolomide in the management of adult patients (aged 65 and under) with newly diagnosed glioblastoma? TARGET POPULATION: These recommendations apply to adult patients diagnosed with newly diagnosed glioblastoma. RECOMMENDATION: Level I: Concurrent and post-irradiation Temozolomide (TMZ) in combination with radiotherapy and post-radiotherapy as described by Stupp et al. is recommended to improve both PFS and OS in adult patients with newly diagnosed GBM. There is no evidence that alterations in the dosing regimen have additional beneficial effect. QUESTION: Is there benefit to adjuvant temozolomide treatment in elderly patients (\u3e 65 years old?). TARGET POPULATION: These recommendations apply to adult patients diagnosed with newly diagnosed glioblastoma. RECOMMENDATION: Level III: Adjuvant TMZ treatment is suggested as a treatment option to improve PFS and OS in adult patients (over 70 years of age) with newly diagnosed GBM. QUESTION: What is the role of local regional chemotherapy with BCNU biodegradable polymeric wafers in adult patients with newly diagnosed glioblastoma? TARGET POPULATION: These recommendations apply to adult patients diagnosed with newly diagnosed glioblastoma. RECOMMENDATION: Level III: There is insufficient evidence for the use of BCNU wafers following resection in patients with newly diagnosed glioblastoma who undergo the Stupp protocol after surgery. Further studies of higher quality are suggested to understand the role of BCNU wafer and other locoregional therapy in the setting of Stupp Protocol. QUESTION: What is the role of bevacizumab in the adult patient with newly diagnosed glioblastoma? TARGET POPULATION: These recommendations apply to adult patients diagnosed with newly diagnosed glioblastoma. RECOMMENDATION: Level I: Bevacizumab in general is not recommended in the initial treatment of adult patients with newly diagnosed GBM. It continues to be strongly recommended that patients with newly diagnosed GBM be enrolled in properly designed clinical trials to assess the benefit of novel chemotherapeutic agents compared to standard therapy

    Cerebral embolization is one of the most important procedures in neuroendovasculare intervention. Fast developments of new microcatheters that can be maneuvered endovascularly into the brain have permitted the treatment of lesions without conventional neurosurgery. Also, the progress in biomaterial science has contributed significantly to the development of this new therapeutic modality. Various embolic materials in clinical use are reviewed, such as cyanoacrylates, ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer mixtures, Ethibloc, ethanol, estrogen, poly(vinyl acetate), cellulose acetate polymer, poly(vinyl alcohol), gelatin sponges, microfibrillar collagen, surgical silk sutures, detachable balloons, and coils. These materials are reviewed in the context of treatment application for various brain lesions, such as arteriovenous malformations, cerebral aneurysms, and head and neck tumors. Further developments in biomaterial polymer science can bring about progress against brain diseases

    The FiDel model at 7 TeV

    After the long shut down of 2013-2014, the LHC energy will be pushed toward 7 TeV. In this range of energy, the main magnets will enter a new regime. For this reason, this paper will present a detailed study of the performance of the FiDeL model that could be critical for the operation in 2015. In particular this paper will study the saturation component and its precision in the model, the errors due to the hysteresis, and an estimate of the dynamic effects for the 7 TeV operation.peer-reviewe
