    Do employees with Flexible Contracts receive less Training?

    For the growing group of flexible workers, further investments in their human capital are even more important than for employees with permanent contracts, because the labour market position of flexible workers is continuously at risk. In this paper, we analyse the participation rate of flexible employees in company training. We will simultaneously estimate the determinants of receiving continuing vocational training and the duration of this training in a sample selection model. The estimation results indicate that flexible employees receive about half as much training with the current employer than permanent employees. A Blinder-like decomposition analysis shows that 40% of this difference is due to the fact that employers are more willing to invest in the human capital of permanent employees. However, flexible workers who do get training participate in training of at least the same duration as that of the permanent employees.education, training and the labour market;

    Determining the direct mailing frequency with dynamic stochastic programming

    Both in business to business and in consumer markets direct mailings are an important means of communication with individual customers. This paper studies the mailing frequency problem that addresses the issue of how often to send a mailing to an individual customer in order to establish a profitable long-term relationship rather than targeting profitable groups of customers at every new mailing instance. The mailing frequency is optimized using long-term objectives but restricts the decisions to the number of mailings to send to the individual over consecutive finite planning periods. A stochastic dynamic programming model that is formulated for this problem is easy to solved for many applications in direct mailing. A particular implementation of the model will provide the direct mailer with controls to stimulate desired response behavior of their customers. The model is calibrated for a large non-profit organization and shows that very large improvements can be achieved by approaching the mailing strategy with the mailing frequency problem, both in the number of mailing to send and in the profits resulting from the responses.Direct marketing;Stochastic dynamic programming

    XMM-Newton observations of two transient millisecond X-ray pulsars in quiescence

    We report on XMM-Newton observations of two X-ray transient millisecond pulsars (XRTMSPs). We detected XTE J0929-314 with an unabsorbed luminosity of \~7x10^{31} erg/s. (0.5-10 keV) at a fiducial distance of 10 kpc. The quiescent spectrum is consistent with a simple power law spectrum. The upper limit on the flux from a cooling neutron star atmosphere is about 20% of the total flux. XTE J1807-294 instead was not detected. We can put an upper limit on the source quiescent 0.5-10 keV unabsorbed luminosity <4x10^{31} erg/s at 8 kpc. These observations strenghten the idea that XRTMSPs have quiescent luminosities significantly lower than classical neutron star transients.Comment: 4 pages including 1 figures.     Origin of the large thermoelectric power in oxygen-variable RBaCo_{2}O_{5+x} (R=Gd, Nd)

    Thermoelectric properties of GdBaCo_{2}O_{5+x} and NdBaCo_{2}O_{5+x} single crystals have been studied upon continuous doping of CoO_2 planes with either electrons or holes. The thermoelectric response and the resistivity behavior reveal a hopping character of the transport in both compounds, providing the basis for understanding the recently found remarkable divergence of the Seebeck coefficient at x=0.5. The doping dependence of the thermoelectric power evinces that the configurational entropy of charge carriers, enhanced by their spin and orbital degeneracy, plays a key role in the origin of the large thermoelectric response in these correlated oxides.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in PR

    As an effective model to describe perovskite-type manganates (La,AA)MnO3_3, the double-exchange model on a cubic lattice is investigated. Spin excitation spectrum of the model in the ground state is studied using the spin wave approximation. Spin wave dispersion relation observed in the inelastic neutron scattering experiment of La0.7_{0.7}Pb0.3_{0.3}MnO3_3 is reproduced.     Temperature dependent asymmetry of the nonlocal spin-injection resistance: evidence for spin non-conserving interface scattering

    We report nonlocal spin injection and detection experiments on mesoscopic Co-Al2O3-Cu spin valves. We have observed a temperature dependent asymmetry in the nonlocal resistance between parallel and antiparallel configurations of the magnetic injector and detector.
