    Identifying the most influential risk factors of frequent infant mortality in Iraq

    Nowadays, frequent Infant Mortality for the married women are prevailing in Iraq. It may be also considered as a risky phenomenon in developing countries. It is the loss of an infant after viability. The estimated number is 2.5 million deaths occurring in the first month of life in 2017 alone. On the other hand, the survival rates of newborn infants reflect the quality of pregnancy care provided during work and viability and the infrastructure for the infant care in the different regions and countries of the world. Numerous risk factors are causing this phenomenon. Logistic regression is a statistical technique can be used to express the association between the number of infant mortality and the risk factors cause it. It helps to select the most influential risk factors for this case. The aim of this study is to use logistic regression to examine the association between biological, behavioral and lifestyle risk factors and the number of infant mortality, and to identify the most influential risk factors affected it. A simple random sample is drawn with size of 200 persons that consists of all mothers who visit the primary health care centers in Babylon province in year 2018. Seventeen risk factors are representing biological, behavioral and lifestyle factors of women under the study. The results of fitting binary and ordinal logistic regressions with all seventeen risk factors show that four risk factors show a significance effect on the dependent variable. Consequently, a stepwise logistic regression was fitted, and ordinal logistic regression model has fitted. Nevertheless, there are no much differences between the results of these models with different methods of fitting. All results show that husbands working has two times more likely to exhibit infant mortality than Husbands not working. Increasing age at marriage and woman weight were associated with an increased likelihood of exhibiting infant mortality, but increasing number of hours of women's sleeping was associated with a reduction in the likelihood of exhibiting infant mortality

    Assessment of Inflammasome Activity in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Simple Obesity: Comparative Study

    Inflammasome is a multiprotein oligomer complex which is the precursor procaspase-1 and is a component of the innate immune system so that this study aimed to determine the serum levels of interleukin-1? and 18 in patients with T2D and simple obesity in an attempt to clarify the role of inflammasome in these disorders.Twenty five known cases of T2D, twenty four patients with simple obesity and twenty healthy subjects were randomly recruited from AL-Kindy Teaching Hospital in Baghdad to enroll in this study. All the data about the demographic characteristics and anthropometric measurements were determined in all patients, also the C-reactive protein and serum interleukin (IL)-1? and IL-18 levels were obtained from each patient. The results showed that patients who had positive C-reactive protein (? 6 mg/L) had significant high level of serum 1? and IL-18 levels. Concomitant significant increase in serum levels of IL-1? and IL-18 was observed only in 8% (2 out of 25) of T2D. It concludes that the activity of inflammasome is observed in low percent of T2D and this activity does not related to the obesity

    Are obese women potential for inflammatory process? A pilot study

    This study was designed to look for certain biochemical markers(serum uric acid and serum peroxynitrite) in women presented with obesity and to compare the level of these markers with non-obese women. A total number of 63 women were recruited from outpatients and private clinics to admit in this study. The patients were grouped into non obese women (Group I) and obese women (Group II). The anthropometric and blood pressure were determined and venous blood was obtained from each patient for determination of C-reactive protein, uric acid and peroxynitrite. The results showed that there were no significant differences in age or in concomitant or associated diseases in both groups except rheumatoid arthritis which account 80% of group I and 25% of group II. The body mass index of Group I patients was 25.27±4.19 kg/h2 compared with 40.03±16.64 kg/h2 of Group II (p < 0.001). There were no significant differences in waist to hip ratio between two groups. The means systolic and diastolic blood pressures were higher in Group II compare with Group I. Positive C-reactive protein was observed in 53.3% and 52.1% of patients in Groups I and II respectively. Serum uric acid and peroxynitrite were non-significantly higher in Group II compared with Group I. It was concluded that obesity in women is associated with increased level of metabolic and nitrosative markers as well as alteration in inflammatory marker

    The glycated haemoglobin A1c(HbA1c) and Fasting blood glucose(FBG) effect on type1 diabetic pateints as a screening tests and as a gold standard for assessing glycemic control in subjects with diabetes were studied . Ninety one blood samples were collected in a peroid between June and the end of November 2012 at AL- Kindy Diabetic Center and Central Child Hospital,48 Females and 43 Males , aging between (11 month- 18 year), are divided into three groups, newly diagnosed , ongoing and healthy control group, with duration of disease between(1 day-3months) and (from birth-8 years) for newly diagnosed and ongoing groups respectevily . The results showed that FBG and HbA1c for newly diagnosed were high (291 mmol/l and 10.6%) respectevily with short duration mean (3.32 week) while ongoing group (207mmol/L and 7.4%) with duration mean(154.5 week) compared with control group values (92.6mmol/L and 4.9%).There was a significant differences between FBG in patients and control at P value < 0.005, and p < 0.05 between HbA1c for patients and control .The correlation of FBG in patients and duration of disease were ( r= - ve 0.19) and for the control group ( r= -ve 0.49 ).When we compared FBG and HbA1c in patient the correlation was (+ve 0.64) .This study concluds that the combined use of FBG and HbA1c are very important for assessing glycemic control and enhanced the detection of diabetes individuals at high risk for diabetes

    Studying HLA class I polymorphism in brain tumour patients

    The present study aimed at shed light on the association between HLA-class I antigens (A, B and Cw) and brain tumours (meningioma and glioma) in the basis of their individual frequencies or two-locus association A total of 52 brain tumour patients were enrolled in this study, with an age range of 7-68 years. The patients were divided into two clinical groups; meningioma (20 cases) and glioma (22 cases), while the remaining 10 cases represented other types of brain tumour. Control samples included 47 Iraqi Arab apparently healthy blood volunteers, with an age range of 15-50 year. Three HLA antigens showed a significant increased frequency in total patients as compared to controls. They were B13 (34.6 vs. 6.5%), B40 (15.4 vs. 2.2%) and Cw3 (15.4 vs. 2.2%). In contrast, B5 was significantly decreased (15.4 vs. 34.8%). In meningioma patients, only B13 was significantly increased (35.0 vs. 6.5%), while in glioma patients, B13 (36.4 vs. 6.5%) and Cw5 (36.4 vs. 2.2%) were significantly increased. Variations between patients and controls have been also encountered for the observed and expected HLA-two locus associations (B13-Cw3, B13-Cw5 and B40-Cw5)
