Turbulence measurements using the laser Doppler velocimeter
The photomultiplier signal representing the axial velocity of water within a glass pipe is examined. It is shown that with proper analysis of the photomultiplier signal, the turbulent information that can be obtained in liquid flows is equivalent to recent hot film studies. In shear flows the signal from the laser Doppler velocimeter contains additional information which may be related to the average shear
Towards Zeptosecond-Scale Pulses from X-Ray Free-Electron Lasers
The short wavelength and high peak power of the present generation of
free-electron lasers (FELs) opens the possibility of ultra-short pulses even
surpassing the present (tens to hundreds of attoseconds) capabilities of other
light sources - but only if x-ray FELs can be made to generate pulses
consisting of just a few optical cycles. For hard x-ray operation (~0.1nm),
this corresponds to durations of approximately a single attosecond, and below
into the zeptosecond scale. This talk will describe a novel method to generate
trains of few-cycle pulses, at GW peak powers, from existing x-ray FEL
facilities by using a relatively short 'afterburner'. Such pulses would enhance
research opportunity in atomic dynamics and push capability towards the
investigation of electronic-nuclear and nuclear dynamics. The corresponding
multi-colour spectral output, with a bandwidth envelope increased by up to two
orders of magnitudes over SASE, also has potential applications.Comment: Submitted to 35th International Free Electron Laser Conference, New

One-Electron Ionization of Multielectron Systems in Strong Nonresonant Laser Fields
We present a novel approach to calculating strong field ionization dynamics
of multielectron molecular targets. Adopting a multielectron wavefunction
ansatz based on field-free ab initio neutral and ionic multielectron states, a
set of coupled time-dependent single-particle Schroedinger equations describing
the neutral amplitude and continuum electron are constructed. These equations,
amenable to direct numerical solution or further analytical treatment, allow
one to study multielectron effects during strong field ionization, recollision,
and high harmonic generation. We apply the method to strong field ionization of
CO_2, and suggest the importance of intermediate core excitation to explain
previous failure of analytical models to reproduce experimental ionization
yields for this molecule.Comment: 25 pages, 6 figure
A new technique for oil backstreaming contamination measurements
Due to the large size and the number of diffusion pumps, space simulation chambers cannot be easily calibrated by the usual test dome method for measuring backstreaming from oil diffusion pumps. In addition, location dependent contamination may be an important parameter of the test. The backstreaming contamination was measured in the Space Power Facility (SPF) near Sandusky, OH, the largest space simulation vacuum test chamber in the U.S.. Small clean silicon wafers placed at all desired measurement sites were used as contamination sensors. The facility used diffusion pumps with DC 705 oil. The thickness of the contamination oil film was measured using ellipsometry. Since the oil did not wet the silicon substrate uniformly, two analysis models were developed to measure the oil film: (1) continuous, homogeneous film; and (2) islands of oil with the islands varying in coverage fraction and height. In both cases, the contamination film refractive index was assumed to be that of DC 705. The second model improved the ellipsometric analysis quality parameter by up to two orders of magnitude, especially for the low coverage cases. Comparison of the two models shows that the continuous film model overestimates the oil volume by less than 50 percent. Absolute numbers for backstreaming are in good agreement with published results for diffusion pumps. Good agreement was also found between the ellipsometric results and measurements done by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) on examples exposed to the same vacuum runs
