    How Does Immigration Impact Output, Employment and Wages? Evidence from United Kingdom

    This study investigates the impact of immigration on the UK economy using time-series data from 1975 to 2006 and panel data of 12 regions from 2002 to 2006. This study was conducted in 2008 when there was a national debate going on whether the immigration impacted the economy positively or negatively. A rigorous econometric exercise has been done in both time-series and panel models. Results found from various estimation techniques predominantly show immigrants to be contributing to increasing GDP, reducing unemployment and increasing wages. Granger non-causality test confirms immigrants’ role in causing economic growth of this country to rise. Tests do not show any long-run relationship between GDP and immigration share. No significant impulse is created in GDP, wage rate or unemployment rate in response to any shock taking place in the immigration share of this country according to the datasets used in this study

    A Computer Oriented Algorithm to Determine the Raw-Mixture Composition for Sintering

    Sintering is an agglomeration process of fine part-icles and widely used as a standard method for preparation of blast furnace-feed. In iron-ore sintering, iron ore fines viz. iron ore crushed to ---10 mm size, classifier fines, cyclone underflow, blue-dust etc. together with other iron-bearing waste materials viz. mill-scale, flue dust etc. are mixed with fluxing materials like limestone, dolomite etc. and sintered in a continuously operated sinter strand or a bench-scale sinter pot. The sintering of fine particles results from incipient fusion of materi-als due to heat liberated by combustion of coke-breeze incorporated in the raw mixture and also exothermic heat liberated through complex chemical reactions taking place during the process of sintering. Water added during mixing helps to maintain a proper permeability and return fines act as a supporting structure for the mixture

    Tunneling conduction in graphene/(poly)vinyl alcohol composites

    Graphene/(Poly)vinyl alcohol (PVA) composite film with thickness 60ÎĽm60 \mu m were synthesized by solidification of a PVA solution comprising of dispersed graphene nanosheets. The close proximity of the graphene sheets enables the fluctuation induced tunneling of electrons to occur from one sheet to another. The dielectric data show that the present system can be simulated to a parallel resistance-capacitor network. The high frequency exponent of the frequency variation of the ac conductivity indicates that the charge carriers move in a two-dimensional space. The sample preparation technique will be helpful for synthesizing flexible conductors.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure

    Lean implementation involves eliminating all forms of waste (for example, defects or overproduction) and consists of many improvement strategies or systems such as mistake proofing (Poka-Yoke) and Single Minute Exchange of Die (a.k.a. quick changeover). The purpose of this study is to discuss a successful lean or waste elimination initiative for a building products company. Specifically, this study describes how mistake proofing and quick changeover systems were implemented using soft OR practices or Soft Systems Methodology (SSM). Essentially, SSM consisted of four sequential stages, namely (1) problem identification, (2) basic approaches to improvement, (3) making plans for improvement, and (4) translating improvement plans into reality. The study contributes in two ways: for practicing managers, it shows that at the core of lean is soft OR practices, and for academicians, it provides directions for future research

    Dynamic Response and Static Analysis of RCC Space Frames Supporting High Speed Centrifugal Machines with Coupled Soil-Structure Interaction

    The paper reviews the current state of the art on the dynamic and static analyses of RCC space frames supporting high speed centrifugal machines e.g. large turbogenerators and compressors. The need to include the effects of soil-structure interaction formulations on overall behaviour of various analytical models are highlighted, At the same time, the uncertainties involved in evaluating essential geotechnical parameters and paucity of reliable and elaborate information from the machine manufacturers are discussed. The analysis and design aspects of this inter-disciplinary problem are illustrated with two typical design case studies selected from authors’ own experience in this specialised field. The paper also discusses the usefulness, if any, of such rigorous analysis and identifies various shortcomings which still persist in finalising realistic design data and adopting suitable models to represent machine foundation-soil system

    Optimisation of Process Variables in Sintering through Statistical design of Experiments

    An attempt has been made to quantify the effects of the variables on strength in sintering of iron ore/blue dust received from Bailadila, NMDC. For this, the method of design 2n factorial experiment is used to obtain a response surface equation. Results indicate if the coke breeze increases in the range of variation of the variable in sintering, the strength increases but strength decreases when moisture increases from lower level to higher level. Blue dust does no effect the strength. The optimum levi (-4: variables for the maximon strength of the sinter produ(A is determined by the method of hexagonal design of experjnent. The results indicate that for a basicity of 1.9 an acceptable quality of sinter can be produced. Blue dust amounting to 40.0% of all the iron ore fines taken together can be incorporated in the raw mixture without imparting the strength of the finished sinter
