    Prismatic adaptation reduces biased temporal order judgements in spatial neglect

    Visuomotor adaptation to rightward-deviating optical-wedge prisms reduces the clinical manifestations of spatial neglect after right hemisphere damage. We investigated whether this beneficial effect of prism adaptation is due to attenuation of the ipsilesional attentional bias that is common in spatial neglect. Five right hemisphere patients performed visual temporal order judgements before and after visuomotor adaptation to 15degrees rightward-deviating prisms. The magnitude of patients' ipsilesional attentional bias on the temporal order judgement task was significantly reduced following adaptation. By contrast, the temporal order judgements of normal participants did not change following adaptation to either leftward- or rightward-deviating prisms. The findings suggest that prism adaptation helps to rebalance the distribution of spatial attention following right hemisphere damage

    The western corn rootworm (WCR), Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, is a destructive pest of corn in the United States and Europe. To monitor the spread of WCR in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Csalomon pheromone traps and Multigard traps were placed in eastern and western municipalities in 1998. According to the data, the WCR population spread approximately 15-20 km towards the central region of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The spread occurred in areas of monocultural corn as well as in areas where corn is grown continuously

    Attentional modulation of visual cortex activity following right parietal damage in humans

    Pathological inattention following parietal damage causes perceptual impairments for visual stimuli in the contralesional hemifield. Here we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine visual cortex activity in parietal patients as they performed a spatial attention task. Righthemisphere patients and healthy controls viewed counterphasing checkerboards in which coloured targets appeared briefly within the contralesional and ipsilesional hemifields. In separate fMRI runs participants focused their attention covertiy on the left or right hemifield, or on both hemifields concurrentiy. They were required to detect coloured targets that appeared briefly within the attended hemifield(s), and to withhold responses to distractor stimuli. Neural activit}' was significantly attenuated in early visual areas within the damaged hemisphere. Crucially, although attention significantiy modulated early visual activit}' within the intact (left) hemisphere, there was relatively littie modulation of activity within the affected hemisphere. Our findings suggest that parietal lesions alter early cortical responses to contralesional visual inputs

    ABO histo-blood groups and Rh systems in relation to malignant tumors of the digestive tract in Bosnia and Herzegovina

    The distribution of ABO blood groups and the Rhesus factor was analyzed in 279 patients who suffered from malignant tumors of the digestive system. Patients were registered retrospectively in the Gastroenterohepatology Clinic, Clinical Center, University of Sarajevo over a discontinuous period of 88 months. From the results obtained, it was concluded that: (a) men became ill from gastric cancer significantly more frequently than women; (b) the frequency of liver carcinoma was three times higher than the global frequency and the frequency neighboring ethnic groups; and (c) patients with blood group B and patients with RhD(-) exhibited a significantly higher proportion of disease
