    ZZ brane amplitudes from matrix models

    We study instanton contribution to the partition function of the one matrix model in the k-th multicritical region, which corresponds to the (2,2k-1) minimal model coupled to Liouville theory. The instantons in the one matrix model are given by local extrema of the effective potential for a matrix eigenvalue and identified with the ZZ branes in Liouville theory. We show that the 2-instanton contribution in the partition function is universal as well as the 1-instanton contribution and that the connected part of the 2-instanton contribution reproduces the annulus amplitudes between the ZZ branes in Liouville theory. Our result serves as another nontrivial check on the correspondence between the instantons in the one matrix model and the ZZ branes in Liouville theory, and also suggests that the expansion of the partition function in terms of the instanton numbers are universal and gives systematically ZZ brane amplitudes in Liouville theory.Comment: 29 pages, 4 figures; v2:how to scale x is generalized; v3:introduction and the last section are revised, typos correcte

    The emergence of expanding space-time in a novel large-NN limit of the Lorentzian type IIB matrix model

    The Lorentzian type IIB matrix model is a promising candidate for a non-perturbative formulation of superstring theory. However, it was found recently that a Euclidean space-time appears in the conventional large-NN limit. In this work, we add a Lorentz invariant mass term to the original model and consider a limit, in which the coefficient of the mass term vanishes at large NN.     N=4 SYM on R x S^3 and Theories with 16 Supercharges

    We study N=4 SYM on R x S^3 and theories with 16 supercharges arising as its consistent truncations. These theories include the plane wave matrix model, N=4 SYM on R x S^2 and N=4 SYM on R x S^3/Z_k, and their gravity duals were studied by Lin and Maldacena. We make a harmonic expansion of the original N=4 SYM on R x S^3 and obtain each of the truncated theories by keeping a part of the Kaluza-Klein modes. This enables us to analyze all the theories in a unified way. We explicitly construct some nontrivial vacua of N=4 SYM on R x S^2. We perform 1-loop analysis of the original and truncated theories. In particular, we examine states regarded as the integrable SO(6) spin chain and a time-dependent BPS solution, which is considered to correspond to the AdS giant graviton in the original theory.Comment: 68 pages, 12 figures, v2,v3:typos corrected and comments added.     We report systematic first-principles calculations for ordered zinc-blende compounds of the transition metal elements V, Cr, Mn with the sp elements N, P, As, Sb, S, Se, Te, motivated by recent fabrication of zinc-blende CrAs, CrSb, and MnAs. They show ferromagnetic half-metallic behavior for a wide range of lattice constants.     Testing a novel large-N reduction for N=4 super Yang-Mills theory on RxS^3

    Recently a novel large-N reduction has been proposed as a maximally supersymmetric regularization of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory on RxS^3 in the planar limit. This proposal, if it works, will enable us to study the theory non-perturbatively on a computer, and hence to test the AdS/CFT correspondence analogously to the recent works on the D0-brane system. We provide a nontrivial check of this proposal by performing explicit calculations in the large-N reduced model, which is nothing but the so-called plane wave matrix model, around a particular stable vacuum corresponding to RxS^3. At finite temperature and at weak coupling, we reproduce precisely the deconfinement phase transition in the N=4 super Yang-Mills theory on RxS^3. This phase transition is considered to continue to the strongly coupled regime, where it corresponds to the Hawking-Page transition on the AdS side. We also perform calculations around other stable vacua, and reproduce the phase transition in super Yang-Mills theory on the corresponding curved space-times such as RxS^3/Z_q and RxS^2.Comment: 24 pages, 4 figure

    Development of a Bead-Based Multiplex Genotyping Method for Diagnostic Characterization of HPV Infection

    The accurate genotyping of human papillomavirus (HPV) is clinically important because the oncogenic potential of HPV is dependent on specific genotypes. Here, we described the development of a bead-based multiplex HPV genotyping (MPG) method which is able to detect 20 types of HPV (15 high-risk HPV types 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 53, 56, 58, 59, 66, 68 and 5 low-risk HPV types 6, 11, 40, 55, 70) and evaluated its accuracy with sequencing. A total of 890 clinical samples were studied. Among these samples, 484 were HPV positive and 406 were HPV negative by consensus primer (PGMY09/11) directed PCR. The genotyping of 484 HPV positive samples was carried out by the bead-based MPG method. The accuracy was 93.5% (95% CI, 91.0–96.0), 80.1% (95% CI, 72.3–87.9) for single and multiple infections, respectively, while a complete type mismatch was observed only in one sample. The MPG method indiscriminately detected dysplasia of several cytological grades including 71.8% (95% CI, 61.5–82.3) of ASCUS (atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance) and more specific for high grade lesions. For women with HSIL (high grade squamous intraepithelial lesion) and SCC diagnosis, 32 women showed a PPV (positive predictive value) of 77.3% (95% CI, 64.8–89.8). Among women >40 years of age, 22 women with histological cervical cancer lesions showed a PPV of 88% (95% CI, 75.3–100). Of the highest risk HPV types including HPV-16, 18 and 31 positive women of the same age groups, 34 women with histological cervical cancer lesions showed a PPV of 77.3% (95% CI, 65.0–89.6). Taken together, the bead-based MPG method could successfully detect high-grade lesions and high-risk HPV types with a high degree of accuracy in clinical samples
