Relationship Between Biogenic Amines and Free Amino Acid Contents of Winesand Musts from Alentejo (Portugal)
The concentration of biogenic amines and free amino acids was studied in 102
Portuguese wines and 18 musts from Alentejo demarcated (D.O.C.) regions. Most wines
were commercial, except for 38 monovarietals obtained by micro vinification. Musts
from the varieties used to produce the latter wines were also studied. Both biogenic
amines and free amino acids were analyzed by HPLC using fluorescence detection for
their o-phthalaldehyde/fluorenylmethyl chloroformate (OPA/FMOC) derivatives. The
most significant amines (average 10.8 mg/L for histamine+tyramine in red, and 7.4
mg/L for white wines) were found to be present at low levels and, although no important
relationship between each individual biogenic amine could be obtained, the total amine
content depends significantly on the assimilable amino acid content in wine
Self-Reported Health Status in Primary Health Care: The Influence of Immigration and Other Associated Factors
OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study are to compare self-reported health status between Spanish-born and Latin American-born Spanish residents, adjusted by length of residence in the host country; and additionally, to analyse sociodemographic and psychosocial variables associated with a better health status. DESIGN: This is a cross-sectional population based study of Latin American-born (n = 691) and Spanish-born (n = 903) in 15 urban primary health care centres in Madrid (Spain), carried out between 2007 and 2009. The participants provided information, through an interview, about self-reported health status, socioeconomic characteristics, psychosocial factors and migration conditions. Descriptive and multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted. RESULTS: The Spanish-born participants reported a better health status than the Latin America-born participants (79.8% versus 69.3%, p<0.001). Different patterns of self-reported health status were observed depending on the length of residence in the host country. The proportion of immigrants with a better health status is greater in those who have been in Spain for less than five years compared to those who have stayed longer. Better health status is significantly associated with being men, under 34 years old, being Spanish-born, having a monthly incomes of over 1000 euros, and having considerable social support and low stress. CONCLUSIONS: Better self-reported health status is associated with being Spanish-born, men, under 34 years old, having an uppermiddle-socioeconomic status, adequate social support, and low stress. Additionally, length of residence in the host country is seen as a related factor in the self-reported health status of immigrants
Effect of pure and mixed cultures of the main wine yeast species on grape must fermentations

We have analysed how mixed inocula of the main non-Saccharomyces yeasts and S. cerevisiae affect fermentation performance, nitrogen consumption and volatile compound production in a natural Macabeo grape must. Sterile must was fermented in triplicates and under the following six conditions: three pure cultures of S. cerevisiae, Hanseniaspora uvarum and Candida zemplinina and the mixtures of H. uvarum:S. cerevisiae (90:10), C. zemplinina:S. cerevisiae (90:10) and H. uvarum:C. zemplinina:S. cerevisiae (45:45:10). The presence of non-Saccharomyces yeasts slowed down the fermentations and produced higher levels of glycerol and acetic acid. Only the pure H. uvarum fermentations were unable to finish. Mixed fermentations consumed more of the available amino acids and were more complex and thus better able to synthesise volatile compounds. World Region of Origin and Common Mental Disorders Among Migrant Women in Spain
Migration can affect the mental health of migrants. This cross-sectional study has two objectives: (1) to compare the prevalence of common mental disorder (CMD) between migrants (n = 458) living in Granada (Spain) and Spanish-born women (n = 448); (2) within migrants, to analyse the associations of world region of origin, other sociodemographic factors and post-migration features with the presence of CMD. Participants answered a questionnaire, including sociodemographic characteristics, post-migration features and CMD that was measured by Kessler K6-scale. Logistic regression analyses showed that CMD (K6 ≥ 13) was significantly higher among migrants than Spaniards. Compared with Spaniards, the odds of CMD were 3.6 [95 % confidence intervals (CI) 2.1–6.0] and 2.9 (CI 1.6–5.3), respectively, for Latin Americans and for Moroccan and other African women. Among migrants, Latin Americans as opposed to the reference group (migrants from other countries), had higher probability of CMD (OR 2.3, CI 1.1–4.9). This study supports the hypothesis that migration leads to mental distress. Consideration of world region of origin may clarify the differences observed in mental health across different migrant groups.</p
