    Social pedagogy and social work relations in Greece: autonomous trajectories

    This article explores the relationship between social pedagogy and social work in Greece. The search begins with the identification of their philosophical roots, which, although they are common and start from the Ancient Greek philosophers, have led the course of each discipline in a different direction. What follows is the presentation of the most important defining elements of the development of the studies of social work and social pedagogy in Greece, which include features and historical landmarks. The different trajectories can be seen from the development of studies, where social work has a long tradition as an academic discipline, whereas the academic tradition of social pedagogy is much shorter. A similar differentiation is found in the professional frameworks of social work and social pedagogy in Greece, that is, in the institutionalisation of the profession of social worker and social pedagogue. Indicative data from the field of research of each discipline are then presented. Despite the differences and the autonomous trajectories, remarkable commonalities and similarities between social pedagogy and social work in Greece are identified, such as some basic principles, priorities, epistemological and methodological dimensions and some common areas of interest and action. Therefore, the autonomous trajectories of these disciplines do not separate them, but as potentially complementary, are able to make interdisciplinary connections between them, so that prevention and intervention programmes, especially in the fields of education and the community, can be developed

    Role of interventional radiology in pudendal neuralgia: A description of techniques and review of the literature [Ruolo della radiologia interventistica nella nevralgia del nervo pudendo: Descrizione della tecnica e revisione della letteratura]

    Purpose: The authors sought to evaluate indications, technical feasibility and clinical efficacy of computed tomography (CT)-guided pudendal nerve infiltration in patients with chronic anoperineal pain by reviewing the role of the CT technique in their personal experience and in the recent interventional literature. Materials and methods: Twenty-eight women, mean age 50 years, and with a diagnosis of pudendal neuralgia on the basis of clinical and electromyographic criteria were enrolled in the study. CT-guided pudendal nerve injections were performed during three consecutive sessions held 2 weeks apart. In each session, patients received two percutaneous injections: one in the ischial spine, and the other in the pudendal (Alcock's) canal. Results: One patient dropped out of the study after the first session. At clinical assessment, 24h h after treatment, 21/27 patients reported significant pain relief. At follow-up at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months, 24/27 patients reported a ≥ 20% improvement in the Quality of Life (QOL) index. Conclusions. In pudendal nerve entrapment, CT-guided perineural injection in the anatomical sites of nerve impingement is a safe and reproducible treatment with a clinical efficacy of 92% at 12 months. © 2009 Springer-Verlag Italia

    Syneducational transactions among students, parents, educators and policy makers: The transdisciplinary program SYNTHESIS

    Modern society is characterized by complexity, uncertainty and fuzziness, and people need to re-examine their strategies as well as their way of thinking as a whole in order to cope with the problems that emerge. This project attempts to reinforce syneducational transactions among people (students, parents, educators, policy makers) who are interested in educational issues and are actively involved in them. Its aim is to actively support the implementation of a transdisciplinary program (SYNTHESIS) from a "mutual mentoring" perspective in an interactive learning environment. Within this framework we can develop the timeless principles of Socratic dialogue together with the modern concepts related to systems theory and knowledge management. A certain research model is suggested for the implementation of the above as well as a protocol for the overall evaluation of the program

    Social pedagogy and bullying in schools: the views of university students in England, Greece and Norway

    This study explores the extent to which a social pedagogic perspective is evident in the views of bullying in schools held by a sample of university students in England, Greece and Norway studying in the area of the education, care and welfare of children. A total of 469 university students completed a questionnaire in which they were asked to rate their strength of agreement with 30 statements concerning bullying in schools. Twelve of these statements specifically explored adopting a social pedagogic perspective. There was a general consensus among the respondents in all three countries that bullying is a major problem in schools and that schools are not tackling bullying adequately. The replies also indicate that many respondents reported views that align with a social pedagogic perspective. Differences between students within each country and between countries are in part a reflection of polarised views about how best to tackle bullying. © 2016 British Educational Research Associatio

    Bennett movement of mandible: a comparison between traditional methods and a 64-slices CT scanner

    OBJECTIVE:compare the values of the Bennett angle measured by an average value articulator with the ones measured by a 64 slices Computed Tomography (CT). METHODS: we have studied a patient aged 72. Maxillary and mandibular impressions were obtained from the patient and placed on the average value articulator using wax-ups and a facial arch in order to perform the Bennett angle measurations by such device. CT measurements were carried out using templates in order to block the Patient in the correct mandibular position. RESULTS:our study has demonstrated that the measurements of the Bennett angle obtained with the average value articulator are consistent with the ones obtained with the 64 slices CT. CONCLUSIONS: CT scanning is a useful method, alternative to conventional procedures, as the average value articulator for Bennett angle measurements, and it could become an important diagnostic tool in the gnathological and rehabilitative area

    Prostatic artery embolization performed in anteroposterior projections versus steep oblique projections: single centre retrospective comparative analysis

    Background: To present and evaluate an approach for reduction of utilization of steep oblique angiographic projections during prostatic artery embolization (PAE). Methods: Single-center, retrospective study of patients who underwent bilateral PAE (from October 2018 to November 2019) and in whom it was possible to embolize PA of at least one pelvic side utilizing anteroposterior projections only (AP-PAE group), with the following techniques: Identification of the origin of PA on anteroposterior angiographic views. Utilization of anatomic landmarks from the planning computed tomographic angiography. Distal advancement of the angiographic catheter or microcatheter in the anterior division of internal iliac artery. Gentle probing with microguidewire at the expected site of origin of the PA. The AP-PAE approach was initially applied to all PAE patients during the study period and when this approach failed, additional steep oblique projections were acquired; patients who underwent bilateral PAE, with both anteroposterior and oblique projections for both pelvic sides, formed the standard PAE (S-PAE) group. The AP-PAE group was compared with S-PAE group in terms of baseline clinical and anatomic features, technical/procedural aspects and outcomes. Results: Forty-six patients (92 pelvic sides) were studied. AP-PAE was feasible in 12/46 patients (26.0%): unilateral AP-PAE in 9/46 patients (19.5%); bilateral AP-PAE in 3/46 patients (6.5%). AP-PAE group had larger prostates (p = 0.047) and larger PAs (p < 0.001). Body mass index (BMI) and other baseline features were comparable between the two groups (mean BMI, AP-PAE group: 27.9 ± 3.6, S-PAE group: 27.0 ± 3.5, p = 0.451). Mean fluoroscopy time and dose area product were lower in AP-PAE group (46.3 vs 57.9 min, p = 0.084 and 22,924.9 vs 35,800.4 μGy.m2, p = 0.018, respectively). Three months post PAE, comparable clinical success rates (11/12 vs 31/34, p = 0.959) and mean International Prostate Symptom Score reduction (60.2% vs 58.1%, p = 0.740) were observed for AP-PAE and for S-PAE group, respectively. No major complications were encountered. Conclusion: AP-PAE is associated with significant reduction in radiation exposure and appears to be feasible, safe and effective, but it can be applied in a relatively small percentage of patients. © 2021, The Author(s)

    NEURONAL ENRICHED ENDOSOMAL PROTEIN OF 21 kDa COLOCALIZES WITH GLUTAMATE RECEPTOR SUBUNIT GLUR2/3 AT THE POSTSYNAPTIC MEMBRANE

    Functional evidence suggests that neuronal enriched endosomal protein of 21 kDa (NEEP21) takes part in facilitating transport of AMPA receptors (AMPAR) in the synapse. To explore the anatomical basis for a role in this synaptic trafficking, we investigated the ultrastructural localization of NEEP21 in rodent brain. Using immunogold electron microscopy, we show that NEEP21 is colocalized with the AMPAR subunits GIuR2/3 in postsynaptic spines. Quantitative analysis of gold particle distribution along an axis perpendicular to the postsynaptic specialization indicated that NEEP21 occurs in the postsynaptic membrane but also in the interior of the spines. NEEP21 positive endosomes/multivesicular bodies were found throughout cell bodies and dendrites. In light microscopical preparations, the NEEP21 antibody produced a labeling pattern in the neocortex, hippocampus and cerebellum that mimicked that of GluR2/3 and not that of GluR1 or 4. Our findings are consistent with a role for NEEP21 in facilitating vesicular transport of GluR2 between intracellular compartments and the postsynaptic plasma membrane.
