Time-Dependent Spintronic Transport and Current-Induced Spin Transfer Torque in Magnetic Tunnel Junctions

The responses of the electrical current and the current-induced spin transfer torque (CISTT) to an ac bias in addition to a dc bias in a magnetic tunnel junction are investigated by means of the time-dependent nonquilibrium Green function technique. The time-averaged current (time-averaged CISTT) is formulated in the form of a summation of dc current (dc CISTT) multiplied by products of Bessel functions with the energy levels shifted by mω0m\hbar \omega _{0}. The tunneling current can be viewed as to happen between the photonic sidebands of the two ferromagnets. The electrons can pass through the barrier easily under high frequencies but difficultly under low frequencies. The tunnel magnetoresistance almost does not vary with an ac field. It is found that the spin transfer torque, still being proportional to the electrical current under an ac bias, can be changed by varying frequency. Low frequencies could yield a rapid decrease of the spin transfer torque, while a large ac signal leads to both decrease of the electrical current and the spin torque. If only an ac bias is present, the spin transfer torque is sharply enhanced at the particular amplitude and frequency of the ac bias. A nearly linear relation between such an amplitude and frequency is observed.Comment: 13 pages,8 figure

Shear Viscosity to Entropy Density Ratio in Six Derivative Gravity

We calculate shear viscosity to entropy density ratio in presence of four derivative (with coefficient α\alpha') and six derivative (with coefficient α2\alpha'^2) terms in bulk action. In general, there can be three possible four derivative terms and ten possible six derivative terms in the Lagrangian. Among them two four derivative and eight six derivative terms are ambiguous, i.e., these terms can be removed from the action by suitable field redefinitions. Rest are unambiguous. According to the AdS/CFT correspondence all the unambiguous coefficients (coefficients of unambiguous terms) can be fixed in terms of field theory parameters. Therefore, any measurable quantities of boundary theory, for example shear viscosity to entropy density ratio, when calculated holographically can be expressed in terms of unambiguous coefficients in the bulk theory (or equivalently in terms of boundary parameters). We calculate η/s\eta/s for generic six derivative gravity and find that apparently it depends on few ambiguous coefficients at order α2\alpha'^2. We calculate six derivative corrections to central charges aa and cc and express η/s\eta/s in terms of these central charges and unambiguous coefficients in the bulk theory.Comment: 29 pages, no figure, V2, results and typos correcte

Oestrogen metabolites in relation to isoprostanes as a measure of oxidative stress

Objective  Oestradiol (E2) and its metabolites 2-hydroxyoestrone (2-OHE1) and 16Α-hydroxyoestrone (16Α-OHE1) are thought to curtail the greater oxidative stress found in the development and progression of disease conditions including atherosclerosis. We related oestrogen levels to F 2a -isoprostane levels, a biomarker of oxidative stress. Design and participants  Data were obtained from 1647 women, aged 47–57 years, participating in the fifth annual follow-up of the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN), a study of the menopausal transition. Measurements  Serum E2 and urinary 2-OHE1 and 16Α-OHE1 concentrations were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and urinary F 2a -isoprostanes were measured by enzyme immunoassay (EIA). Results  F 2a -isoprostane concentrations were elevated in women who smoked, a behaviour associated with increased oxidative stress, but not in stages of the natural menopause. Mean F 2a -isoprostane concentrations among pre- and postmenopausal women who smoked were 1082 and 1064 pg/ml, respectively, values double those in pre- (343 pg/ml) and postmenopausal (379 pg/ml) nonsmoking women. 2-OHE1 and F 2a -isoprostane concentrations were positively and highly correlated (partial correlations Ρ Y|X  = 0·44 and Ρ Y|X  = 0·43 in pre- and postmenopausal women, respectively). Similarly, 16Α-OHE1 concentrations were positively and highly correlated with F 2a -isoprostane concentrations (Ρ Y|X  = 0·52 and Ρ Y|X  = 0·59 in pre- and postmenopausal women, respectively). E2 was significantly correlated with F 2a -isoprostanes only in postmenopausal women (Ρ Y|X  = 0·20). Associations were adjusted for age, body mass index (BMI), race/ethnicity, lipids, physical activity level and alcohol consumption. Conclusions  This study does not support the commonly held hypothesis that levels of endogenous E2 or its oestrone metabolites favourably modify oxidative stress by decreasing F2 a -isoprostane levels.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/74943/1/j.1365-2265.2007.03108.x.pd

Microstructure and thermal stability of Fe, Ti and Ag implanted Yttria-stabilized zirconia

Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) was implanted with 15 keV Fe or Ti ions up to a dose of 8×1016 at cm−2. The resulting “dopant” concentrations exceeded the concentrations corresponding to the equilibrium solid solubility of Fe2O3 or TiO2 in YSZ. During oxidation in air at 400° C, the Fe and Ti concentration in the outermost surface layer increased even further until a surface layer was formed of mainly Fe2O3 and TiO2, as shown by XPS and ISS measurements. From the time dependence of the Fe and Ti depth profiles during anneal treatments, diffusion coefficients were calculated. From those values it was estimated that the maximum temperature at which the Fe- and Ti-implanted layers can be operated without changes in the dopant concentration profiles was 700 and 800° C, respectively. The high-dose implanted layer was completely amorphous even after annealing up to 1100° C, as shown by scanning transmission electron microscopy. Preliminary measurements on 50 keV Ag implanted YSZ indicate that in this case the amorphous layer recrystallizes into fine grained cubic YSZ at a temperature of about 1000° C. The average grain diameter was estimated at 20 nm, whereas the original grain size of YSZ before implantation was 400 nm. This result implies that the grain size in the surface of a ceramic material can be decreased by ion beam amorphisation and subsequent recrystallisation at elevated temperatures

A theoretical framework and research agenda for studying team attributions in sport

    Get PDF
The attributions made for group outcomes have attracted a great deal of interest in recent years. In this article we bring together much of the current research on attribution theory in sport and outline a new conceptual framework and research agenda for investigating the attributions of team members. The proposed framework draws on multiple conceptual approaches including models of attribution, group dynamics and stress responses to provide a detailed hypothetical description of athletes' physiological, cognitive and affective responses to group competition. In describing this model we outline important antecedents of team attributions before hypothesising how attributions can impact hormonal and cardiovascular responses of athletes, together with cognitive (goals, choices, expectations), affective (self-esteem, emotions), and behavioural (approach-avoidance actions) responses of groups and group members. We conclude by outlining important methodological considerations and implications for structured context specific attribution-based interventions

Black women are more likely than white women to schedule a uterine-sparing treatment for leiomyomas

Background: To evaluate differences in the proportion of uterine fibroid (UF) treatments that are uterine-sparing between Black women and White women and identify factors that could explain disparities. Methods: Women at age 18-54 years who were enrolled from 10 clinical sites in the United States into the Comparing Options for Management: Patient-Centered Results for UFs (COMPARE-UF) treatment registry completed questionnaires before their UF procedure. UF symptoms and quality of life were assessed by questionnaires. Details on UF imaging and treatment (hysterectomy, myomectomy, or uterine artery embolization [UAE]) were collected from each patient's medical record. Random-effects logistic regression was used to assess the association between race and the odds of having a uterine-sparing procedure versus hysterectomy. Subgroup analyses compared each uterine-sparing procedure with hysterectomy. Results: In this cohort of 1141 White women and 1196 Black women, Black women tended to be younger (median 41.0 vs. 42.0 years) and report worse symptoms, pain, and function on every scale compared with White women. Black women were more likely to have had a prior UF treatment compared with White women (22.8% vs. 14.6%). White women had more hysterectomies (43.6% vs. 32.2%) and myomectomies (50.9% vs. 50.2%) versus Black women. Black women had more UAEs (15.1% vs. 4.7%) than White women. After adjusting for clinical site and other variables, Black women had greater odds than White women of having a myomectomy (odds ratio [OR] = 2.41, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.63-3.56) or a UAE versus hysterectomy (OR = 4.24, 95% CI = 2.41-7.46). Conclusion: In these participants, Black women were more likely to schedule a uterine-sparing UF treatment and a nonsurgical UF treatment than their White counterparts; this may not be true for all women. Longer comparative effectiveness studies are needed to inform women about the durability of UF treatments. Greater understanding of factors influencing treatment selection is needed as are studies that include women without access to tertiary care centers.
