Chemical telemetry of OH observed to measure interstellar magnetic fields
We present models for the chemistry in gas moving towards the ionization
front of an HII region. When it is far from the ionization front, the gas is
highly depleted of elements more massive than helium. However, as it approaches
the ionization front, ices are destroyed and species formed on the grain
surfaces are injected into the gas phase. Photodissociation removes gas phase
molecular species as the gas flows towards the ionization front. We identify
models for which the OH column densities are comparable to those measured in
observations undertaken to study the magnetic fields in star forming regions
and give results for the column densities of other species that should be
abundant if the observed OH arises through a combination of the liberation of
H2O from surfaces and photodissociation. They include CH3OH, H2CO, and H2S.
Observations of these other species may help establish the nature of the OH
spatial distribution in the clouds, which is important for the interpretation

Spin Torques in Ferromagnetic/Normal Metal Structures
Recent theories of spin-current-induced magnetization reversal are formulated
in terms of a spin-mixing conductance . We evaluate from
first-principles for a number of (dis)ordered interfaces between magnetic and
non-magnetic materials. In multi-terminal devices, the magnetization direction
of a one side of a tunnel junction or a ferromagnetic insulator can ideally be

Examination of community and consumer nutrition, tobacco and physical activity environments at food and tobacco retail stores in three diverse North Carolina communities
To advance our understanding of multiple health-related dimensions of the built environment, this study examined associations among nutrition, tobacco, and physical activity community and consumer environments. Community environment measures included supermarket access, tobacco outlet density, and physical activity resource density in store neighborhoods. Cross-sectional observations of the nutrition, tobacco and physical activity environments were conducted in 2011 at and around 303 food stores that sold tobacco products in three North Carolina counties. Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple linear regression were used to examine associations between community and consumer environments. Correlations between community nutrition, tobacco, and physical activity environments ranged from slight to fair (-. 0.35 to 0.20) and from poor to fair (-. 0.01 to -. 0.38) between consumer environments. Significant relationships between consumer tobacco and nutrition environments were found after controlling for store and neighborhood characteristics. For example, stores with higher amounts of interior tobacco marketing had higher healthy food availability (p. =. 0.001), while stores with higher amounts of exterior tobacco marketing had lower healthy food availability (p. =. 0.02). Community and consumer environments for nutrition, tobacco, and physical activity were interrelated. Measures that assess single aspects of community or consumer environments could miss characteristics that may influence customer purchasing. Even chain supermarkets, typically regarded as healthful food sources compared to smaller food stores, may expose customers to tobacco marketing inside. Future research could explore combining efforts to reduce obesity and tobacco use by addressing tobacco marketing, healthy food availability and physical activity opportunities at retail food outlets
Constraining Primordial Non-Gaussianity with High-Redshift Probes
We present an analysis of the constraints on the amplitude of primordial
non-Gaussianity of local type described by the dimensionless parameter . These constraints are set by the auto-correlation functions (ACFs) of two
large scale structure probes, the radio sources from NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS)
and the quasar catalogue of Sloan Digital Sky Survey Release Six (SDSS DR6
QSOs), as well as by their cross-correlation functions (CCFs) with the cosmic
microwave background (CMB) temperature map (Integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect).
Several systematic effects that may affect the observational estimates of the
ACFs and of the CCFs are investigated and conservatively accounted for. Our
approach exploits the large-scale scale-dependence of the non-Gaussian halo
bias. The derived constraints on {} coming from the NVSS CCF and
from the QSO ACF and CCF are weaker than those previously obtained from the
NVSS ACF, but still consistent with them. Finally, we obtain the constraints on
() and () from

The High Redshift Integrated Sachs-Wolfe Effect
In this paper we rely on the quasar (QSO) catalog of the Sloan Digital Sky
Survey Data Release Six (SDSS DR6) of about one million photometrically
selected QSOs to compute the Integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect at high
redshift, aiming at constraining the behavior of the expansion rate and thus
the behaviour of dark energy at those epochs. This unique sample significantly
extends previous catalogs to higher redshifts while retaining high efficiency
in the selection algorithm. We compute the auto-correlation function (ACF) of
QSO number density from which we extract the bias and the stellar
contamination. We then calculate the cross-correlation function (CCF) between
QSO number density and Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature
fluctuations in different subsamples: at high z>1.5 and low z<1.5 redshifts and
for two different choices of QSO in a conservative and in a more speculative
analysis. We find an overall evidence for a cross-correlation different from
zero at the 2.7\sigma level, while this evidence drops to 1.5\sigma at z>1.5.
We focus on the capabilities of the ISW to constrain the behaviour of the dark
energy component at high redshift both in the \LambdaCDM and Early Dark Energy
cosmologies, when the dark energy is substantially unconstrained by
observations. At present, the inclusion of the ISW data results in a poor
improvement compared to the obtained constraints from other cosmological
datasets. We study the capabilities of future high-redshift QSO survey and find
that the ISW signal can improve the constraints on the most important
cosmological parameters derived from Planck CMB data, including the high
redshift dark energy abundance, by a factor \sim 1.5.Comment: 20 pages, 18 figures, and 7 table
Randall-Sundrum black holes and strange stars
It has recently been suggested that the existence of bare strange stars is
incompatible with low scale gravity scenarios. It has been claimed that in such
models, high energy neutrinos incident on the surface of a bare strange star
would lead to catastrophic black hole growth. We point out that for the flat
large extra dimensional case, the parts of parameter space which give rise to
such growth are ruled out by other methods. We then go on to show in detail how
black holes evolve in the the Randall-Sundrum two brane scenario where the
extra dimensions are curved. We find that catastrophic black hole growth does
not occur in this situation either. We also present some general expressions
for the growth of five dimensional black holes in dense media.Comment: 16 pages, more numerics has lead to different path to same

Black Hole Chromosphere at the LHC
If the scale of quantum gravity is near a TeV, black holes will be copiously
produced at the LHC. In this work we study the main properties of the light
descendants of these black holes. We show that the emitted partons are closely
spaced outside the horizon, and hence they do not fragment into hadrons in
vacuum but more likely into a kind of quark-gluon plasma. Consequently, the
thermal emission occurs far from the horizon, at a temperature characteristic
of the QCD scale. We analyze the energy spectrum of the particles emerging from
the "chromosphere", and find that the hard hadronic jets are almost entirely
suppressed. They are replaced by an isotropic distribution of soft photons and
hadrons, with hundreds of particles in the GeV range. This provides a new

Development of an algorithm to assess unmeasured symptom severity in gynecologic care
Background: Healthcare disparities research is often limited by incomplete accounting for differences in health status by populations. In the United States, hysterectomy shows marked variation by race and geography, but it is difficult to understand what factors cause these variations without accounting for differences in the severity of gynecologic symptoms that drive the decision-making for hysterectomy. Objective: This study aimed to demonstrate a method for using electronic health record–derived data to create composite symptom severity indices to more fully capture relevant markers that influence the decision for hysterectomy. Study Design: This was a retrospective cohort study of 1993 women who underwent hysterectomy between April 4, 2014, and December 31, 2017, from 10 hospitals and >100 outpatient clinics in North Carolina. Electronic health record data, including billing, pharmacy, laboratory data, and free-text notes, were used to identify markers of 3 common indications for hysterectomy: bulk symptoms (pressure from uterine enlargement), vaginal bleeding, and pelvic pain. To develop weighted symptom indices, we finalized a scoring algorithm based on the relationship of each marker to an objective measure, in combination with clinical expertise, with the goal of composite symptom severity indices that had sufficient variation to be useful in comparing different patient groups and allow discrimination among severe symptoms of bulk, bleeding, or pain. Results: The ranges of symptom severity scores varied across the 3 indices, including composite bulk score (0–14), vaginal bleeding score (0–44), and pain score (0–30). The mean values of each composite symptom severity index were greater for those who had diagnostic codes for vaginal bleeding, bulk symptoms, or pelvic pain, respectively. However, each index demonstrated a variation across the entire group of hysterectomy cases and identified symptoms that ranged in severity among those with and without the target diagnostic codes. Conclusion: Leveraging multisource data to create composite symptom severity indices provided greater discriminatory power to assess common gynecologic indications for hysterectomy. These methods can improve the understanding in healthcare use in the setting of long-standing inequities and be applied across populations to account for previously unexplained variations across race, geography, and other social indicators
MANAGING THE IMPACT OF DIFFERENCES IN NATIONAL CULTURE ON SOCIAL CAPITAL IN MULTINATIONAL IT PROJECT TEAMS – A GERMAN PERSPECTIVE
How can management handle relationship problems arising from cultural differences in multinational IT project teams? This paper uses a social capital lens to better understand the negative impact of cultural differences in IT project teams. In contrast to many previous works we do not consider cultural differences as a whole but explore the role of the different national culture dimensions. This allows for a more detailed view on cultural differences in a team context and thus contributes to a better understanding about which dimensions of national culture drive relationship problems and which management measures can help to dampen the negative effects. Based on several exploratory cases (6 multinational IT projects in 4 companies, headquartered in Germany), the authors identify three patterns showing typical problems in team social relationships which arise from differences in particular dimensions of national culture.
